CREECH MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS Dear Students : This year will long be remembered as the year of the Sputniks.,7 A new world of opportunity has been opened to you and others of your generation with these and other recent discoveries. However, with new opportunities come new responsibilities. you must learn to live at peace with the nations of this world. You must find ways and means of converting world energies toward bettering of condi- tions for all mankind else civilization can destroy itself. The importance of an education in the World of to- morrow is greater than it has ever been before. Make sure you take advantage of every opportunity to learn. Yours very truly, MRS. JOHN PETERS Secretary High School Principal-B. H. BREWER To the casual visitor, the perfect stranger, or the old acquaintance, the Velma-Alma School continues to present one of the brighter facets of the educational scene in Oklahoma. However, it is my firm belief that any pre- vious successes that we may have had are only a prelude to the kind of school program we must provide if we are to properly educate our young people for successful and happy lives in the free world. 6064 6 to so Grade School Principal SAM W. VANDIVER It is my desire that every grade school child have the kind of early training that will carry over for the rest of his life-good character, fair play, respect for the rights of others, and above all, a love for God. l 6 oo Oo High School Vice-Principal It certainly has been a privilege for me to work with this fine faculty and student body that we have this year. It appears to me that there is even more progress in sight for the Velma-Alma School. But. it seems as if the flu had it in for us the whole year. Bob Wade and Larry Miller are the two water boys. In this group there are seven freshmen who made the team at the end of the season. They are, hack row. left to right: Elza Ray Pollard. Darrell Ray Martin. Middle row. Harley Files. Mack Weldon. and Tony Anderson. Front row: Harold Doty and Clyde Womack. Well. boys are you enjoying yourselves lying there on the floor? If you fl0ll-l know by now. these are the big five of the basketball team. They start each game ancl as they get tired Mr. Cofer The four grrathxatingz seniors on the team this year are: Jerry Strickland. James Bryant, Bill Brown, and Jim Webb. They were all on the big five. This leaves only one of the big five to eon- tinue next year. Good luck, boys. These boys represent our Senior High Basketball team for 1057-58, lVlr. Cofer thinks very well of his team. Their maseot. manager. ancl water boy is Donald Price. The boys from le-ft to right are: Elzey Mm-reer. ,lim Wt-bb, Jerry Strieklanrl. ,Ianies llryant. llill Brown. John Sullivan, Gene Mul- lins. Tom Easley. Darrell Davis. and Jerry Nleflurry. replaees them with his other boys. They arenit always lazy. They can really get up and go when they are playing a game. But. like all of us they like to take life easy every once in a while. Jun Webb, Senior, lettered in baseball 3 years. He had the distinct honor of being chosen for the All-State Baseball team this year. We are very proud of Jim for representing Velma-Alma in this way. These are our track boys of 1957-58. At the district contest this year they repre- sented our school very well. Jerry McCurry, Jerry Strickland, and Darrell Davis are three-fourths of Velma-Alma's 880 yd. relay team. Not pictured is Terry Womack. These boys placed 2nd at regional meet in Duncan. At the State Track meet they placed 7gh. All our track boys did exceptionally well at all the track meets. It seems that Velma- Alma had a good season this spring all the way around. The baseball team had an outstanding season this year. They made the semi- finals of the O.U. Baseball Tournament. The team this year had two mascots. It seems that Darrell Davis and Ronnie Ford enjoyed going with the boys to the games. Mr. Grantham spent a lot of time getting the boys in shape for their games. Next year the boys hope to have a better ball team than this year's. With all the good material from this year it should be possible. Darrell Davis placed second at the Regional meet this year. At the State meet he placed 5th in the 180 low hurdles. At the County meet he placed lst in the 100 yard dash. Q , . 