I I We, the class of '51, dedicate our annual to Miss Gammell and Mrs. Metzenberg. As constant companions they have been both friend and advisor and have helped us through the obstacles We encountered in reaching for the height of successful accomplishment. We express thanks and appreciation to Mrs. Metzenberg Whose maternal care and helpful advice from the office have made our school days happier and complete. Our everlasting gratitude is extended to Miss Gamrnell who, through patience and understanding, helped us make a chronicle of our accomplishments in the publication of the 1951 Vashonian. i N ai ilnn-sun---Q -M-M Dear Diary U Today we made hydrogen in Chemistry and Coach was disappointed because it didn't blow up. ....,.-.....,....A .,,,.,, ,,.,,....,'.-ml. . . BENNEST Principal S . a Our diaries tell us where we have been and what we have done, the crystal ball looks into the future and tells us what is to come. If the future is as pleasant as the past has been I offer no complaint. All the past hasn't been the best, but even the worst has been good for me. It is fun to remin- isce and live over some of the outstanding events of the past, but to live in the past is an indication of old age. At the time of Writing, war clouds are hovering in the horizon which make the future none too bright. We are convinced that we live in the finest country on the faceof the earth, it is our duty to see that no over-zealous group of individuals take our inherent right of living a free and happy life from us to be ruled over by a powerful hand. Through education we prepare ourselves to cope with obstacles in a more intelligent manner, to shape our future, and make life more pleasant for ourselves and fellowman. As you pursue your education, may life become more abundant andhappy. P--'WWW High school graduates, in the past, have entered a world with fewer problems than those that confront the graduates of today. The chaotic conditions that are caused by the conflict of ideologies is full of challenge to youth, not only to help preserve our way of life, but to advance the ideas that will lead to the fulfillment of everyone's dream for a Good Life. Many who have gone before have sought the answers to these problems and others are still seeking them. As is true in a relay race, the baton is being passed on to you, to run your lap in the search for a happy world in which men can live at peace with one another and be free to live the kind of life he desires. The school has had a part in making possible a situ- ation where you could gain some contact with the recorded knowledge of the world and formulate your own reactions and philosophies. How much value you have carried out of the experience is probably directly proportional to the amount of participation you have put into it. You leave this phase in the process of your education with the best wishes of all those who have had any part in your school career. They charge you with the responsibility of making your life such that you will be able to write: Dear Diary. I have contributed something to my fellow man today. University of Oregon English. SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Dear Diary: ' y Our class entered Vashon High School on September 3, l9h7. Unlike more freshmen we were not confused, bewildered or the least bit puzzled by our surroundings. We were com- pletely at ease, so much so, in fact, that the upper class- men quite resented us. But this didn't bother us in the slightest either, for we knew that while all progressive in- stitutions are resented at first, eventually they will be applauded and approved by all. I ' Pete Hallberg, our class treasurer, was one of the most spectacular figures of that year. He was famous for his jitterbugging at the mixers and even got a write-up in the Hi-Jinx! quite an accomplishment for a fresh. when we returned the next year we were sophomores, and it was our turn to greet the frosh with an initiation, and greet them we did! That year we put on an initiation which will long be remembered in the anrmls of Vashon High. Not only was it the best, but the last as well, because for some reason all initiations were ruled out after ours. However, it was just as well, for the standard we had set up was un- surpassable. , r Then we entered our Junior year, and we were off on the hectic road of life the upper classmen must follow. There was always something to dot I ! , Our first undertaking was our Junior play. Mr. Lake, our director, selected NOut of the Frying Penn for us. This story is a farce which gets more and more complicated as it goes on, but somehow ends happily for all. Before we could hardly catch our breaths after the play we had to start planning our Prom: Suddenly we were faced with a million problems- But somehow we get everything un- der control and when the big night arrived everyone came to dance to music by the Esquires under shamrocks, shillelahs, and streamers of green. Then for the first and last time we were high school seniors, the mighty, the sophisticated, and the very 'busy seniors. Once again there was a play to give, a