C C'fllOf'S Compliments of FRIEDMAN'S Madison Fifth and Madison Illinois Tri-Cities' Most Complete Home Furnishings 13 enior Gffass gastory The first Tuesday of September, 1952 , we meekly walked into Venice High School as Freshmen. The number in our class was twenty- nine. About October of that year, we gave the Sophomores a Freshman- Sophomore Party in return for the Sophomore -Freshman Party given us . Our officers were: President, Ronald Blatz: Vice-President, Lenora Ledbetter: Secretary, Rosemary Ponce: Treasurer, Bob Ponce, Sergeant at Arms , Tom Marcus . In September, 1953 , we grudgingly walked back into Venice High as Sophomores . Our number had decreased to twenty-four. Our officers were: President, Rogera Davis: Vice-President, Keith Kelly: Secretary, Rosalie Beyer: Treasurer, Carolyn Langston: Travel Fund Treasurer, Phyllis Vaught, Sergeant at Arms , Tom Marcus . We gave the Freshmen a Sophomore-Freshman Party. Later in the year, we staged a Sophomore Hop which was very successful. Also, during this year, we had a wild ambition to take a long trip when we graduated. To try to help gain this goal, we started collecting Travel Fund Dues from our class members . When September of 1954 arrived, we came back to school as Juniors . Our number now was nineteen. Our officers this year were: President, Rogera Davis: Vice-Pres- ident, Ada Carver: Secretary, Ronald Blatz: Treasurer, Carolyn Langston: 'Travel Fund Treasurer, Rosalie Beyer: Sergeant at Arms, Tom Marcus . In October, the Iuniors presented a play entitled, It's A Long Lane . Later on in the year, the Second Semester Iunior Speech Class gave a One-Act Play for an assembly program. The title was , Like Father, Like Son. On the first of September, 1956 , we came back to school looking forward to the end of our high school days. By this time, our number had sadly diminished to sixteen. Our officers were: President, Rosalie Beyer: Vice-President, Tom Marcus: Secretary-Treasurer, Ada Carver: Travel Fund Treasurer, Lenora Ledbetter: Sergeant at Arms , Earl Wamhoff. We held a Senior Coronation Ball in Ianuary. Miss Rosemary Ponce was crowned Yearbook Queen. During our Senior year, a group of our members worked on the Yearbook, participated in the Student Council, and started Iournalism and Dramatic Clubs . In April of 1956 , the Senior Class presented a play for the public. We hope, soon after this history is read, the remaininglsixteen of us will be marching up to get that long-awaited diploma. Compliments of GLIK'S DEPARTMENT STORES Madison and Bellemore Village enior roplzecy This is 1971 . My name is Ron Blatz, and I'm on my way to work. Sometimes I see some of my old buddies from the Class of '56 at' Venice High School. For instance , every morning I pass the Reverend Thomas Marcus and his head missionary, Leonard Ritz, on the corner of skid row , they're trying to win back lost souls . Usually I buy my paper from one of my old buddies, Keith Killer Kelly. Killer was a pretty good wrestler some time ago, but sud- denly stopped. No one knows why. After I buy my paper, I get on a bus and read the paper on my way to work. On the front page of today's paper is a picture of Earl Warnhoff being escorted very unceremoniously Hom court. He has become one of the most unsuccessful lawyers in the state. Here is his statement to the press: I'll buy my own courts and judges. These rules are old-fashioned. I'1l bet I can win a case if you get some good crooked judges on the bench. Here's a small article about Rogera Davis, too. It seems she was seen in St. Louis going into a restaurant to ask if she could sing for her supper . She had been singing with the St. Louis Met. , but lost her health and had to go to the hospital. Her doctor bills were extremely high, and now she is broke. In the section called It Happened Here is an article about Tom Foley. It seems he recently spent the biggest part of a night trying to teach his twelve year old son how many pennies he has left out of a nickel if he buys three pieces of bubble gum. On the Women's Page I see that Rosemary Ponce has won the Mrs . America Contest for this year. Well, I'm at work now. Did I tell you I was working for an invest- ment corporation? One of my main clients is Ada Carver. Vlfhen Ada was a senior, she worked in a plastic factory. After that, plastic just seemed to run in her blood. Today she came into the office with some stock to sell. It seems she has just purchased three plastic factorie s . Another of our clients is Lillian Padgett. If you remember, Lillian's high school ambition was to be an airline hostess. Something caused her not to fulfill her ambition, so she recently purchased an airline for herself. It's to be known as Padgett's Rocket Line . One of my favorite lunching spots is Schaefer's