We hope the Reminder will bring back some of the pleasant memories we experienced in our final year at V. H. S. --memories like the fun of our school parties, the thrill of the Junior-Senior Banquet, the fun of after school activities, the excitement of our different games, the glow of real pleasure we experienced in our theatrical performances and the pride and satisfaction in our classwork which was rewarded at Commencement. This Reminder is a review of the past to keep and cherish for the future. School Views Chemistry Lab Future Scientists! The field of sports found a large number of Seniors adding to the school's athletic laurels. Paul Jackson was captain of the basketball team. The Class of 50 was prominent in journalistic endeavors, with Carol Winkle acting as Editor-in-Chief of the Parrot and assisted by Catherine Thomas performed the duties of leading the editorial staff of the •'Reminder . Our dramatic ability was ably displayed in our presentation of the Senior Play, The House of a Thousand Thrills . Another high point in the year occurred when we were royally entertained by the Juniors at the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The class ended its high school career with a boat trip to Toronto, Canada, and Niagara Falls. When at commencement, we embarked upon the next step in the voyage of life, we took leave of our school days with sincere regret mingled with pleasant memories of our unforgetable experiences in V. This group of students lost no time in organizing by choosing the following officers: President, Carol Winkle: Vice-President, Paul Jackson; Secretary, Colleen Bryan: Treasurer, Betty Thomas; News Reporter, Ruth Miller. Miss Virginia Zirkle was advisor. Early during the year, this class decided to “Look on the bright side and polish up the dark. This has been a most consistent theme throughout their high school career. For their general cheerfulness has done much to add to the pleasantness of school atmosphere during the four years. In the Sophomore year, a little extra zest had to be added to the ‘polishing up for the already small group was made smaller by the departure of Betty Thomas and Norma Maxwell. The officers for this year were: President, Johnnie Foulkes; Vice- President, Carol Winkle; Secretary, Catherine Thomas; Treasurer, Ruth Miller; and News Reporter, Marilyn Myers. Miss Jones counseled the group during this second year. The ‘bright side really was the selection of class rings, and the lend- ing hand by serving for the prom dinner. Looking to the future, these energetic people secured a nest egg for their treasury by selling Viking shirts and by collect- ing sales tax stamps. The Junior year was a busy one. Janet Rimer became a member to make a lucky thirteen. The officers; President, Johnnie Foulkes; Vice-President, Dean Litten; Secretary, Carol Winkle; Treasurer, Marilyn Myers; News Reporter, Janet Rimer. Miss Myers was sponsor. Early in the school year, the class ‘polished up their dramatic talent to present “A Date With Judy to a very large and a most appreciative audience. The ‘bright side for the upperclassmen was the prom with The Old South used as the theme. Guests and Juniors alike accounted for that evening as one well spent. Time flies! In September 49. the thirteen became THE SENIORS. The officers varied only a little from the previous year, Paul Jackson was selected as Vice-Presi- dent and Catherine Thomas, News Reporter. Fun and hard work under the supervision of Mrs. Myers made the year memorable. As the goals became visible and more realistic the ‘bright side’ grew brighter. The coins clinked in the treasury and plans for the trip became definite --the itinerary, Detroit, Port Colborne, Toronto, and Niagara Falls. Keeping scholastic achievements at a high peak, doing extracurric- ular activities--music, basketball, yearbook, newspaper and the class play, House of a Thousand Thrills , required the ‘polish’ that fulfilled to the highest, the motto: Look on the bright side and polish up the dark.” 11 12 Junior Class BACK ROW: L«(t to Right: Donald Collar, Kermlt Sallsburg, Ray Dean Stemcn, Jack Myers, Colleen Vance. On November 4, a cast composed of the entire class presented a hilarious farce, “The Perfect Idiot.“ The only other money project during the year was the selling of programs at the home basketball games. A Christmas party was held at the home of Miss Kfyers. Everyone enjoyed the recreation and gift exchange. The Juniors sponsored a high school party in March with St. Patrick’s as the theme. The latter part of the evening was spent dancing. The Junior high light of the year was that annual event, the PROM. On that memorable night the Juniors and their guests went back to the period of the Gay Ninties. For the evening, the auditorium donned the aspect of a most respectable tavern. The dinner guests were served a very gratifying meal by the Junior Mothers and received enthusiastically the entertainment featuring a Barber Shop Quartette, and other numbers appropriate to the era. In extra-curricular activities the Juniors held their own. The music department claims nine for the band, almost one hundred percent for the glee clubs and two for special music events. Two represented the class in Varsity basketball and three, the Reserves. The paper staff made use of the services of eleven Juniors. _ 14 Sophomores BACK ROW: MIDDLE ROW: FRONT ROW: Left to Right: Janice Williams, Jack Wcaell, David Young. LINE COPY STRIPPING - VaughnsWHe Future Farmers of America The National Emblem of the Future Farmers of America is significant and mean- ingful in every detail. Used by members in all recognized units of the organization, it is made up of five symbols: the owl, the plow, and the rising sun, within the cross sec- tion of an ear of corn, which is surmounted by the American eagle. Upon the face of the emblem appear also the words “Vocational Agriculture' and the letters F.F.A. The owl is symbolic of wisdom and knowledge; the plow is the symbol of labor and tillage of the soil; the rising sun is emblematic of progress and the new day that will dawn when all farmers are trained and have learned to co-operate; the cross section of an ear of corn represents common agricultural interests since corn is native to America and grown in every State: and the eagle is indicative of the national scope of the organization. 21 Vaughnsville MISS MARGUERITE JONES Conductor Our band, composed of forty-eight members has been active in several affairs this year. They made their first appearance of the year at the Putnam County Fair and took part in the mass band presentation. We have been proud of our formations at the basketball games and have enter- tained the fans with numbers played between games. The band took part in the Christmas program sponsored by the music department and featured as one of their numbers “White Christmas’ . BACK ROW: Left to Right: Donald Jameson. Marilyn Griffith. However, when we consider a few things beside winning percentage and tourney laurels we see that our season was really a good one. First of all, we did win more games than we lost, we had best center in the county, and we averaged 48.4 points per game, good in any league. Paul was the fourth highest scorer in the county with two hundred and eighty four points. We beat our arch rivals, Comer, twice, both games being well played thrillers. Other well played games were the Alumni, Shawnee, Continental, and Pandora. Everyone had a lot of fun this year, traveling to and from the games, and everyone will remember the attempted game at Oakwood. Another thing to consider is the fact that many Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors were used, gaining a lot of valuable experience. Lastly Vaughnsville’s good sportsmanship reputation was kept intact and this in itself was enough to warrant calling the season a successful one. The Junior High team, coached by Mr. Fred Bremer, had a record of five wins and seven losses this season. All the boys from the seventh, eighth, and Freshman classes, twenty four in number, were on the squad. With this young and promising material, Vaughnsville should easily maintain its past record of good and enthusiastic basketball for years to come. 31 Reserves BACK ROW: Left to Right: Lane Bushong, Jerry Basinger.