5 ' TMXSJN ,.,, N 1 1 W. W. fi ' Q - Xml. kwa Alf- -- mama, H -m,XXN1,xffxgX .,.v. Those starting at Alma or Velma were: Joyce Wig- gins, Raymond Roberson, Richard Smith, Linda Pat Clay, Charley Beavers, Glenda Rumsey, Gerald Darity, Donna Sue Thacker, Dale Cartwright, Jesse McCartney, Jerry Strickland, Ronnie Haines, Linda Lane, Jimmy Stephen- son, Sherry Mitchell, Marilyn Doan, Alton Lawrence, Vance Norton, Eual Conditt, Jackie Thacker, and Patsy Arrington. The boys and girls were good this year or they were too ashamed to tell us what they did. Vernell Maston was Carnival Princess and Charley Beavers was her escort. SECOND GRADE The students joining us our second year were: Roger Gilger from Madill, Chesley Stephens from New Mexico, Jim Webb from Ponca City, Bud Clayton from Healdton, Bill Brown from Harrisburg, and Bob Baker from Heald- ton. This is the year some of the girls got into trouble. Linda Pat, Glenda, Marilyn, and Sherry, remember that whipping??? Vernell Maston tried to get Charley Beavers from Glenda Rumsey by giving her two pages of notebook paper. But Charley was worth more than two pages because Glenda would not trade. Glenda Rumsey was Carnival Princess and Sonny Bishop was her escort. THIRD GRADE The students joining us in our third year were: Pat Thompson from Antlers, Okla., David Winkles from Burkburnett, Texas, and Eloise Martin from Madill. Glenda Rumsey left us that year to move to Montana. Sherry Mitchell was Carnival Princess and Roger Gil- ger her escort. This seemed to have started a romance between these two because every day at noon Roger would give someone candy or gum to give to Sherry and he would hide behind the door and watch her eat it. It seems Roger was very shy in his younger days. FOURTH GRADE We gained two girls this year and lost one boy. Jerry Gleason moved here from Sulphur, and Joyce Morris moved from Burkburnett, Texas. Richard Smith and Jim Stephenson will never forget this year, it seems they got a whipping almost everyday. This proved to be too much for Richard, so he moved. FIFTH GRADE This year Alan Ford moved to V-A from Healdton. and Richard Smith couldn't stay away from dear ole V-A and he moved back. Sonny Bishop got into trouble with Mrs. Sam Vandiver after putting a little-ole-bitty-harmless snake in her desk to keep until recess. Mrs. Vandiver didn't think it was as funny as Sonny did and he got a whipping. I don't believe Joyce Morris will forget this year be- cause one of her most embarrassing moments occurred during this time. Joyce had a date f unknown to her motherl with Tom McKalvin. They met at the Velma theater as planned earlier. They found seats near the front and were just sitting there enjoying the show when Mrs. Morris walked in and made Joyce move back and sit with her. SIXTH GRADE We gained two students this year-Barbara Elwell from Duncan, and David Snider from Mandford, Okla. Chesley Stephens saw fit to leave us that year. It seems we had some real-hot checker and jack play- ers. One day, Jerry Gleason and Sue Thacker were in their teacher's office supposedly cleaning it up. Instead they were playing checkers and their teacher walked in on them! Bet they were really surprised. Patsy Arrington, remember when you used to slip out of class to the rest- room and play jacks and dice? How can we ever forget the time Pat Thompson gave her boyfriend, Jim Webb, a Valentine so big the teacher had to cut the box to get it in. Didn't it embarrass you, Jim, for not giving her one? SEVENTH GRADE This year our class enlarged not only in quantity but also in quality. Neta Sue and Kenneth Harris moved here from Graham, Patsy Devers from Shidler, Priscilla Strickland from Pernell, and Lowell Doan from Arkansas. Kay Sawyers joined us at the first of the year, and left us at the end of the year. Barbara Elwell was our Annual Queen that year. Bar- bara Anderson was the candidate from the other section. Jerry Ann Gleason and Linda Lane got kicked out of Glee Club and instead of going to the studyhall they thought the bathroom was a good place to sit and talk. They hadn't planned on the teacher going to studyhall and checking on them, but sure ,nough she did. Poor Jerry Ann and Linda. EIGHTH GRADE In our eighth year Bettie Wiggins joined us from Semi- nole, Alpha Price moved from Dundee, and Chesley Ste- phens from Mexico. Glenda Rumsey moved back from North Dakota. Richard Smith saw fit to leave us again and move to Duncan. Rebecca Booth was our annual queen. Pat Thompson was candidate from the other section of the eighth grade. We will never forget the time that Eloise Martin flipped a pencil at Miss Shackelford and got a spanking. Chesley Stephens found it amusing and he got a spanking for laughing. Vance Norton tells