Chosen for the executive duties of the class were: President Bill Syfert Vice-President David Young Secretary Nancy Ellen Davies Treasurer Shirley Winkle News Reporter Marilyn Smith With the able assistance of Mrs. Myers, our class co-operated to make its last year a huge success. In scholarship, music, and athletics, we were outstanding. In Senior Scholar- ship Tests, Marilyn Smith ranked third in the county. Owen Tudor placed in the upper twenty-five. Seven Senior boys displayed their talents in basketball with four- Bill Syfert, David Young, Duane Young, and Jack Weseli-- in the starting “five . Ann Barnes served as editor-in-chief of the PARROT, aided by several Seniors on the staff. Melodious notes, from voice and instruments of the Seniors, did much to enrich the glee clubs, band, and ensembles. Sponsors of the first high school party, we duly initiated the Freshmen into high school. Our annual pheasant fry ’ at David and Duane Young’s home was a feast fit for a king--as can be testified to by any Senior. Jack Weseli was host to our Christmas Party, where we “made merry with contests and a gift exchange. A scrap paper drive, concessions at basketball games and during school noons, magazine subscriptions and Christmas card selling increased our class trip fund. Our Senior play, “Green Valley , a comedy-fantasy, was successfully pre- sented in April to a packed house. This, too, added to our already bulging treasury. Our chapel program, a minstrel, was complete with '‘darkies and southern melo- dies. The Junior-Senior Prom will long be remembered for the enjoyable moments spent there. And to culminate our efforts, a trip to New York City, with a stop-over in Washington, was a never-to-be-forgotten event. 11 Class History In September, 1948, Vaughnsville High gained much in admitting through her hallowed doors 21 alert members. This illustrious class saw fit to elect the following officers: President Vice-President Secretary Treasurer News Reporter Bill Syfert Bob Reed Ann Barnes Ann Barnes Marilyn Smith Guided by Mr. Jones; the green” Freshmen were introduced into the mysteries of high school. Our Freshman year was one of party giving. After a needed period of rest, the infinitedly older Sophomores, 19 in number, having lost Bob Reed and Ronald Young, chose Miss Jones to swing us through another year of activities and studies. The capable officers elected were: President Bill Syfert Vice-President David Young Secretary Ann Barnes Treasurer Shirley Winkle News Reporter Marilyn Smith A high spot of the year was the Christmas party, with Rolland Auchmuty as host. The school year 1950-51 found the class role intact with nineteen jaunty Juniors. We were all set to begin a memorable chain of activities under our able advisor, Miss Myers. To boost our class through the year, we elected: President Bill Syfert Vice-President David Young Secretary Nancy Ellen Davies Treasurer Shirley Winkle News Reporter Marilyn Smith Our Junior play, Bill's Night Out , displayed our dramatic ability and was met with much praise. We indeed felt important, and justly so, when our class rings arrived. Our chapel program, as befitting our many and varied talents, was a combination of music and skits. The prom made evident our flair for decoration and our originality in its “Circus theme. Amid gay balloons, gaudy crepe streamers, freak side shows, a big top”, trapeze acts, and circus band, a spell of enchantment was woven—a fitting climax to a busy year. The all-important year arrived. Mrs. Myers proved to be the steadying hand, aided by the following: President Bill Syfert Vice-President David Young Secretary Nancy Ellen Davies Treasurer Shirley Winkle News Reporter Marilyn Smith Outstanding in scholarship, athletics, and music, the Seniors proved to be a noteworthy class. It was with mingled feelings of regret and happiness and many fond memories that we crossed the stage to receive our diplomas and bring to an end our days at Vaughnsville School. 12 SHIRLEY WINKLE Mathematics, Science Scholarship Team « Glee Club And Mixed Chorus - - « ••Bill' Night Out” “Green Valley”- - Reminder Staff - Parrot Staff - - “ Treasurer ------- Head Librarian - - ------------------ ---------4 1. 2. 3, 4 ---------3 . . . . 4 ---------4 -----3, 4 - -2. 