The events that took place in 1980 gave the year a special meaning for each individual. The news took our breath away. The rapidly changing events led us to fear the future. Gas prices soared to an unbelieva- ble price of $1.12 per gallon in the early part of the school year. Many students unable to afford such a high price formed car pools or went back to riding the bus. It was reported in August that the U.S.S.R. had a combat force number- ing 1,000 men in Cuba. The state department said the unit poses no threat to the U.S. but it aroused con- cern. In October, Pope John Paul visited the United States for a seven day tour. The Pope ' s visit included an address on human rights to the United Nations General Assembly. In October, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles fought for the world series title. Baltimore led three games to one, but Pittsburgh swept the last three games and won four to three. In November about 500 Iranian stu- dents seized the U.S. embassy in Teh- ran taking 59 Americans hostage. They vowed not to release their cap- tives until ousted Shah Mohammed Risa Pahlevi, under medical treatment in New York was returned to stand trial in Iran. In January, the minimum wage went up to $3.10 an hour; a price most students did not argue with. In the later part of January, Soviet aggression in Afghanistan was the main concern of many United States citizens and the possibility of boycot- ting the Olympic Games was consid- ered at that time. Many fans of the Pittsburgh Steel- ers and Los Angeles Rams sat intensely in front of their TV. sets on January 20 to watch Super Bowl 1 4. The Steelers showed their superiority with a 31-19 win. The Top Ten Most Popular songs on February 10, 1980 were: 1. Do That To Me One More Time, The Captain and Tennille. 2. Rock With You, Michael Jackson. 3. Coward of the County, Kenny Rogers. 4. Cruisin ' , Smokey Robinson. 5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Queen. 6. Escape, Rupert Holmes. 7. Don ' t Do Me Like That, Petty and Heartbreakers. 8. Sara, Fleetwood Mac. 9.
