1 Vlij r tj v o WARRIOR VENICE HIGH SCHOOL VENICE, FLORIDA VOLUME 25 1980 Here we go again! Get up, go to school, write a paper, go to lunch, get back late, go to practice, go home, go to sleep. It ' s the same old thing day after day, year after year. No one ever told me it would be like this. High school years are supposed to be the best years of my life. Maybe if I open my eyes I may just learn something new today. MOVIN ' WONDER Did you ever wonder what was going on outside of your own life? Did you ever wonder what other students or teachers were doing, or have you taken the time to see the world as it really is? Stop, look, and listen — slow down the pace for just a little while to appreciate all the wonderful and beau- tiful things around you. Take a good hard look at the beauty in a flower or feel the warmth of being with a friend. Think for just a minute of the amount of time authors put into their work so that we might be able to obtain the knowledge they are trying to pass along, or feel the togetherness of those involved in a club or service organization. We can all be a part of these wonderful things. Don ' t let these moments slip away. Take a look at the wonder of our world; take a closer look at 1980. When we are out in the world there seems no time to wonder, no time to breathe. So much is happening that the time goes flying by. At the end of the first semester, many seniors began to realize that time was running short, there weren ' t that many more days left before the inevitable June 5th would arrive. Sophomores and juniors faced with this thought cringed to think that they still had one or two more years to go at V.H.S. But, even though there were a lot of things about our school that were not perfect, think of all the good times that we had this year. Remem- ber the terrific season that our football team had, the many pep assemblies that ended with singing the alma mater, the time you finally understood that difficult math problem, or the time that you came to realize the real reason you were at school. These events have helped us grow, to make us more aware of how fortunate we were to be a part of something so great. We want to keep these memo- ries with us as we venture back to the happenings that made 1 980 great. 0 REMEMBER PARTYIN ' Did you ever feel joy or happiness grow like a bubble, bigger and bigger inside of you making you want to tell everyone and celebrate your feelings 7 There have been many things to cele- brate this year, and the celebrations took a variety of forms. For some it was a quiet night with a few friends, for others cake and ice cream, but for most it was partyin ' , the year round event that kept us all from going crazy. During the week, on the weekends, between classes or wherever you might have been, out at caspos, the jettys, bars and concerts, it was the thing to do to have a good time — it was partyin ' . Crusin ' down the avenue, yelling out of car windows, meeting people in parking lots and getting questioned by certain police officers was all part of partyin ' in the town of Venice. Do you remember what it was like to party? The events that took place in 1980 gave the year a special meaning for each individual. The news took our breath away. The rapidly changing events led us to fear the future. Gas prices soared to an unbelieva- ble price of $1.12 per gallon in the early part of the school year. Many students unable to afford such a high price formed car pools or went back to riding the bus. It was reported in August that the U.S.S.R. had a combat force number- ing 1,000 men in Cuba. The state department said the unit poses no threat to the U.S. but it aroused con- cern. In October, Pope John Paul visited the United States for a seven day tour. The Pope ' s visit included an address on human rights to the United Nations General Assembly. In October, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Baltimore Orioles fought for the world series title. Baltimore led three games to one, but Pittsburgh swept the last three games and won four to three. In November about 500 Iranian stu- dents seized the U.S. embassy in Teh- ran taking 59 Americans hostage. They vowed not to release their cap- tives until ousted Shah Mohammed Risa Pahlevi, under medical treatment in New York was returned to stand trial in Iran. In January, the minimum wage went up to $3.10 an hour; a price most students did not argue with. In the later part of January, Soviet aggression in Afghanistan was the main concern of many United States citizens and the possibility of boycot- ting the Olympic Games was consid- ered at that time. Many fans of the Pittsburgh Steel- ers and Los Angeles Rams sat intensely in front of their TV. sets on January 20 to watch Super Bowl 1 4. The Steelers showed their superiority with a 31-19 win. The Top Ten Most Popular songs on February 10, 1980 were: 1. Do That To Me One More Time, The Captain and Tennille. 2. Rock With You, Michael Jackson. 3. Coward of the County, Kenny Rogers. 4. Cruisin ' , Smokey Robinson. 5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Queen. 6. Escape, Rupert Holmes. 7. Don ' t Do Me Like That, Petty and Heartbreakers. 8. Sara, Fleetwood Mac. 9. This Is It, Kenny Loggins. 