She is an interior decorator in Chicago, and works in connection with the Beck 8x Call Construction Company. The first teacher heard from this year is Betty Starkey. She teaches Home Economics in the Crawfordsville High School. C-ne of the most interesting letters comes from Mary E. He has a branch store in Dana. Much success was made by Frances Kent as she continued her writings in books, plays, short stories, etc. She has been twice the winner of the Mavoureen Award for her splendid work in this field. From his small laboratory located in Stone Bluff, comes these words from Doctor Clark: I have witnessed seven successful spine operations, and in a later report, I hope to be able to give you the cause, prevention, and cure for the newly discovered disease, 'spinalitis'. Meredith Compton has made a successful bid into the field of jour- nalism. He is the editor of the Journal and Review. He is known for his unique style of writing editorials. Another interesting letter comes from Juliet Van Devanter. She writes, My ambition in music has come to pass. I now have my own All Girl Dance Band, and we are now located at the 'Orchid' in Denver, Colorado. The phrase, 'Jam it Josie,' comes to me quite often. From the Far East comes word that George Black is now an officer of high standing in connection with the American Navy. His letter is post-marked Tibbet, China. Mildred Minnick-Gross has also established a record for herself. She has had the same contract for over ten years. It's a marriage con- tract and she now lives in Attica where her husband is employed. As for myself-just another farmer. This concludes the round-up of the class of '39. If you wish further information on any individual, write to me and inclose a self-addressed fstampedj envelope and I will give you that information as well as their address. LOWELL SIMPSON. Across the sunshine passed a sombre shadow, And then a little comrade slipped away. As memory of some lovely springtime blossom That haunts us when the days are long and drear, Returns three fold to bless our happy moments, The spirit of our classmate lingers near. Not dead-the message of her life grows stronger. Not gone-but living since that tragic hour Within our hearts, a vibrant ageless girlhood, So long as memory holds us in its magic power. MRS. The Academic course requires four years of Englishg three years of social scienceg three years of mathematicsg two years of scienceg and two years of Latin or any foreign language. A majoris required in Mathematics, English and Social Science. A minor is required in Science an dforeign language. A major constitutes three years of work in a certain sub- ject: a minor consists of two years of work in one subject. The remaining credits are elective. Thus a person may matriculate in two or more subjects in another department and still be classed as an academic student. Freshmen who have not matriculated in Home Economics are classified as Academic students. Some of them may elect the Commercial Department in their Sophomore year. rsnxns ina Wi SN ,dl 'Kklb I u 5 lg E 'Q ,ap l id .L slsua 'D-KD 1' 1 1 1 1 4.-xv xxxxflI171l c I wg. , F il T f- N fig Jw . . , U L Q , I N31 :Aa A 1 11 -1 r a ii - ' . :2'l ' Y - ,, T -... VOCATIONAL AGRICULTURE The Vocational Agriculture Department is a very popular one because of its close relationship with everyday problems of a resident of this or any other agricultural community. The courses: Soils and Crops, Animal Hus- bandry, Dairying, Farm Management, Poultry, and Horti- culture, are so arranged as to acquaint each student thor- oughly ,with all of these subjects. Thus, with certain Academic subjects, the student is prepared to enter into any of the various fields of Vocational Agriculture which higher institutions of learning offer. Seven hours of supervised study weekly are required in order to comply with the approved Vocational course. Each student is also required to carry a project through- out the entire year under the supervision of Mr. Cade, the Vocational Agriculture instructor. The Veedersburg Chapter was organized by Mr. Cade in 1937. A Constitution was formed, and after ratification, it was sent to the State Organization for approval. After approval a charter was sent to the local chapter, signifying membership in the State F. F. A. The organization in a non-profit corporation designed to put enthusi- asm and pleasure into work and recreation of Vocational boys. The organization affords an excellent opportunity to teach Vocational students some of the fundamental principles of group leadership. Boys are taught to conduct their own meetings and to do things in an organized way. Activities, such as livestock judging contests, conservation and com- munity service projects are being sponsored by the F. F. A. The organization encourages organized recreational activities among students of Vocational Agriculture. Chapters hold Father-Son banquets, go on vacation tours, have summer outings, local and state judging con- tests, agricultural plays, minstrels, public speaking contests, bands, basket ball, soft ball, base ball, etc. The National F. F. A. was organized in 1926 in Kansas City. The organization grew rapidly, six years later 47 states, the Territory of Hawaii and Puerto Rico had formed Future Farmer Chapters. At this time there were approximately 82,000 active members in 3,500 local Chapters. It is growing in popuarity every dayg most Vocational classes have organized Chapters. The colors of the F. F. A. are gold and national blue. The motto of the F. F. A. is: Learning to do, Doing to earn: Earning to live, Living to serve. ,f snsnsnasusnsususnns nan snxns usa x usuxvsng 1-sus u nxnxnsusnxus nsnsnx-ax. I A xx Lx F ,vs Ft' f 1. Enunciation, voice, stage appearance, ability to memorize, co- operation, and responsibility, were the guiding factors. Those students who were not assigned a part aided in making the play a financial suc- cess. The benefits were used to defray Senior expenses. The play was directed by Mrs. Ruth Brown and was given in the High School Gym- nasium on April 21. WHAT HAPPENED 'ro UNCLE? The play concerned a wealthy bachelor who mysteriously disappeared from his home only .to return a week later, dressed in different clothes with a wallett containing five thousand dollars in his pocket, and a head- ache because he couldn't remember a thing that has happened to him! The essays were, however, slightly modified last year, when a series of tests were given dealing with the subject of history. The average of all tests are taken at the end of the year, determining the winner. A non-interested member of the local history class or of the D. A. R. Society grades the tests. An award is made to the student having the highest average. The award is presented at Commencement by a member of the D. A. R. Previous winners of the D. A. R. By selling candy at the ball games and by taking part in a magazine selling contest, these hard working boys and girls succeeded in raising the necessary funds to put over the most important social event of their Junior year. An educational feature presented by this same class, in March, was a show entitled O'er Lincoln's Trails, given in the High School assembly. A great deal of credit must be given to the members of the Junior Class, and to their class sponsors, for planning and carry- ing out the Junior-Senior Reception. We Seniors have found out from experience that it is hard work, and we want our suc- cessors, the Class of 1940, to know that we appreciate their efforts. nsnsuxu .1 f- fl' 0,1 6 X 7- MXN L ' x Y Sr' fi N Q':hs5 -'a v-, '62 ' f .. , iff' f J X X fdybx 7 3 ' X VK Q., W vr ' W Q T57 A ' I .9 N 54. gg! ,.,- 4 1 - , ' 43' .L SAWAX 4 .
