We chose the following officers to guide us during this momentous year: President---------------------------------------Ray Stemen Vice-President--------------------Marvin Griffith Secretary-------------------------Carolyn Myers Treasurer---------------------------Marilyn Jones News Reporter-----------------------------------Don Krouse Mrs. Myers, our class advisor, helped us tremendously to make this, our last year, such an enjoyable one. The class of '51 accounted for innumerable accomplishments and indeed did them- selves and their school proud. Of the four Seniors who took the Senior Scholarship Tests, all four ranked, with Bill Myers having first in the county; Don Krouse, third; Carolyn Myers, fourth, and Marilyn Jones, honorable mention. Ray Stemen and Mary Griffith were co-captains of our basketball team and Marilyn Jones served as Editor-In- Chief of the Parrot. Bill Myers and Marilyn Jones, Co-Editors of the yearbook staff, were assisted by the entire calss in editing The Reminder. In the field of music, our class was well represented in the school band, glee clubs, solo work, and in ensembles. Our class enjoyed several parties, especially the one sponsored by us, at which we initiated the Freshies. We had a black-robed jury who passed sentence on the unfortu- nates. Another party was held after our magazine subscription contest with the losers treating the winners to a Canasta party at Marilyn Jones's house. Ask Bill Myers if he likes ripe olives! A royal feast was served at our annual Christmas Party which was held at Ray Stemen's. Contests and a gift exchange completed the evening's entertainment. To provide funds for our Senior trip, various money making projects were carried out. We sold Christmas cards and magazine subscriptions, collected tax stamps, and operated a concession stand at noons and at home ball games. We also sold ads for our Reminder. In April our class turned professional to star in the play, Rest Assured, a three- act comedy by Donald Payton. The cast was as follows: Mr. Morlock----------------------------Bill Myers Mrs. Morlock------------------------Marilyn Jones Mary, their daughter----------------Carolyn Myers Jessica, another daughter----------Nona Altstaetter Mildred, the maid-------------- Mary -Lou Edwards Joe Lanconi, Mary's fiance----------Theron Jackson .Luigi Lanconi, Joe's papa-------------------Marvin Griffith Martha; Luigi's departed wife---Dolores Gorman Lucifer---------------------------Kermit Salisbury Akers, Morlock's Secretary--------------Don Collar George Plew, Attorney---------------------------Ray Stemen Mrs. Schmaltz-----------------------Colleen Vance Dr. Brown---------------------------------------Don Krouse Mr. Black, Mortician----------------- John Smith Jake, sixty year old cockney newsboy--Jack Myers Mrs. Frinck, German Washerwoman--Colleen Vance We had an enjoyable time at the Prom--it was really a big success, Juniors. A trip to New York by train served as a fitting climax to our unforgettable year. 8 RAY STEMEN Agriculture, Science Basketball...........1.2, 3.4 Baseball- - - ------ - - - - 1,2, 3.4 Glee and Mixed Chorus------- ......................1.2. 3.4 Band-----------------6 years The Perfect Idiot .........3 Rest Assured ------------ 4 F.F. They elected the following officers to guide them for their first year, with Miss Vera Soldner as counselor. (As you can see from the officers chosen we had a majority of boys. ) Bill Myers-----------------------------President Ray Stemen------------------------Vice-President Donald Collar------------------------ Secretary Marilyn Jones--------------------------Treasurer Marvin Griffith-----------------------------News Reporter We came through the initiation with flying colors and at the last high school party of the year, we succeeded in giving the Seniors a proper send-off. The yuletide season was given a favorable climax by a class party at the home of Bill Myers. The following year opened brightly for a group of studious Sophomores who chose Miss Jones as advisor and a year of fun and friendship began in full swing. We selected the following to see us through our second year: Ray Stemen-----------------------------President Marvin Griffith-------------------Vice-President Carolyn Myers--------------------------Secretary Marilyn Jones--------------------------Treasurer Bill Myers----------------------------------News Reporter We held a successful Christmas party at Carolyn Myers's and presented a hilarious St. Patrick's day program in chapel. At the Junior-Senior Prom (a Southern theme) we donned black faces to provide waiters and entertainers for the upperclassmen. A theater party and a delicious luncheon party afterwards at Gorman's made a prime social event. Fifteen wise Juniors marched into school for the year 1949-'50, going into a year of fun and experience. Electing the same officers as the previous year and with Miss Marie Myers as our sponsor, we started in a whirl of memorable and fascinating events with the Junior play. The play, The Perfect Idiot, was a huge success and will long be remembered for the laughter it produced. Our Christmas party at Miss Myers's was one of the best and our Easter chapel, a mixture of music, fun, and sobriety, was ex- cellently presented. The PROM took us back to the days of the barbershop quartette, bicycles built for two, and the gay ninety atmosphere of Diamond Jim's Tavern (complete with a bar); all lit by kerosene chandeliers, oil lamps, and candles--producing a memory that will linger to every member of our class whenever he will feel the soft breeze of a spring night. Our Senior year arrived and we found Mrs. Janet Myers at the post, ready to guide and help us through this final year. With acclamations in music, scholarship, dramatics, and athletics, our class became the leading group in the high school and to the strains of the traditional Pomp and Chivalry we marched into the auditorium (May 21) to give our last farewell--Commencement! 