10. The Long Run, Eagles. Gulf ACTIVITIES Activities take place all year round, seven days a week at V.H.S. Happi- ness, sadness, pain and love are the emotions that come from involvmenet in activities. Those who are not involved can only look from the side- lines as we grow and learn. Those involved strive for achievement or the expression of some new interest and add dimension to the V.H.S. atmos- phere. On September 17, V.H.S. had an open house for the parents of stu- dents to visit teachers and converse about classroom activities. On February 28-March 1, the Inter- act club presented their follies Time Passages . Songs, dances, and skits were performed providing entertain- ment for all. Serteen had an original idea of sell- ing mums for homecoming this year. Their idea went over well and will hopefully become an annual tradition atV.H.S. ..... The days seemed to have merged in our minds, and it becomes increas ingly hard to separate one day from the next. There are many memories from 1980 that will always be out- standing to us. These memories will only have meaning to the individuals who experienced them and the special people they were with. Think back and recall the memories that were special to you during 1980. Henry Walkup: 12 Being chosen as representative of Venice High School for leadership workshop and Presidential Classroom. Kathy Johns: 12 Mr. Dunn ' s psychology class. Ann Barton: 1 1 My |unior year. Missy Whitton: 1 1 Getting out of Mr. Mulligan ' s class. Joe Frocknite: 10 Signing out books. MEMORIES SENIORS The final days of our high school years have arrived. We will hold the memories of being seniors forever. The time has come for us to go our own separate ways. Take one last look at the familiar faces that roamed the halls of V.H.S. in 1980. D. The Indians rolled over 10 straight opponents, to finish as the first undefeated team in Venice High School history. A fitting climax to the season came in the first play off game as we knocked off the number one state ranked team, Naples, 21-14 in front of the largest crowd in Venice High School history. Titusville Astro- nauts ended our season with a last minute pass to give the proud Indians an 11-1 record. Line play was the name of the game as our powerful offensive and defen- sive lines dominated every game. Larry Sandburg ' s offensive line of Dave Butler, Joe Walsh, Keith Smith, Alan Wozniak, Cort Taliaferro, and Phillip Lewis opened holes all season for running backs Tom Marazon, Steve Beebe, Pete Panton, and Horace Charles. Charles was the leading rusher in the play off games. The Indians passing attack was a record breaker for Venice High School and the area, as Ronnie DeMasi threw to Randy Clark, Jeff Telford, Scott Pinkerton, Tom Marazon, Steve Beebe, and Horace Charles. The defensive line was led by big Dave Serafino, Chris Porter, Alan Woz- niak, and Keith Smith, while the line- backing corps included Joe Walsh, Pete Panton, Doug Yates, Phillip Lewis. Our secondary was the best ever as Martin Levering intercepted nine enemy passes. Jeff Telford, Randy Clark and Alan Hixon were the other pass defenders. Chris Meyer shattered all kicking records with 50 of 54 extra points and two field goals and Keith Carney was a clutch punter all year long. There were six new members who progressed meas- urably during the season. Of these, senior Ed Dinka and sophomore Kirby Outerbridge proved to be assets for Venice. Ed led the Venice runners in many meets and Kirby was always close behind. The girls ' team was short two run- ners, juniors Patty Reed and Claudia Gallegos | oined the team to fulfill the need for five members. Coach Charlie Powell and manager Judy Parsons along with every cross country runner put in many hours of hard work practicing and preparing for meets. These long hours paid off when the Venice boys won the county meet. At the end of the season the win-loss record was 83-29. All these runners should be admired for their hard work and determination. Basketball team had nei- ther the size nor the experience of pre- vious teams but this did not seem to hinder their playing. The greatest sat- isfaction of the season probably came from the win over Charlotte High. The team had not beat Charlotte in more than four years of competition. With the game in over-time they won with a score of 72 to 70. Starting almost completely from scratch with a new team and new coaches (Jerry Mulligan and Mike Lay), the J.V. basketball team ended the season with a 10-6 record. This was largely due to outstanding players such as Leading Scorer Kevin Faulk- ner, Leading Rebounder Ric Roehsner and Eric Anderson the Best Play Maker. This is the first year that Venice has had a true J.V. team with its own schedule and coach. While the team lacked a number of basic skills, prog- ress was made both as a team and by individuals. Team confidence was built through three early victories, and team character was developed by turning the tables on St. Pete. Catholic in a hard fought game at home. Fur- ther proof that they had what it takes came in the effort against Manatee. Down 16 points at the half, the team brought it back to 5 just before the games end. The team leader was Lynn Gibson. And Peggy Jansen was the rebound