Drug Store . Schaefer ? Oh yes, it's Bill. When Bill was in high school, he worked nights in a drug store. He disliked his boss so much that he decided to buy a chain of drug stores so he could be a Scrooge , too. On my way to the bus stop this afternoon, I met the former Rosalie Beyer and Lenora Ledbetter. Rosalie always said she would never marry, but cupid hit her with an arrow, too . This year she was named the Most Efficient Housewife in the U.S. Lenora was in love with Rab when she was in high school, and, today, she was proudly flash- ing a diamond engagement ring she had just received. Iust as I got on my bus, I saw Don Hill. Dumpy is living up to his high school nickname . He was chosen by the Dump Trucks Drivers of America as the Most Muscular Dump Truck Driver in the U.S. You will never guess whom I saw while eating lunch--Don Wells and Bob Ponce. Remember, they were stars on the basketball squad in high schoolp and they decided to coach basketball. Well, in the past fifteen years, they got kind of fat and flabby, and now they are teaching physical education at the Downtown Y . Well, here's my stop, I'm getting off downtovsm today so I can buy another toupee. This makes my third one, so far. So long! See you tomorrow to tell you the news of the day. fast and cistarnent of tfze Glass o 1956 We , the Seniors of '56 of Venice, Illinois , as we depart from Venice High School, after twelve years of hard labor, still being of sane minds, wish to leave this last will and testament to the poor souls remaining behind. To the Freshman Class, we will our intelligence . To the Sophomore Class, we will our beauty. To the Iunior Class , we will our quiet, reserved, and dignified actions. I, Rosalie Beyer, will my ability to maintain a perfect attendance record to Cathy Koelker. I, Ron Blatz, will my captain stripes to Terry Greenlee. I, Ada Carver, will my naturally stringy hair and my ability to smile my way through school to Connie Parks. I, Rogera Davis , will my naturally dark hair to Iudy Garris in the hope that she will contemplate nature's gift. I, Thomas Foley, will my beautiful red complexion and betting ways to Lawrence Caruso . I, Donald Hill, will my loud mouth and rowdy manners to Marilyn Kowalski. I, Keith Kelly, will my ability to attract good-looking girls to Don Davinroy. I, Lenora Ledbetter, will my naturally black eyebrows and eyelashes to Miss Groshong in the event that she would like to use them. I, Thomas Marcus, will my golden tonsils to Don Cook in the hope that he will be able to talk his way through school as well as I did. I, Lillian Padgett, will my ability to drive without a license for two years to Margaret Fears . I, Robert Ponce, will my masculine physique to David Weber. I, Rosemary Ponce, will my Queenly abilities to Iudith Chalfin. I, Leonard Ritz, will the fender of my hopped-up Oldsmobile to Skip Schaffner. Compliments of HARVEY'S BARBER SHOP Phone TR 6-4357 1503 Third Madison, Illinois I, William Schaefer, will my car to anyone who has the vocabulary to make it run. I, Earl Warnoff, will my rniserly abilities to Glen Sadler. I, Don Wells, will my ability to love them and leave them to Noel Ogden. Besides these enforced gifts we leave--not of necessity, but of our won free will-our bodies to the future Williams' Funeral Home. Illinois VeI1iC9, Illinois We , the VENETIAN staff of '56 , are very proud of what we have pro- duced for you , the members of the student body. We hope you will enjoy the book as much as we have enjoyed preparing it. We would like to thank the VENETIAN'S Managers , Earl Warnhoff, Lillian Padgett, and Ron Blatz , for doing an efficient job of managing 7 the Copy Writers , Ada Carver, Maryella Price, and Rosalie Beyer, for typing and other general work, and our Photographers , Marie Musick and George Schaffner, for taking the snaps used on our snap pages. We also would like to thank our Artist, Tom Marcus, for his tedious work on drawings, and our ever-helping Assistant Editor, Margaret Fears , who did just about everything and who was a wonderful help . Mrs. Williams , our VENETIAN sponsor, deserves a great deal of thanks . She was our anchor in the storm, and really found those mistakes we made! We would like to thank the photographers from the Hollywood-Andrews Studio for coming down to take pictures at our convenience , and the Press- Record for some of the basketball action shots contained in the VENETIAN. The Seniors of the staff will really miss our Wednesday night meetings next year, but we know that the lowerclassmen are looking forward to next year and hoping there will be a place for them on the '57 staff. Last, but not least, we want to say a special thank you to all the grade school teachers who helped so much with the picture -money collec- tions .
