Magor H H Arnold has had a active career since graduating from the U S Military Academy in 1907 He was commanding officer of the Seventh Aero Squadron Panama and flight commander of the US Alaska flight in l934 Rising from one rank to another serving as com mandlng officer in various air fields from l922 to 1936 h was made Assistant Chief of the Air Corps In that year Today Maior General Arnold holds the important post of Chief of the Air Corps of the United States Army lOfficial Photograph U S Army Air Corps! WAR DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF THE AIR CORPS WASHINGTON March 9 I 939 To the Members of Venice High School Venice California The Army Air Corps is exceedingly pleased to know that the theme for The Ciondolaer of I939 is Aviation While we who are directly connected with Aviation feel that it is one of the most vital sublects in our national life yet to know that the young pcople of the United States are thinking along imilar lines is most gratifying human accomplishments the growth of aviation has been a gradual progression since its inception by the famous Wright Brothers Prior to the XfVorld War practically all flying was experimental Early in the World War all the nations engaged began to realize that aviation was more than a visionary s dream and by the end of hostilities the Airplane had assumed great importance as a military weapon With such a world wide knowledge acquired from actual experience with the airplane above the battle fields of Europe all nations began to use every effort and agency at their command to develop aircraft to augment the effectiveness of their land and naval forces They soon realized not only that increased numbers of aircraft but also that the airplane itself must be superior to those of potential enemies in speed range and load capacities Thus began the search by airplane designers of the world for greater horse power in engines new metals new types of structure more streamlined forms more efficient propellers better radio communications and perfection in all accessories which would give advantage to their airplanes over those of other na tions The wide spread dissemination of knowledge of and experience in aviation soon bore fruit in the use of this new method of transportation for other than The War Pilot took his knowledge and experience home and soon small groups and even whole com munities began to acquire air mindedness and the extensive commercial use of the Airplane including the transportation of mail personnel express and freight quickly followed Thus it is that the lessons .earned in the World War formed a lasting basis for the rapid development of Aircraft from the crude in efficient machines of l9l4 to the modern efficient and dependable modern airplane This efficiency and reliability is the basis of its present day use in peace ful transportation as well as of a weapon of modern Warfare The Army Air Corps sends greetings and desires to extend all good wishes to each and everyone of you in your chosen lin s of endeavor Sincerely yourS X Major General Air Corps Chief of the Air Corps ' . .