us his most embarrassing moment was when he ripped his breeches at the show. FRESHMAN Our Freshman year we acquired six students from Claud: LaJean Bryant, James Bryant, Betty Brown, Bill Smart, Wynola Newman, and Harvey Love. Kay Saw- yers moved back to V-A from Fairfax, Buddy Gilby moved here from Wilson. Virginia Fox came from Centra- homa, Leon Payne moved from Texas, and Bill Ossen- beck from Comanche. Sherry Mitchell was our Annual Queen Candidate but we lost to the Seniors. Priscilla S. was our Carnival Queen Candidate and Harvey Love was her escort. Priscilla Strickland was also our Basketball Queen. ln geometry class one day, Sonny Bishop was wearing his jeans low so Ronnie Haines gave them a jerk, and to his surprise they came down. It embarrassed Mrs. Sny- der more than it did Sonny. Bill CSleepyheadl Smart, remember in history class when you went to sleep and Mr. Anderson let you sleep the rest of the afternoon. SOPHOMORE Our Sophomore year Paula Epley moved to V-A from our rival school, Fox, and Richard Smith moved back again from Duncan, this time finally to stay. Wynola, Newman was our Annual Queen Candidate but again we lost to the Seniors. Betty Brown was our Carnival Queen Candidate and Buddy Gilby was her escort. Glenda Rumsey was Football Queen Attendant. Twelve of us had the honor to serve at the Jr.-Sr. Ban- quet that year. They were: Vernell Maston, Wynola New- man, Barbara Anderson, Rebecca Booth, Priscilla Strick- land, Sherry Mitchell, Jerry Strickland, Jack Walters, Jesse McCartney, Eual Conditt, Ronnie Haines, and Sonny Bishop. The theme was Candy Land. Jesse McCartney and Jerry Strickland will never forget the time they chased a mouse into the girls' restroom. Neither will a few girls. .JUNIOR Our Junior year brought many honors to many of us. It also brought Buddy Norton from California, Scott Presgrove from Fox, Jonny Cooper from Sulphur, and Tessie Savage from Comanche. And Chesley Stephens moved again to Mexico. Linda Pat Clay was our Annual Queen Candidate but again we lost to the Seniors. We really worked that year making superdogs and hamburgers, and washing cars. We gave a chicken supper which turned out to be a big success. But the Seniors just had more oil than we did. Kay Sawyers was our Carnival Queen with Jerry Strickland escorting her. Barbara Elwell was Football Queen Attendant. We will never forget the Jr.-Sr. Banquet we gave the Seniors and the fun we had decorating for it. The theme for the Banquet was Mardi Gras. We gave a very fine play that year called The Board- ing House Reachf' Barbara Elwell and Jerry Strickland won the American Legion Citizenship Award. Priscilla Strickland and Jesse McCartney won the award for the All-Around Boy and Girl. Priscilla Strickland went to Girls, State. And Jerry Strickland and Jim Webb went to Boys' State. La Jean Bryant, remember how red your face would get when you would get into an argument with Mr. Taylor? Charley Beavers and Sonny Bishop, remember the whipping Mr. Vandiver gave you for driving on the school lawn? SENIOR We finally made it as Seniors. The greatest and most wonderful year of all as we leave high school and enter the world as adults. Our Senior year brought us Chesley Stephens from New Mexico and Sonny Bishop from Texas. lt also brought us many honors and awards. Our officers are: Jesse McCartney-President, Jerry Strickland-Vice-Presidentg Wynola Newman-Secre- tary, and Kay Sawyers-Treasurer. Our Student Council Representatives are: Priscilla Strickland and David Winkles. Four queens were chosen from our class. They are Football Queen-Priscilla Strickland, who is also Vice- President of National Honor Society and Head Cheer- leader. Basketball Queen--Betty Brown, who is Secretary- Treasurer of National Honor Society. Annual Queen- Virginia Fox, who was voted the most beautiful girl in high school. And Music Queen-Paula Sue Epley. She also went to All-State in Vocal Music. Pat Thompson was Basketball Queen Attendant. Not only do we have pretty girls in our class but we also have some handsome boys. James Bryant was voted the most handsome boy in high school. He is also F.H.A. King. We have a small girl with a loud mouth, who is very active in speech. Glenda Rumsey and David Winkles won the District Championship in debate and are also mem- bers of the National Forensic League. Priscilla Strickland is also a member. Barbara Ellwell won the D.A.R. Award. We gave a very outstanding performance of the classi- cal play Jane Eyref, Buddy C-ilby will always remember