DEDICATION To our parents, through whose sacrifice and co-operation we are able to enjoy the benefits of higher education; to our teach- ers, whose lives are dedicated to the task of molding young minds into worthwhile pursuits; and to the school officials, through whose work we are able to enjoy the many opportunities that are afforded us. To these people we dedicate this - REMINDER OF 1954 Published by the Senior Class of VAUGHNSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL The Staff Co-Editors- ------- Jane Ellen Tudor Mary Jane Miller Business and Sales Mgrs. - -Glen Williams Mary Louise Stemen Basketball -- - Jim Evans Baseball- - -- -- -- -- -- Lloyd Collar Music - Carole Clevenger Senior Editors- ------ -Joann Edwards Larry McWilliams Junior Editor.............Marilyn Griffith Sophomore and Freshmen Editor - - - - Janice Anderson Grade Editors ----- -Barbara Jameson Keith Edwards F.F. To us who have compiled the pages of this book fifty years seems an impossible time. Fifty years ago! To the people pictured above the same phrase brings memories and pleasant ones, when they too, faced the challenge life would bring to them. These same five, the graduating class of 1904, still enjoy life with the same gusto if not the same vigor that they had at the near beginning of the century. We, the class of 1954, consider ourselves lucky to be living in this age of progress, but we feel humble in the knowledge we have gleaned in comparison with the changes the five pairs of eyes above have witnessed. We chose the following officers: President..................Larry McWilliams Vice President..................Tom Kinstle Secretary...................Mary Jane Miller Treasurer............. .Mary Louise Stcmen News Reporter...................Lloyd Collar Under the guidance of Mr. Bremer we solved the mysteries of entering high school. With much bravery we slipped by initiation inflicted upon us by the seniors. The import- ant details of the year such as choosing our flower, the American beauty Rose, our colors, Rose and Silver, and our motto were promptly disposed. As a send-off for Mr. Bremer, who was answering an army call, we sponsored a high school party and presented a chapel program. Mr. Stull then took over and joined us at our Christmas Party held in June Renner's home. After a short vacation wc came back to VHS much wiser for we were now Sophomores, however our number decreased to 19 as Mar) K Griffith moved away. Miss Jones, with the help of the following officers, was elected to show us the way. President..................Larry McWilliams Vice President...................Lloyd Collar Secretary....................Mary Jane Miller Treasurer...............Mary Louise Stemen Nows Reporter...............Jane Ellen Tudor The Christmas Dinner Party was held in Janice Anderson's home. During the year we sold T-shirts to enrich our coffers. The highlights of the year were: The Leap Year Party wc sponsored for the high school students, the girls' serving at the Junior-Senior Prom, and our accomplishments in music, scholarship, and athletics September 1952 dawned bright and fair on 19 eager Juniors, although Sue Rohrer left us in October. Our five able class officers were: President..................Keith Garberson Vice President...................Lloyd Collar Secretary...........................Mary Jane Miller Treasurer.....................Alton Stephens News Reporter...........Mary Louise Stemen Under the splendid direction of Miss Myers we presented No Place To Park. which began oar dramatic episodes. Since we were quite proud of our selection of class rings we showed them off with great flourish. Together the Juniors and 53 Seniors presented a chapel program at Christmas time. Carole Clevenger opened her home at Christmas for our dinner party. The Prom proved a grand success with its Maytime theme. The winding of the Maypnle. the crowning of the May Queen, and Tiptoe Through the Tulips will hold the memory of our Prom always dear to us The biggest year 1953-54 finally arrived as we SENIORS entered our last year in these hallowed halls of knowledge. By the side of our following class officers Miss Myers again reigned to guide us through this great year. President....................Keith Garberson Vice President...................Lloyd Collar Secretary.....................Mary Jane Miller Treasurer.......................Tom Kinstle News Reporter Mary Louise Stemen Our plans for Freshmen initiation were carried out at our high school party We decided that Washington and New York would be our class trip destination. Our Senior Christmas Party was enjoyed in the home of Ma ry Louise Stemen. In January we presented an operetta Hooray for Youth under Miss Jones and Miss Myers. Our play One Foot In Heaven was successfully produced on April 2. Throughout our high school career we have accomplished great feats in scholarship, music, dramatics, and athletics. These proved that we were trying to the best of our ability to carry out our motto: Whatever is worth dome is worth doing well. B 14 SENIOR CLASS LARRY McWilliams Science. For our play we chose a three-act hillbilly comedy, complete with a hillbilly band, entitled Cornin' Round the Mountain. The cast of characters was carefully chosen to get the best results. Our ticket sales boomed and a splendid performance was given on the night of November 6. The plot of the story was to get the Skitter's daughter. Corney Bell, married to the city feller whom she met at a square dance. Corney Bell got her chosen man and the play ended happily with a square dance. The Seniors definitely felt that they had been hurled through space as they passed the sure and planets on their way into outer space, when they were entertained by the Juniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. The subdued lights flickering over walls and ceilings: the flying saucers, mobiles, and hanging columns, contrasting with the dark background, so beautifully and effectively carried out the theme, Out of This World. 25 C.S. The Glee Clubs contained 55 members--28 in the Girls' Glee Club and 27 in the Boys' Glee Club. These groups combined to form the Mixed Chorus. To begin the year our mixed chorus was asked to sing in the Sesqui-Centennial pageant at the Putnam County Fair. A different group went each night because of inadequate facilities for the entire chorus. The marching band also went to the fair for two days, and with the steady drum beat and various marches showed the rest how good we were. One of our biggest attractions was the evening we formed the letters OHIO on the stage of the grandstand with two other high school bands. The Christmas program was our next important event. The band opened the program with a concert. This was followed by the Christmas Cantata The Dawn of Christmas put on by the mixed chorus with various soloists, duets, and trios. The soloists for this were Jane Ellen Tudor and Barbara Jameson; the duets were Tom Kinstle and James Evans; Carole Clevenger and Mary Louise Stemen; the trio was Mary Louise Stemen, Carole Clevenger and Bill Griffith. The accompanist for the group was Mary Jane Miller. On January 23 a group of 22 from the chorus and band went to Ottawa for the Putnam County Music Festival. All enjoyed the practice and our directors. The director for chorus was Dr. J.P. Kennedy from Bowling Green University; for band was Mr. Fred- erick Ebbs of Baldwin Wallace College. During basketball season formation band performed at the basketball games. Each formation brought out a new idea. Ones that were very outstanding were T Got Spurs and Talk of the Town formations where the majorettes showed their greatest attractions and ability. The annual Farmers' Institute added more to our busy year. Concert band opened the evening program with several numbers. The operetta Hooray For Youth was next presented by the Senior Class. The background of this play was proving that delinquents are not born bad but just misguided. It turned out a huge success and afterwards many actually thought or said-hooray for youth!. Contest day, April 3, we will find the Glee Clubs, Mixed Chorus and Band Ready to go to Bluffton. After hard practice all hope for the best and a trip to State. Spring Festival plans are also being worked upon. The date has not been set, as yet; but all are looking forward to it with great anticipation. 38 FRONT ROW.