leader and finished just 4 points ahead of Gibson for high scoring hon- ors. Cindy Binder joined the J.V. team at midseason and added that extra punch needed to gain their winning record of 10-6. Barbi Meadows, the smallest member of the team, exhib- ited a lot of scrap, especially on the defense. In the St. Pete, victory with three starters on the bench Barbi became a one girl team, directing the offense and preserving the win with numerous steals and interceptions. At that game Lynda Tenbush rounded out the starting five. The unsung heroes were the reserves, they put in the same amount of practice time but in close games had to sit the bench. That is the hard- est job of all. J.V. BASKETBALL Row 1: Kathy Clark, Leslie Allan, Barb Meadows, Lynn Gibson, Diane Katsarellas. They finished as runner-up in both the District and Conference championship meets. The one all area wrestler, Wesley Burrows, led the team to victory. He received the Most Valuable Wrestler Award, the Golden Pin, and the Take-Down-a-Thon. Butch Greathouse was the Rope Clim bmg Champion and received the Let- terman ' s Club Award. Tied for the Most Improved were Scott Pfender and Chris Porter. There was also a tie for the Wrestler of the Season between Dan Hart and Joe Sardmas. The Kauf- man Most Dedicated went to Frank Noyes. By the end of the season the team had three district and three confer ence champions, three all-county, and three honorable-mention players. The team members finished with a very respectable season. MATURES 96 Features Spirit Spirit week at Venice High means preparation to close our football sea son. The cheerleaders were in charge of the week ' s competitive activities between classes. Students found themselves wearing comical hats, ties, and glasses, imitating tourist ' s dress, looking out to the future in their ver- sion of space 1999 costumes and finally showing their spirit by dressing in green and white. Seniors were victo- rious for showing the most spirited costumes. Interact sponsored both the bonfire and the Friday pep assembly. During the bonfire, skits were put on by each class and various clubs. The highlight of that evening was the announce- ment of the Interact Sweetheart, Mar- tin Levering, Key Club President. The pep assembly showed us that teachers too can still be active in com- petitive sports. Students, teachers and clubs competed against each other on the football field. Although the teach- ers won the ball relay, they lost the tug of war to the students. In the tradi- tional events Jr. class president Todd Briggs won the Mr. Legs contest, Kelly Cecil the pie eating contest and Student Government the football relay. Float Competition between the Sophomore, Junior and Senior classes was one of the festivities before the game. The floats were paraded through the parking lot and onto the football field with the marching band, a few clubs and the R.O.T.C. leading the way. Sophomores surprised every- one as their float took first place in the competition. At halftime the Homecoming Court was presented. Miss Debbie Hutchin- son was crowned the queen for 1979. They are concerned with the well being of each individual student and encourage each to per- form to the best of their ability. Jr. Sponsor Breaks the Mold Many teachers remain uninvolved with the student body; often appear- ing unconcerned with campus prob- lems and events. Mrs. Krill breaks from that stereo- type and feels that it is important to have another level of understanding between her and her students, dealing with each other as human beings . She feels that it is her responsibility as a teacher to open the windows of the world. Because of her unceasing help as a teacher, organizer of Jr. class activi- ties, and exemplified concern and friendship, we proudly dedicate the 1980 edition of the Warrior to Mrs. Suzanne Krill. 122 Faculty Administration Moves Ahead George Pearson, Assistant Principal Ball State University, B.S. As we reflect all the moments that have touched our lives at V.H.S. we see that each indi- vidual has added something special to complete the picture of what we are. The days have merged in our minds, and it seems like only yesterday that we were experiencing our first days in high school. We can only smile at all we have accomplished and all the friends we have made. And, as we leave for the last time, we will cherish what seems like a lifetime of events, even though they may only be in our thoughts. Look back and remember what V.H.S. was for you. Take a look at the wonder of your world, take a closer look at 1980. A special thanks to Mrs. Sleasman who worked harder than any staff member to pull the ends together during the rough times. The Warrior staff tried something new this year. Our book is different than its forerunner in that it is a bigger size, includes an index, with the entire senior section in full color. The Warrior was printed by the offset lithography process by Taylor Publishing Company. Body copy is set in 10 pt. news gothic; head- lines in 30 pt. helvetica; captions in 8 pt. bold; and opening and division page headings in 72 pt. Portrait and some candid photography was done by Bryn Alan Studios, other candids were taken by the staff. 224 Credits -