Ball to put on, officers to be elected, games to seeg and for the first time we would live out our last year, we would elect a Queen for Homecoming, we would put out an annual, and we would gra- duate 0 New all these things have come to pass, for the class which entered as frosh in l9h7 has gone on, and its memory lies only on your pages, Dear Diary. W I L L WE, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-one, being sound in our belief that you can't take it with you, do hereby leave this last will and testament: Mike Reilly leaves his broad shoulders to Dick Crane, just in case his muscle building course doesn't work. Virginia MacGregor leaves her quiet humor and inimitable mo- 'desty to Nancy Blair. Clarence Habbestad leaves stud hall, at last. Dan Folan leaves one unused comb to Jim Smith, who will pro- bably never use it either. Tom Smith, who knows his way around pretty well, leaves one map of how to get around the building between classes to the poor, bewildered frosh. Florence Phillips and Shirley Otsuka leave their secrets to anyone who is interested in them. Bob Therkleson leaves his model planes to the eighth graders to play with. ' Phil Gleb leaves Vanetta House nothing but blood, sweat, and tears. Bonnie Newby and Marion Erickson leave their absence records in the office where they hope no one will see them. Peggy Mackie, who has noticed that Mr. Ibsen seems to be running short of something, hair by hair, and wishes to help, leaves him one bottle of Kick-a-poo Indian Oil, which she developed in chemistry, and one billiard ball on which to test it. Don Raymond, who didn't take chemistry and has little faith in Peggy's Indian Oils but would like to do his bit for the cause, leaves to Mr. Ibsen his curly hair. ' Pete Hallberg leaves his profound humility and his inferior- ity complexes to any one who needs them. Robert Rowland leaves to Miss Gammell his Gutenberg's Kiddy Printing Press, which he used to counterfeit tickets during the past four years. . Bob White leaves his football helmet to Wayne House to use as a thinking cap d ring Coach's skull practices. Nancy Reed leaves all the worries of a weary prexy to next year's Girls' Club President. Trudy Harlowe leaves one lower locker filled with dead rats and other various and sundry items to the poor embar- rassed soul who gets it next year. Harold Armstrong leaves one slightly used trombone to poor Mr. Peterson in hopes that he can find someone who can get, if not music, at least the dents out of it. Nancy Dahlgren leaves a collection of doodling on the pages of the school books she has had over a period of four years to the future owners of these books. Ken Morehouse leaves a little peace of mind--Cto teachersl. Bonnie Bath leaves her ability to put the under classmen in their place fthe lowest spot you can think ofj to the class of '52. Marilyn Esterle leaves her headache powders, her ice bags, and her book, WHow To Relaxn, by E. Z. Dussit to next year's Hi-Jinx editor. Milton Kranjcevich leaves the many hours he has wasted ,in study hall to Father Time. Bernice Pedersen informs us that contrary to form and dis- pite all proverbs she is taking everything with her. The Senior Class of 'Sl leaves....... To the Juniors - one ten by twelve foot never laundered crying towel. To the Sophomores - that horrifying thriller, diller of all mysteries, NYou Too Can Possess Beautyu, by the an- thor, Ima Grucem, Jr. To the Freshman - one leather-bound volume of WYou Can Change the World,U by James Keller. Under the direction of Mr. Barton and Mr. Ostrom, Norman Stanley was elected class president, Jim Power, vice-president, and Joan Butterworth was secretary-trrasurer. After three weeks of waiting, the long anticipated ini- tiation night arrived and we appeared before our superior sophomore friends in burlap sacks, in proper orden,to become students of Vashon High. At last, though, the day of reck- oning came when we were allowed to give a return party at which we played a game of truth or consequences, the sopho- mores being the victims. As another year rolled around we readied ourselves for the sophomore year by electing Bob Nordby as president, Wayne House, vice-president, Maxine Langland, secretaryg and Bob Brenno, treasurer. Our class was represented that year in the letter club by Wayne House, Bob Brenno and Alex Kusulosg and in debate by Billie Wilbur, Vanetta House, Carolann Raymond, and Bob Nordby, who received a letter. Nancy Blair, Clara Jo Williams, and Jim Power were cho- sen as cheer leaders and did such an excellent job that the ASB re-elected them in their Junior year. At last we were upper classmen, and we went right to work on the job of being a very busy Junior class. we began work on our Junior Prom under the direction of Mr. Henriot. Our theme was a WNight in Shanghai,H and the success of our dance was evident by the unusually large attendance. Then before we knew it, it was time for the Junior Play More work, and more fun. We put on the production UBarkley Square,U which is a drama. The setting was the last of the 17th century in England, so, of course, the costuming held as intense an interest for the large crowd who attended the performance, as did the plot itself. Everyone agreed that it was a wonderful play to work with, and under the direc- tion of Mr. Lake we all had a great time with it. Remembering the fun enjoyed by all in our Junior year, we anxiously await what is in store for us as sophisticated Seniors next year. . 