Over S9l,OOO has been in- vested in many needed improve- ments around our campus in the past year. The football field has been enhanced by adding new lighting system, new fences, rest- rooms, and the field itself was resodded during the summer. The Juniors and Seniors were glad to have the new concession stand at the south end of the field. Glare was removed from the eyes of long suffering teachers and students on the south side of the high school when new metal blinds were installed. A new baseball field, new ten- nis courts and the modern field house on the football practice field have added much to our sport department. The horn tooters say they really appreciate the asphalt tile on the band room floor. Makes a nicer place for 7:30 a.m. practice sessions. Autumn, 1956, found the third graders housed in shiny new rooms iust north of the high school buildings. I5 4 l -sl Lines aT The water founTains were considerably shorTer This year as a result of The insTallaTion of The new waTer well, Tank and Tower. Third graders are proud of Their new buildings norTh of The high school area. Our faculty boasTs of new Teachers' aparTrnenTs near The old grade school, and general repairs were made To all The Teacherages. We're all proud of These im- provemenTs gained under The di- recTion of Mr. Davis and The Board of Education. All These Things make us even happier To say, We're from Velma-Alma. And, believe me, people from oTher parts of The sTaTe know where Velma-Alma is, Too. Wait a second, cautions Jack Sanner as he opens the door of The shop Tor Hershell Files to back the new F.F.A. pickup out. is X P S Here we catch several Track boys Taking advantage of the new dressing room facilities at the field house. This year activi- ties included a clothes drive, fun nights, intramural sports, Sadie Hawkins' Day Twirp Week and annual queen race. I The purpose of Student Council is to im- prove general relations and to represent the student body in the functions of the school. We think they have done a bang-up iob. Much of the credit should go to the spon- sor of the group, Miss Val Maples. Without her leadership and encouragement, the group would sometimes be quite lost. One of fl-ie fun n ghf acyvmes was Card playmg Teachers and all look forward to Sadie Hawkins' Day in November 1. Final Changes are explained to part of the staff by Mfg, Bgfmef auucafsfdff The staff of the yearbook has a big responsibility. Pictures of everyone enrolled in the school, plus many group and action shots must be identified and arranged. Each year The Comet has grown. An outstanding group in our high school is the Future Homemakers of America. lt was created with the purpose of better preparing the girlhood of our nation to be the home- makers of tomorrow. The teachers seem to appreciate these girls in another way -that is, their cooking ability. When the Home Ec girls make too many cookies or too much coffee, they have a habit of taking samples to the different teachers in the school. Mrs. Poteet and the girls can cook up some mighty good smell- ing things in that Home Ec Room. However, when cleaning day comes around, you should see them pushing mops, polish- ing windows, and waxing floors. These girls can sew up some awfully nice things in there too. F.H.A. helps a girl to improve herself and prepare for that future bungalow, also. if Future Farmers of America is an organiza- tion of nation-wide interest. There are 39 members in the Velma-Alma chapter, and Harold Biffle is sponsor of the group. To be a member, a boy must have had six months of supervised farm proiect. ln the past some of the V-A farmer boys have brought home nice records from livestock shows with pigs and cattle raised as F.F.A. proiects. First level of membership is the green- hand. He must be enrolled in Agriculture and know the F.F.A. creed and motto. Next is the Chapter Farmer. He is a second year boy who has at least 550.00 invested in farming. The highest level in the state is that of Junior Master Farmer. Only two per cent of the boys in the state are eligible for Tlial title. Among the worthwhile aims of F.F.A. are To develop character, train for useful citizenship, and foster patriotism, To par- ticipate in cooperative effort, and To en- courage improvement in scholarship. Officers on the front row are, left to right: James Bryant, sentinel, Jerry Strickland, vice president, Bill Brown, reporter, Harold Biffle, advisor, Lloyd Ely, president, Ray Bryant, treas- urer, and Charlie Beavers, secretary. Mr. Burnett's faith in the group has inspired them all to be a winning team. This is his view of the band. The success of the high school band has been due, in large part, to the ver- satility they have acquired. The band, while primarily a marching and concert unit, contains within its framework eleven separate ensembles and twenty-six solo performers. Also, the band has attained a greater playing proficiency through the use of