N I, . f , Gig .ag f-? .s l Glkfs HE student should observe from the start that society as a whole is divided into four distinct classes, recognized by all except a few specialists. The first, the ancient nobility, because of their age and high standing are universally esteemed, and a few old traditions still exist which give them the precedence over the rest. It is with real regret that we see the present nobility on the eve of passing away. We may expect, however, that their places will be in a measure filled by the second, or leisure class, a free and careless order who have already advanced beyond the condition of grinding necessity which sternly oppresses the third, or laboring class, while even below these, at the minimum of subsistence, is a stratum which we may term the sub- merged tenth. A characteristic feature of this social organization in general is the opportunity given under the system for all to rise in time from thelowest estate to the highest, subject only to the mild operation of the law of the Survival of the Fittest. Another prin- ciple is the firm alliance between certain classes, the nobility con- stantly strengthens itself by contact with the laborers, while the leisure class concerns itself with the welfare of that unfortunate residuum, the submerged tenth. To all, however, the general social good is of greater importance than any class consciousness.