0 . SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY Like all freshmen we entered in September, a bewildered group, sixty strong. How misinformed we had been, though. we had thought at last we are in high school, we are brave, we are strong, we are intelligent, we are men and women. Oh how wrong we were! we were the despised, the inferior, the confused, the Wbabes in the woods.W One of the few things we did right in our first year, was to elect officers, but we probably wouldn't have done that right if someone hadn't told us how. Anyway we elected our officers and two student council representatives, and to keep from getting completely lost we had Mr. Martin and Mrs. Evans to advise us. For some strange, yet wonderful, reason all initiations were ruled out during our freshman year, so we escaped this horrifying experience. The sophomores did give a party and a dance for us, which turned out to be mostly party. We all got in the middle of the floor and sang songs and told stor- iesg more fun than dancing anyway. when our sophomore year came around we of course were much older and more dignified. So we started out by giving a dance for the frosh. Somehow it ended up and we all sat in the middle of the floor Once in awhile someone tried to dance, so we singing louder till they couldn't hear the fun all right. ' The boys in'our class, though not very quite a showing for themselves in sports. a party again, singing songs. just had to try music. Once more we tried to impress people with the idea that we really were grown upg wc planned a skating party. We all were going to go to Redondo and show everyone how indepen- dent we were. Then what do you suppose happened? Fate was against us I know, because the skating rink burned down. We were foiled again. We are, of course, still hopeful that we can overcome this jinx that ruins everything just when we are trying to act grownup. Maybe by the time we are Seniors we can find a way, in the mean time, though, we can have a lot of fun. this 'V Q L E K 1 X P I v S E F r i li. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTGRY Dear Diary: ' Looking back over my freshman year, the first of what, I am sure, will be four wonderful ones, I cannot help but think of my first day in Vashon High School. A gray day in early September it was, and what a day! We must have been quite a sight, all sixty of us wandering about the halls, confused, excited, and eager to get started on this great adventure, high school. We began, of course, by electing our class officers. These four able frosh were President, Warren Yeendg Vice- president, Charles Ingrahmg Secretary, Ruth Ann Armstrong, and Treasurer,' Eleanor Plancich. To advise us we had Mr. Lane, a kind and friendly adviser. Our class was very athletic minded. Eighteen of the freshmen girls turned out for Girls' Athletics. A good rep- resentation, I think. he were all very proud of Patty Svane when she made the first team in volley ball. Quite an ac- complishment for a frosh. Twelve boys from our class turned out for football, and two of them, Dick Princehouse and Bob Elmore, won their let- ters. with such a fine start our class should be able to add something to the future football teams. There were about eight boys turning out for basketball. Gary Karlberg and Bob Elmore were two frosh who made a fine showing in this sport. But not all of our class is brawng we have brainsVtoo. Just to prove it, six freshmen turned out for debate and did very well with it too. Our class has its share of beauty as well, for when the Homecoming Dance came along, Peggie Kirner was elected to be one of the princesses in the Queen's Court. - For one year we worked and played, enjoying both, and, to top it all off, we held a class picnic in the spring. UA good way to end the year, and make us look forward to anoth- er just like it. ? dau Uffdcma First row, left to right: Ruth Ann Armstrong, Secretaryg Eleanor Plancich, Treasurer. BONNIE RYAN, President IOERGEN SCHADE, Treasurer EIGHTH GRADE HISTORY We are a class with a complex. No one loves us or wants us around. They didn't want us in the grade school, so we tried to come to the high school. They let us in here, but I don't think they want us around either. They won't let us. eat with them so we have to have a separate lunch period. We have different classrooms, and different teachers. 