The trees hid the hybrid architecture, and the campus looked very beautiful, very large, and very aca- demic. We were impressed. We signed a hundred cards, and filled out a thousand blanks, and looked at a million happy, poised, glamorous faces. We felt small. There were no curtains in our windows. Why had we decided to be freshmen, anyway? We went to bed. And then it all changed. We knew everybody, and we did everything. We tried out for the Misc and the Chronicle at the same time, with the vague idea of getting scoops for both papers, and piling glory on our heads, we found that our boarding school French still worked pretty well, and that it was beyond human power to memorize the bones of the frog. The mysteries of the note topic were revealed to us, and we amassed thick stacks of notes, and thumbed through our already grubby Form Manual. It was wonderful. We could wear every day the lumberjack shirt we swiped from Brother when he went into the army. There was nobody to make us go to bed, and we soon split up into the ten-thirty and the two-thirty schools. We had a man at Yale, and a man in the army who got a ten day furlough in October, and another man in the navy. We had three big beer parties at the Dutch, and on Friday nights we stayed up until three hav- ing bull sessions with our roommate about Life. We were getting educated.