10 NONA ALTSTAETTER Science Glee end Mixed Chorus-- - - - ...................1.2.3.4 The Perfect Idiot ----------3 Rest Assured ---------------4 Parrot Staff-----------------3 Reminder Staff-------------- 4 Girls' 4-H.............5 years MARY LOU EDWARDS Social Studies Glee and Mixed Chorus----- ...................1.2.3.4 The Perfect Idiot .........3 Rest Assured ..............4 Band----- 3 years Reminder Staff-------------4 Parrot Staff--------------3.4 Girls' 4-H------------------7 years THERON JACKSON Commercial Basketball--------------- 1.2 Glee and Mixed Chorus-------- ......................1.2.3.4 The Perfect Idiot ---------3 Rest Assured -------------- 4 Band------------------8 years Reminder Staff-------------4 Parrot Staff------------ 3,4 JACK MYERS Agriculture Basketball.................2.3 Baseball...................2.3 Glee and Mixed Chorus--2, 3.4 The Perfect Idiot ..........3 Rest Assured ...............4 Reminder Staff---------------4 Band------------------ 6 years F. FIRST ROW: Shirley Winkel, Nancy Ellen Davies. Bill Syfert, David Young. Marilyn Smith. Miss Myers, (Advisor). The school year 1950-'51 proved to be an interesting and busy one for the Juniors. The first big event was the production of a delightful comedy, Bill's Night Out. It was a great success. Another money making project was that of selling programs and pencils with a basketball schedule on them, at all home games. The only other one was a paper drive held near the end of the year. A Christmas party was held at the home of Nancy Ellen Davies. Everyone had a marvelous time and enjoyed the games, gifts, and refreshments tremen- dously. A high school party sponsored by the Juniors featured a magician and was enjoyed by all who attended. Our great high light of the year was the PROM on April 27, when the Juniors were hosts to the Seniors. On this memorable evening the gymnasium was turned into a gay and hilarious circus ground where anything could and did happen The class of '52 was well represented in all musical activities. Twelve Juniors added musical tones in the band and all but three of the nineteen took an active part in the Glee Clubs and mixed chorus. In sports, three boys made the first five varsity and four played reserve. Ten Juniors were represented on the Parrot Staff and two on the Reminder Staff. 15 Sophomore Class SECOND ROW. The band contains ten trumpets, thirteen clarinets, nine saxes, four trombones, two basses, two baritones, three alto horns, two flutes, six percussions, and one glockenspiel. We spent two enjoyable but tiresome days marching and playing at the fair. Not too long after that there was a fall festival. It should be called a winter festival because we all froze, it was a very cold night. The night was spent marching and playing with all the Putnam County bands in a parade at Ottawa. The band spent one of its best years making formations at basketball games. Under the guidance of Miss Jones we played and marched at all home games except two which unavoidable circumstances caused us to miss. SECOND ROW: FIRST ROW: Donald Jameson, Betty J. We have a full spring of practice, work, and fun planned for us. On April 14, the district auditions will be held at Ada. The state, if we get there, is in Springfield on April 28. The Vaughnsville High School Spring Festival, in which the band will partici- pate is to be held in the V. H. S. Gym on Sunday April 22. Three of our local band members represented our school in the district festival held at Kenton on February 17. Those chosen to go were Janice Williams, clarinet, Ray Dean Stemen, tenor saxophone; and David Young, cornet. Bill Myers, flute, was also chosen but was unable to attend. The Girls' Glee Club, composed of thirty members, includes all girls in high school and is accompanied by Janice Williams. It will present a program at the Baccalaureate. The Boys' Glee Club with thirty-one members is accompanied by Carolyn Myers. They furnished music for the afternoon farmers' institute program. A high light of the mixed chorus's year was a successful Christmas presen- tation of The Hallelujah Chorus, Hark The Bells Of Christmas Ringing and White Christmas. The chorus of sixty-one voices is accompanied by Nancy Ellen Davies. The Christmas concert included numbers by both Glee Clubs. Eight members of the Glee Clubs were chosen to take part in the District Music Festival held at Kenton. Future Farmers of America The National Emblem of the Future Farmers of America is significant and meaningful in every detail. Used by members in all recognized units of the organ- ization, it is made up of five symbols: The owl, the plow, and the rising sun, within the cross section of an ear of corn, which is surmounted by the American eagle. Upon the face of the emblem appear also the words Vocational Agriculture and the letters F.F.A. The owl is symbolic of wisdom and knowledge; the plow is the symbol of labor and tillage of the soil; the rising sun is emblematic of prog- ress and the new day that will dawn when all farmers are trained and have learned to co-operate; the cross section of an ear of corn represents common agricultural interests since corn is native to America and grown in every state; and the eagle is indicative of the national scope of the organization. 35 LdrWt âtW B uaci aA Wte.
