HISTORY OF THE WINTER 39 CLASS IN FEBRUARY l933 students from varuous alrflelds expectantly entered the hangars of thenr chosen home fleld the Venuce Hugh Aurport for a sux year fllght requnrlng several hours a day of flying After three years of prelnmlnary pulotung they celebrated the half way mark at theur 9 A graduatuon after which they became full fledged upper classmen lt didn t seem long tlll they received the trtle of I2 B s At last the long awaited day arrlved and they were recognlzed as avrators of the hugh est degree Sensor A s lt was at thus stage of the flight that the newly chosen leader Caspar Llotta took over the control stuck of the plane He was helped by Don Houck Bernyta Ferklns and Fred Nerney as co pllots The recenvmg of thelr rust and beige uniforms was joyfully celebrated at a luncheon and dance on October I7 l938 Ably assisted by a landing crew headed by Mass Crlffln newly appointed manager of the Venlce Hngh Alrport the eager pilots successfully neared the end of thelr suxth year of flying These last few months were marked by a number of momentous events whuch took place In the hangars of the home field One of the fnrst was the choosnng of Epheblans those students out standing In service and scholarshup who were to belong to a cnvlc organnzatuon of Los Angeles hugh school graduates who work for the betterment of the communnty Classmen elected were Caspar Lnotta dnstlnguushed for hrs capa ble leadership of the sensors and Bob Crllette who had achleved the posutuon of Chief Navigator of the Airport Student Body Next came the gala lnterclass Swlng Prom on january 6 followed by the Sensor Play When Stars Shnne on anuary 20 At last nt was time for the grand meetlng of all the members of the flight at the long anticipated Sensor Banquet and Nautical Prom on anuary 27 The momentous night marking the end of school llfe for eighty fave student pvlots finally arrived the grad uatnon of those who had completed sux enjoyable years of pnlotung unto a more advanced field of avnatlon being held on February l l939 Commencement speeches were gnven by Maureen Magunre and Caspar Lnotta At thus time those students leadung rn scholarship were given their awards of Cold Seals on their dnplomas Students to receuve these awards were Ceorge lchnen Anita Thomas Donald Sampson Betty Brown and jean Leaf The class then presented the airport wlth fBl99 53 to erect a new lunch park Though sad to be leavlng thelr home fueld the young pilots happnly looked forward to many more successful years In the future CASPAR LIOTTA President DONALD HOUCK Vuce Presudent BERNYTA FERKINS Secretary FRED NERNEY Treasurer BILL DE CROOT Yell Leader MRS ELSIE McLAUCHLlN Adviser MR ERNEST CHAMPION Adviser 29 Ill
