For the aims and interests of our presiding genius are adequate reason for making our book, like the Frenchman in the Amazons, ,Rv 'ff ff? 5 lid. 5 English to ze backbone. Indeed, We con- sider the Vassar English Courses sufficiently stable and fundamental to provide backbone to an even more serious undertaking than ours. Further, they have proved peculiarly attractive to '99, largely on account of the head of the department. All her required courses We vvould gladly have elected, all her elective courses We required for our happiness. But, with all its Anglomaniac tendencies, you will recognize in our Vassarion the same prose and poetry, debate and romanticism, which has been existent since our College began. For, no matter how it is classified and subdivided, our annual must stand for, that which is most permanent and enduring in Vassar-her life and spirit. Preface