Kay Sawyers' slumber party. He surely didn't like that old wine. Jim Webb, remember how red your face was when you appeared at Stricklandls wedding shower to find that you were the only' boy there? About the silliest thing that happened to Barbara El- well was when she got mad at the entire band for some- one leaving his band suit at home, to find out it was she. Kay Sawyers and Celestine Barnett, remember the night you went into the wrong rest room at Berry's? Joyce Wiggins' most embarrassing moment was when she fell down in front of English class. Paula, Kay, and Barbara, remember when Mr. Biffle sent you to the office to get a spanking for talking? Eual and Jesse, was it embarrassing when Paula's and Saundra's crowns fell off? This concludes the history of the Senior Class of 1958. Ten years from now we plan to meet at the school build- ing on July 4, 1968, for a reunion. Now that we are Seniors we will be leaving Velma-Alma High School for the last time, and we sincerely hope that the coming Seniors will enjoy their years at Velma-Alma as much as we have. enc?n70 We, the Senior Class of 1958, in sound mind and healthy physique, and still sober do make this our last will and testament. We, the Senior Class of 1957-58, will the chapel seats, row 1-7 to the Juniors with the hope that you may be worthy of the high esteem. As I gaze into my crystal ball looking 10 years ahead to 1968, I see a strange land, Siberia, and there is Jesse McCartney, our Senior Class president, standing over some slaves with a long black whip in his hands. He ought to be good at making those slaves workg he had plenty of experience making his Seniors bow to his commands in high school. Kneeling by his side is his meek and obedient wife, the former Patsy Devers. Oh, there's Linda Pat Clay. There was a write-up about her in the New York Timeslg she is the world's most efficient secretary, you know. What's this? A flash from Washington, D.C. Lieutenant Harvey Love and Major Leon Payne just made the first successful land- ing on the moon. There is a rumor that Casey Stengle is going to hire James Bryant and Jim Webb to play with the Yankees next season. Those boys always were good in baseball. By the way, be sure to tune your TV in for the wrestling matches this Friday night. Kay Sawyers, the famous lady wrestler, will defend her championship. She hasn't lost a match in 3 years. Scott Presgrove has become one of the most famous people in the world. He broke the world's record for flagpole sitting. What's this? 'A wanted sign in the Post Office and it isn't Jesse James, as I thought, but David Ray Winkles. Jerry Strickland and his wife, the former Priscilla Diffie, are now the basketball coaches at V-A. They have been married for 10 years and have 5 little girls. As we look on the society page in the New York Herald we see that Sherry Mitchell is engaged to one of Rockefeller's grandsons. She finally reached her goal to marry a millionaire. Bob Baker is the new scout master for troop 101 at Velma. His star scouts are Bill Ossenbeck, Bud Clayton, and David Snyder. They have only one complaint. They want to know how long they have to be cubs. Joyce Morris is coaching the famous Red Heads basketball team. No one ever guessed she had that hidden talent. lt seems that Gerald Darity has inherited a fortune and now drives up and down Main Street in Velma all day in a 4-door red and white Cadillac convertible. My, there have really been some changes made! Paula Epley has become an expert hair stylist. I predict that soon everyone will be wearing her latest creation, Scalped, which looks just like it sounds. Jim Stepherson is quite the business man. He is the manu- facturer of the famous Stepherson's Hot-Rod automobile. La Jean Bryant has fooled everyone fincluding her teachersJ and has become a famous doctor. She is now working in the science laboratory at Mayo's where she has almost perfected her cure for the gripes. Oh, no, it can't bel Glenda Rumsey elected Governor of Okla- homa! All the speech contests she went to in high school must have come in handy. She owes her success to her high school debate coach, Kyle Perrin. Chesley Stevens is having a bit of trouble lately. He is in the exterminating business and almost exterminated himself the other day. Betty Brown, the former Betty Bryant. works in a jewelry store in Duncan and shows wedding rings to love birds. She is sending her husband, Bill, through college. Pat Thompson has achieved her fame. She is a well known dress designer for a prosperous