Best Ever started out as the theme of the 1979 Indians and became a description of the team and season. The Indians rolled over 10 straight opponents, to finish as the first undefeated team in Venice High School history. A fitting climax to the season came in the first play off game as we knocked off the number one state ranked team, Naples, 21-14 in front of the largest crowd in Venice High School history. Titusville Astro- nauts ended our season with a last minute pass to give the proud Indians an 11-1 record. Line play was the name of the game as our powerful offensive and defen- sive lines dominated every game. Larry Sandburg ' s offensive line of Dave Butler, Joe Walsh, Keith Smith, Alan Wozniak, Cort Taliaferro, and Phillip Lewis opened holes all season for running backs Tom Marazon, Steve Beebe, Pete Panton, and Horace Charles. Charles was the leading rusher in the play off games. The Indians passing attack was a record breaker for Venice High School and the area, as Ronnie DeMasi threw to Randy Clark, Jeff Telford, Scott Pinkerton, Tom Marazon, Steve Beebe, and Horace Charles. The defensive line was led by big Dave Serafino, Chris Porter, Alan Woz- niak, and Keith Smith, while the line- backing corps included Joe Walsh, Pete Panton, Doug Yates, Phillip Lewis. Our secondary was the best ever as Martin Levering intercepted nine enemy passes. Jeff Telford, Randy Clark and Alan Hixon were the other pass defenders. Chris Meyer shattered all kicking records with 50 of 54 extra points and two field goals and Keith Carney was a clutch punter all year long. Coaches: Charlie Hodges, Larry Sandburg, Head Coach Jim Powell, Mike Lay.