3, 4 ---------4 7 Years MARILYN SMITH Science Scholarship Team - - -----1, 2, 3, 4 Glee Club And Mixed Chorus------------ 1, 2, 3, 4 Band------- 6 Years Bill’s Night Out”..............-3 Green Valley”----------------- 4 Reminder Staff - -- -- -- -- - 4 Parrot Staff - -- -- -- -- -- 3, 4 Cheerleader - -- -- -- -1,2, 3, 4 News Reporter-------------1, 2, 3, 4 4-H------------------------------4 Years ROLLAND AUCHMUTY Agriculture, Science Scholarship Team - -- -- -- -- 4 Basketball - -- -- -- --1,2, 3, 4 Baseball - -- -- -- -- -- -- - 1 Glee Club And Mixed Chorus---------1 Band...............------6 Years “Bill's Night Out”------------3 “Green Valley”-----------------4 Reminder Staff — ----------- 4 F.F, A, - -- -- -- -- - 1, 2, 3, 4 4-H--------------------------- Years JANICE WILLIAMS Commercial Glee Club And Mixed Chorus----------1,2, 3, 4 Band ------------ -1 Years Bill's Night Out” -........3 Green Valley” ............4 Reminder Staff - -- -- -- -- - 4 Parrot Staff - -- -- -- -- -- 3, 4 4-H--------------------7 Years ANN BARNES Commercial Scholarship Team - -- -- -- -- 2 Glee Club And Mixed Chorus ------- -1, 2, 3, 4 Band--------------- 5 Years “Bill's Night Out”--------------3 “Green Valley”------------------4 Reminder Staff - -- -- -- -- 3, 4 Parrot Staff - -- -- -- -- --3, 4 Cheerleader - -- -- -- -- 2, 3, 4 Secretary - -- -- -- -- -- - 1,2 Treasurer- - -- -- -- -- -- - 1 4-H---------------------- 3 Years OWEN TUDOR Mathematics Scholarship Team------------2, 4 Glee Club And Mixed Chorus ------- -1, 2, 3, 4 Band - -- -- -- .- -..-6 Years ’•Bill's Night Out”------------3 Green Valley”--------------- 4 Reminder Staff--------------- 4 Parrot Staff------------------4 F.F.A.......................1.2 4-H----------------------7 Years JACK WESELI Agriculture, Science Scholarship Team - -- -- -- -- 4 Basketball...............- 1, 2. 3. 4 Baseball....................1,2, 3. 4 Glee Club And Mixed Chorus - - 2, 3 Band -------------------- - 6 Years “Bill’s Night Out”-------------- 3 “Green Valley”------------------ 4 Reminder Staff- - -- -- -- -- - 4 F. The first big event was the class play entitled, “Date Bait”. Another money making project during the year was the selling of programs and schedules and school pencils at the home games. Many an otherwise wayward nickel was caught in our pencil vending machine. A Christmas dinner party was held at the home of Marlene Foulkes. Every- one enjoyed the food, recreation and gift exchange tremendously. The Juniors sponsored a high school party November 16, which was enjoyed by all who attended. The Prom theme was that of swash-buckling pirate days. Walking the plank, gloating over long-buried treasure and participating in a regular attack by a pirate band added to the interest of the evening. The delectable dinner was furnished by the mothers of the Juniors on this memorable day of April 25. The class of '53 was well represented in all activities. Eight Juniors were represented in the band and a majority took part in the Glee Clubs and Mixed Chorus. In sports, four boys made the first twelve on the varsity. Eleven Juniors were represented on the Parrot Staff and two on the Reminder Staff. 27 HAWKEY’S REXALL PHARMACY Columbus Grove Ohio Compliments Of AGNER FOOD MARKET Everything For The Table - Everyday Low Prices Columbus Grove Ohio BAER’S SHOE STORE Footwear For All The Family Columbus Grove Ohio Compliments Of E. Future Farmers of America The National Emblem of the Future Farmers of America is significant and meaningful in every detail. Used by members in all recognized units of the organization, it is made up of five symbols: The owl, the plow, and the rising sun, within the cross section of an ear of corn, which is surmounted by the American Eagle. Upon the face of the emblem appear also the words ‘'Vocational Agriculture” and the letters “F. F. A.” The owl is symbolic of wisdom and knowledge; the plow is the symbol of labor and tillage of the soil; the rising sun is emblematic of progress and the new day that will dawn when all farmers are trained and have learned to co-operate; the cross section of an ear of corn represents common agricultural interests since corn is native to America and grown in every state; and the eagle is indicative of the national scope of the organization. 71 Compliments Of Hartman Sons Columbus Grove The Union Bank Co.