French company. Tessie Savage, the former Tessie Ray, is living happily with her husband. They are still living at Velma. Oh, by the way, Life Magazine's latest edition has a tremendous write-up on Charley Beaver's Westem Rodeo in Montana. Telling of all these successes reminds me of Jerry Ann Gleason. She has become a success telling people how to be successful. If any of you happen to be vacationing around Las Vegas this summer, be sure to stop by the Golden Nugget. You will un- doubtedly be surprised to see the owners, who are Cotton Roberson and Richard Smith. We always knew these boys were going to make something of themselves. pfzopiecq Bill Smart has the easiest job in the world. He advertises beds by sleeping in them all day for L. D. Pryor. Mr. Brewer used to worry about Bill sleeping in all his classes. He will be glad to know that Bill finally made his sleeping pay off. 1 guess all of you know that Eual Conditt and Jackie Thacker joined the Navy after graduation. They are really full-fledged sailors now with a girl in every port! Wynola Newman received an M.R.S. degree right after grad- uating from high school. She and her family, which includes 8 children and 1 husband, are living happily on a ranch in Wyoming. What's this? A notice in the New York Tribune that Alton Lawrance has signed a 5-year contract to play football for the Chicago Bears. lt's too bad Mr. Cofer didn't realize Alton's hidden talent. Ronnie Haines has a job that really suits him. He is one of the writers for Bob Hope's TV program. lt seems he gets some of his ideas from his English 4- class in high school. Well, Alpha Price surely didn't surprise anyone. He married his Loco sweetheart after graduation and has a farm about 5 miles east of Velma. Vance Norton and Dale Cartwright are still trying to find a way to keep from getting married. They have just about backed against a brick wall because there are so many girls chasing them that they can't run much farther. Now Roger Gilger has fulfilled his highest dreams. We find him sitting in a black racer that he has just won the Indianapolis 500, but he hasn't changed much because he still can't decide whether he wants his hair blond or black. Here is Virginia Fox as the queen of England. She has as her maids two well known women, Linda Lane and Joyce Wiggins. We also see Marilyn Doan as a beauty operator which will help her a lot with her 4 little girls. Oh, look who we see now standing down on the street corner. It is none other than Gary Busby with his newspaper stand. Well, here we are in Hollywood, California, and who is the first star we see perform? None other than the one and only Buddy Norton. What's this? Neta Harris and Patsy Airington sailing on the sea! It looks as if they decided to join the Waves, and who do you think the captain of that ship is? lt's none other than Captain Lowell Doan. Jonny Cooper has really gone places with his cornet. He has gone to Alcatraz for disturbing the peace. Here in the court room we see Barbara Elwell crying on the shoulder of her favorite lawyer Allen Ford. She was just found guilty of reckless driving on the main streets of Velma. Everyone is talking about the new bathing suit that makes the women look slim and trim. The designer of this suit couldn't be anyone but our own Buddy Gilby. Here we see Kenneth Harris refereeing a boxing match in Madison Square Garden. If you happen to get picked up in New York City by a high- way patrolman, be sure to notice because it may be one of your past classmates, Sonny Bishop. Donna Sue Thacker has finally worked her way to success. She is now working as Tab Hunter's Secretary. It looks like Betty Wiggins has finally realized her wish. She is now home room mother of Jimmy Jr.'s 2nd grade class. Well, Eloise Martin finally caught up with Gordon in college, now they are happily married while living in their little ivy-covered cottage. I know you all will be happy to know that one of our Senior sponsors' dream came true. Mrs. Juanita Hallmark finally caught her man! She and Ralph are very happyg she never complains about the old beat up Buick convertible Ralph makes her drive, or never getting any new clothes. I guess it must be true love. Our other Senior sponsor has invested in a very profitable business, for himself, that is. He is president of the largest toupee manufacturing company in the United States. I guess it is pretty obvious that I am referring to Mr. Biffle. Co-Valedictorian Wynola N e W 111 a 11 speaks on entering a challenging world.
