S NIOR OFFICERS Lett to right Borqny Ytgard Secretary Gerald Pells Treasurer Helyn Coqdill Senior Representative Pat McCauley Vice President Lloyd Anderson President Mr Omdahl Adviser Barbara Ward Salutatorian Helyn Cogdill Vale 23, ,fzzzffevap sewn Pile dictorian This year s senior class has turned out to be a pleasant surprise to the whole school includ ing themselves Last Class Day when they as Juniors moved into the front section in the audi torium everyone looked slightly on the dubious side thinking that here was a class that wouldn t leave much of a record The strange part was that the class itself was inclined to agree with such thoughts They had the whole summer to mnk about it There wasnt much else to tnink about while crawling on all fours trying to tell the weeds from the spinach and vice versa or while engaged in various other menial tasks Soon after the first clay of school in the fall of l942 the seniors called a meeting of the class and it was decided in short order that the class was going to be an active one. The only trouble was that with a war on many activities would have to contribute either directly or indirectly to the national war effort. To any other class that might have meant discouragement from the start-but not so to this stalwart class of 43. They took it upon themselves to sell war stamps and bonds weekly during the whole school year. lean Miller and Helyn Cogdill were at once appointed co-chairmen of the War Stamp Committee and under their pecuniary eyes sev- eral thousand dollars worth of stamps and bonds were sold. The super salesmen who aided and abetted in this all out effort to urge the student body to invest in the United States were: Barbara Ward, David Rothausen, Vernon Sims, Niles lordan, Bill Wilcox, Marjorie Dow, Vir- ginia Patten, Barbara LaPlant, Lore Newkirk, Gerald Pells, Borgny Ytgard, Ronald Amundson, Arlene Glad, Akardine Hatcher, Alan McLean, Dorothy Holtcamp, lean Holmes, and Frank Lloyd. Thinking they weren't doing enough and re- -91 membering that there were still people who thought the seniors were an inactive bunch the class began to make plans to handle the scrap drive The Success Story of the Scrap Drive may be found elsewhere but here it is to be emphasized that the captains and all the lieutenants were members of the senior class and that it was due to their enthusiastic efforts in planning and carrying out the scrap drive that it was acclaimed such a big success The traditional Senior Dance usually held in the fall was indefinitely postponed due to cir cumstances beyond the control of the commit tees who tried their best to promote the idea. The Penny Drive was also a senior project. Headed by Arlene Glad the math whiz the drive continued for several weeks and many a students penny bank was ravaged by its patriotic owner. Seniors who were rewarded for their four years of diligent study by being among the first ten scholastically in the class were in this order: Helyn Cogdill Valedictorian' Barbara Ward Salutatorian- Arlene Glad Robert Bart Borgny Ytgard Lois Ayers Lore Newkirk Gen- evieve Waters Lloyd Anderson and Virginia Patten. Keeping up the three year tradition of caps and gowns the graduation class donned their scholarly attire on May 28 the date of Com- mencement. On this never-to-be-forgotten day the usual scholarship and athletic awards were made by elected seniors, while the following six seniors gave short talks: Barbara Ward, Hel- yn Cogdill, Lore Newkirk, lean Millar, Wayne Peters, and Virginia Patten. Those who received merit plaques were Em- ma Lee Holden, Lois Guernsey, Dorothy Holt- tContinued on Page 14?
