alqfnqencfau Because there were only two returnrng letter men Farr and Moen the latter of whtch mrssed most of thrs year s competrtron due to an ap pendectomy and the call to sea by Uncle Sams navy whrch was answered by Glenn Allen last year s best track prospect thrs year s track team dld not brrng forth the vrctorres that usually belong to the Cub crnder stars Thrs dld not daunt Coach Harmon Colby how ever for the underclassmen that turned out showed great promlse for the future At the trme of golng to press the tracksters had met rn only three meets The Cubs were nosed out of hlgh place rn a meet wrth Ana cortes and LaConner and agarn w1th Mt Ver non In the f1rst meet the scores were Anacortes 52 LaConner 40 and Sedro Woolley 34 In the second meet Mt Vernon scored 82 pornts and Sedro Woolley 40 Other meets held on the local track were the Northwest Washmgton Invrta tronal Relay Carnrval Skag1t County Track and Freld Meet and Northwest Drstrrct Meet The greatest surprrse of the track season carne at the 1nter class meet when Don Ayers a freshman won the 440 yard dash Thrs IS the f1fSl trme a freshman has ever had h1s name engraved on the Bldgway Trophy The Junrors won the meet Outstandrng members of the track squad rn cluded Boss Farr captarn who partrcrpated rn the h1gh Jump lack Stewart the mrle Lloyd Anderson the half m1le Gerald Pells the hurdles and Manford Shroy the Javelln Fresh man boys Ayers Portras Crowder Schmrdt Comstock and other under classmen gave fans a promrse of good track 1n years to come alafifany Racqueii Twelve boys turned out for tennrs thrs year p actrcrng long hours after school The only match whrch had been played at the trrne of gorng to press was one w1th the Burlrngton Tlgers 1n whrch tne Cubs were nosed out by w1nn1ng one match to the Trgers three Each year Sedro Woolley tennls players play two matches each wrth Mount Vernon and Bur hngton At the end of the season a county tour nament IS held 1n wh1ch these schools part1c1 pate The annual tournament was held at Mt Vernon thls year Flrst and second place doubles and slngles wrnners of th1s tourney went to the drstrtct tournament at Belhngham Boys who at press trme appeared to be prob able letter wrnners mclude last years letter wrnners Bob Cook hm Humble and Olaf Aal gard Probable flrst year letter wrnners were Matthew Ieffrey Bay Aarestad and Norman Kappel The teams played as follows doubles Bob Cook and hm Humble Olaf Aalgard and Bay Aarestad slngles Norman Kappel and Mathew lcffrey Mr Tom Mullen was the Cub tennrs coach ,441 of seq :Mme Even though no smokers were held thrs year to strmulate rnterest th1rtyf1ve boys turned out for boxrng B1ll Mullen boxlng coach explarned that the schools that usually furnlsh the compe txtron Bothell Hoquram and Kelso lost many of therr frghters and wrshed to take a year 1n whrch to bulld up new teams Next year s sche dule of smokers wrll probably rnclude these schools As partrcrpatron rn two smokers 1S requlred for a letter and none were held no boys re cerved letters Those who would have fought IH nter school bouts were Paul Portras Drck Rmg house B1ll Adams lack Lewrs Vernon Slms Laverne Mrlls Bob Norrrs hm Moen and Don Rrnghouse Although Mrlls Norrrs Don Rlnghouse and Adams are berng graduated htgh hopes are held for the Cub pugrhsts next year Ourte a few promrslng boys from the freshman class hope to f1ll the vacancres left by these boys body burlders of sports grves boys self confr dence and makes them more dependent on themselves comments Coach Brll Mullen Jldmflkun Last years veterans and many new boys greeted Coach Blll Mullen when tne call was glven for baseball men thrs sprrng Among the lettermen returnrng were LaVerne Knowlton Nrles lordan Ioe McCal1b lack Herrrck Eldon Wolslegel and Verne Gee The boys maklng the team for the frrst trme thrb year were Car lyle Atterberry Bob Prgg Melvrn Lmdbloom Antone Radosevrch Don Davrs Owen Swanby Way ne Brshop and Wayne Peters Popular co captarns were LaVerne Knowlton and Eldon Wolslegel Gus Suryan was head manager Hugh Bldgway and hm Mosher assrstants As the seasons games were planned the Sedro-Woolley Cubs were to play two games each wrth Concrete Burhngton Anacortes Mt Vernon and Hamrlton As the Kumtux went to press only one practrce game had been played wrth Concrete Concrete scored 5 polnts whrle the Cubs chalked up 8 F our league games were also played The outcomes were as follows S W 5 Anacortes 0 S W 1 Mount Vernon 2 S W 10 Harnllton 6 S W 2 Burhngton 5 I i 1 1 1 A . The next two games proved to be a let down for last year's county champions since they lost both to a strong Lynden team. The last practice game found the Cubs trouncing the Hamilton Cougars by a score of 4l-26. The regular season started when the Mount Vernon Bulldogs journeyed to Woolley Decem- ber l9 for the first conference game. The Cubs were defeated by a 5-point margin leaving the score 25-30. The Cubs fell victim to the larger Anacortes Sea Hawks Ianuary 16 by a one-sided 31-13. The Cubs then journeyed over to Mount Vernon Ianuary 23 to square themselves with the Bulldogs but were again defeated by a five- point margin leaving the score 38-33. Verne Gee proved to be the mainstay of the team, scoring 21 points for the Cubs. 430 The next gam . was played at Edison Ianu- ary 30 and proved to be an upset when Edison outscored the Cubs to win 31-29. Rothausen and lordon accounted for 23 of Woolley s 29 points. The Burlington-Woolley game played Febru- ary 6 proved to be the highlight of the season with both teams playing spectacular ball. Woolley lost in the closing minutes by 33-32. The Cubs were still not to be denied in the county race when they upset the sharpshooting Concrete Cougars February l3 by a 45-26 score. ln the last game of the season the Cubs ree deemed themselves against the championship Anacortes Sea Hawks on their floor February 20 by a 42-34 count. Verne Gee Woolley s stellar guard was placed on the all-county team with Dave Roth- ausen making a reserve birth on the first all- county teann. Dick Ebeling a sophomore was given honorable mention. Woolley placed two men in the 10 top scores of the county, with Rothausen being tied for third and Verne Gee being tied for fourth.