all classes of music from the sym- phonic to swing. Of course, this versatility could not have been acquired without much hard work on the part of each individual in the organization. The members of the band have put forth one hundred per cent effort, and the Division I ratings at- tained reflect this attitude. While we are proud of this year's achievements, the band is already looking forward to the activities of the coming year. .Q-5' -N. Sal has worn out quite a few nets in this area during her basket- ball career, this season being one ot her best. Shirley and Floss have saved many a game by holding V-A's opponents to a very minimum of points. V-A fans will certainly miss these three cage queens next season. The Comets have thrilled many tans this past season with their tast action on the hardwood. Two of these memorable performances were in the new gymna- sium at Marlow in the District and County Tournaments. Although we were de- feated in both tournaments there was a certain amount of victory in that defeat. Our spirit shot upward when we wit- nessed the effort put out by our team, and we'll always remember these excit- ing moments. Here are the prospects for next season. JUNIOR ALLRED Bugs has cut quite a reputation for himself on the football field the past four years. To see him in the hall, you'd never guess he could speed up enough to be a track star also, but he is. He's been named an All-District football player. When he graduates, there will be a vacancy among the school bus drivers. Junior plans to go to school at Durant. KENT BERLIN Very often this year, Kent has been seen behind the school camera. An easy going personality has gained for Kent a lot of friends and a lot of iobs. Among honors Kent was vice president of Student Council, and named to All-Conference Football Team. He was Student of the Month and guest of Duncan Rotary Club for December, Plans include Baylor University and a career in dentistry. PATSY BIFFLE Patsy, who is often seen at the wheel of her brother's auto, is planning to enter a business school this autumn. Pat has been active in Future Nurses Club for the past two years. Among her other interests are Pep Club, FHA and Mixed Chorus. BILL JACK BROWN Recently seen carrying a Physics book, Bill seems to be another Albert. A pleasant disposition is a characteristic of this black haired lad. He can be seen at all hours of the day and night motoring his little, loud Ford. Uncle Sam's Navy will claim Bill soon. RAY BRYANT President of Student Council, Ray is one of the important men about campus of V-A. A member of National Honor Society the past two years, Ray has also been active in FFA and sports. Business school in Wichita Falls will be in Ray's future. EVA CHANDLER Is it Eva or Neva? You get the prize if you can tell which twin is which. Both wear smiliy and glasses, so that's no help toward telling her from her sister. But this one Cwe think she's Eval is interested in FHA and Future Nurses Club. She was the Carnival Queen Attendant last year. NEVA CHANDLER ls it Neva or is it Eva? Again your guess is as good as ours. But if this is Neva, she has been an officer in FHA this year and a member of Future Nurses Club. Principal Brewer will recommend her as an industrious office girl when she applies for that type iob after graduation. RICHARD COWAN One of the cowpunchers of our Senior Class, Richard has stacked up a record of three years in FFA. Among his other interests are shop and track in which he has been an active participant. After graduation day rolls around in May, he plans to attend Cameron College. BOB DOAN Bricklaying is the profession Bob Doan plans for himself. Guess he'll get Marilyn Cowan to mix the mortar for him, Bob has gone to school at V-A for four years. Among her hobbies are reading and Lloyd Ely. ANNE EASLEY The girl standing on the soap box spouting Shakespeare is not off her rocker-she is merely doing one of her dramatic productions that got her a special invitation to speak at O.U. Anne has been a busy girl-on the paper staff, in Glee Club and Chorus. Her ambition is to go to O.U. T aff 'lt . xgifgir X ,R W dl Gb, ' 9-Q V . . After May I7 this busy girl will spend her time as a house- wife, and may do some secretarial work also. DONALD FRANKS Donald is not the most talkative fellow in the world, but after all, someone once said, Silence is golden. This year he's proved himself to be a valuable member of the basketball team, and has had a part in play productions in previous years. His classmates showed their esteem for Larry by electing him Senior Class vice president. Taking top rank on his list of interests are Hot Rod Club and Baseball. College is among his plans for the future. SUE HOLDER Sue's favorite pastime is talking, and you'd certainly believe it to see her arguing a point with Mr. Taylor in Home Room. Sue plans to trade her cap and gown for a white cap and uniform Cnursingi after graduation.
