Senior Memoirs In the year of 1947, fourteen young hopefuls'entered the ‘portals of learning to begin their last lap of public school education. This group of students lost no time in organizing by choosing the following officers: President, Carol Winkle: Vice-President, Paul Jackson; Secretary, Colleen Bryan: Treasurer, Betty Thomas; News Reporter, Ruth Miller. Miss Virginia Zirkle was advisor. Early during the year, this class decided to “Look on the bright side and polish up the dark. This has been a most consistent theme throughout their high school career. For their general cheerfulness has done much to add to the pleasantness of school atmosphere during the four years. In the Sophomore year, a little extra zest had to be added to the ‘polishing up for the already small group was made smaller by the departure of Betty Thomas and Norma Maxwell. The officers for this year were: President, Johnnie Foulkes; Vice- President, Carol Winkle; Secretary, Catherine Thomas; Treasurer, Ruth Miller; and News Reporter, Marilyn Myers. Miss Jones counseled the group during this second year. The ‘bright side really was the selection of class rings, and the lend- ing hand by serving for the prom dinner. Looking to the future, these energetic people secured a nest egg for their treasury by selling Viking shirts and by collect- ing sales tax stamps. The Junior year was a busy one. Janet Rimer became a member to make a lucky thirteen. The officers; President, Johnnie Foulkes; Vice-President, Dean Litten; Secretary, Carol Winkle; Treasurer, Marilyn Myers; News Reporter, Janet Rimer. Miss Myers was sponsor. Early in the school year, the class ‘polished up their dramatic talent to present “A Date With Judy to a very large and a most appreciative audience. The ‘bright side for the upperclassmen was the prom with The Old South used as the theme. Guests and Juniors alike accounted for that evening as one well spent. Time flies! In September 49. the thirteen became THE SENIORS. The officers varied only a little from the previous year, Paul Jackson was selected as Vice-Presi- dent and Catherine Thomas, News Reporter. Fun and hard work under the supervision of Mrs. Myers made the year memorable. As the goals became visible and more realistic the ‘bright side’ grew brighter. The coins clinked in the treasury and plans for the trip became definite --the itinerary, Detroit, Port Colborne, Toronto, and Niagara Falls. Keeping scholastic achievements at a high peak, doing extracurric- ular activities--music, basketball, yearbook, newspaper and the class play, House of a Thousand Thrills , required the ‘polish’ that fulfilled to the highest, the motto: Look on the bright side and polish up the dark.” 11
