Varsity Girls This season was highly unusual in that it was full of adversity in terms of disabling injuries. Nonetheless, our team survived and completed the sea son with a 16-11 win-loss record. Team accomplishments include: Third place in the Holiday Tournament, sec- ond place in the district, second place in the conference, and following full recovery from our injuries the team won 10 out of the last 13 games including one stretch of 7 victories in a row. Two of the starters, Jane Arnall and Julie Tobey were seniors. Tobey received special recognition by being selected to the Sarasota Herald-Trib- une All Christmas Tournament first team, and was also honored as a Sara- sota County player of the week. A Winning Season for J.V. This is the first year that Venice has had a true J.V. team with its own schedule and coach. While the team lacked a number of basic skills, prog- ress was made both as a team and by individuals. Team confidence was built through three early victories, and team character was developed by turning the tables on St. Pete. Catholic in a hard fought game at home. Fur- ther proof that they had what it takes came in the effort against Manatee. Down 16 points at the half, the team brought it back to 5 just before the games end. The team leader was Lynn Gibson. And Peggy Jansen was the rebound leader and finished just 4 points ahead of Gibson for high scoring hon- ors. Cindy Binder joined the J.V. team at midseason and added that extra punch needed to gain their winning record of 10-6. Barbi Meadows, the smallest member of the team, exhib- ited a lot of scrap, especially on the defense. In the St. Pete, victory with three starters on the bench Barbi became a one girl team, directing the offense and preserving the win with numerous steals and interceptions. At that game Lynda Tenbush rounded out the starting five. The unsung heroes were the reserves, they put in the same amount of practice time but in close games had to sit the bench. That is the hard- est job of all. J.V. BASKETBALL Row 1: Kathy Clark, Leslie Allan, Barb Meadows, Lynn Gibson, Diane Katsarellas. Row 2: Coach Buck, Sherri Powell, Erin O ' Connell, Lynda Tenbush, Peggy Jansen, Barb Miller, Sandy Sowin, Lisa Kill. Coach Buck gives team advice.
