As you first read these words you will probably not see the truth of the statement. Disappointments, frustrations, and, for many, sheer exhaustion are still fresh in your minds. Fortunately, the good days survive in the mind long after the bad days are all but forgotten. This book, then, will help rekindle the memory of the good days. A familiar, friendly face gazing at you from these pages, or a pic- ture ofa routine evolution, will bridge the gap of years and bring back memories of friends, ports of call and the knowledge of a job well done in which each of you played an important role. For many of you this was your first experience at sea. For others it was your first peacetime deployment. No matter what your background, none of you should ever forget the long, lonely nights, the longer, hectic days, and the ever-present, endless sea. These are the heritage of all men of the sea-going profession and this deployment has entitled every man among you to boast of his qualifications in that profession. You have been tested by the force of the raging sea, by collision, fire, flooding and hard work. In the years to come, as you scan through this book, you are entitled to a deep sense of pride. The tests were dangerous and demanding. But you passed them with flying colors and performed the ship's mission in the highest standards of the Naval Service. Good Luck to each of you in the future. May you enjoy fairwinds and following seas no matter what your charted course. Lawrence Fl. Jefferis Commander, U. S. Navy Commanding