'When they let us go to the ASB meetings we have to sit way up in the balcony and be so very good. And they still think we are in the way! The only ones who are nice to us are our teachers, Mrs. Constans and Mr. Childs, and even they work us to death on Arithmetic, Geography, History and Spelling. . Along with our regular classes, this year, we had first aid training, Mrs. Constans was our instructor. She showed us all about splints, artificial respiration, broken bones, and gave us all kinds of information that will help us know what to do in case of emergency. We all especially enjoyed bandaging each other. Maybe some of our bandages wouldn't have been much help to an injured person but we thought they looked just beautiful. The worst part is they treat us like children. Herewwe are, expected to act as dignified as high school students, and they treat us like we belong in a grade school. The only thing they have really let us do on our own is elect officers. The second week of school we did this, choosing Bonnie Ryan, President, Dick Haack, vice-president, Joergen Schade, secretary, John Leris, treasurer, and Sergeant at Arms, Florence Human. They wouldn't let us turn out for their sports, so when intramural basketball started we got our team together and I guess their consciences must have hurt them cause they let us take part. 'We didn't win all of our games, but just wait until next year! Then right in the middle of our first semester we heard some wonderful news. They were going to choose a princess from our class to be in the Queen's court during Homecoming. So we went to work to find two of our lovliest girls to be candidates. we finally picked two girls and on these two the whole student bod voted and Joan McLeod was the first eighth grade princess they have ever had for Homecoming. Although we couldn't take part in high school games, we had a casualty in sports. David Telvick was participating in that popular sport nnoon-time basketball,U a combination of football and basketball, when his arm was broken. This put him out of the game for a time, but he was back in again toward the end of the season. He was a fine player, and if letters were given out, Dave would surely receive one. When the second semester started we elected a brand new set of officers. The custom has been in the grade school to elect officers just once, but since the class here is twice as large we are electing them again. So we started out the second semester with Jeff Smith, Presidentg Eleanor Perkins vice-presidentg Maxine Beall, secretary, Frances Larsen, treasurer, and.Woody Hedman, Sergeant at Arms. One nice thing about our eighth grade is that we have a well filled social life. We had a Halloween party up at the high school gym one night, where we danced, played games, and had lots to eat. The party was such a success that we decided to do the same for Valentine's Day. Then in the spring we went on a picnic. we had a wild time swimming, boating, falling in the water, and eating. Besides having fun we did our good deeds too. In No- vember we bought two CARE packages and sent them overseas. We sent them just in time for Christmas, hoping that they would help to brighten the holidays for someone. They cost ten dollars each, and so to make up the difference in our treasury we went to work to think up ideas for making money. This was quite a problem at first, but since the year before we made quite a bit on a pie sale we held, we decided to try it again. The year before when we held the pie sale our class was able to make enough to buy a radio for the class. This year in high school we have made good use of it. We can proudly say that we are the only class who owns a radio. In future years we hope to get even more use from it. Now that I look back the year wasn't so bad. Sometimes we could 't help feeling sort of out of place, and from what I hear we have the same sort of treatment to go through in our frosh year, but if we can get through this we're read for anything and anyone, come what may. Dear Diary ' Today was campus day--everything was supposed to be clean after we got through. ' vi xwNwX XYN5XfixN5bbRQANYXQxxxNg X - f '51 ,hw Ai., , ik,F5'sLf .V-me W We J ' ti 2 Hman! Because of over-crowded conditions at the grade schools, the eighth graders moved to the high school, where they joined in with great enthu- siasm. Even though they were not members of the Student Bod officially, they were invited to all pep rallies, most assemblies, and dances which were held for the students dur- ing the year. On December 27, the looked-forward-to Homecoming Dance, reigned over by Phyllis Brown, was held. All that attended, from the eighth graders to the honored Alumni, assured us that it was the best so far. We agreed with them. At the beginning of the school year, our cheerleaders brought a new idea before the students for approval. It was received with enthusiasm by the coaches and students alike. So, on September 21, a parade marched smartly up the street of Vashon, complete with band, banners, football players, Pep Club girls, and lines of spirited students. Our first game with Bainbridge the next night was attended by many in- terested Islanders who saw the parade. This year, class sweaters were abolished in favor of a dark green all-school sweater, which the students could pur- chase any time during their years of High School. After it was discovered that the students seemed reluctant to do var- ious jobs around the campus without some kind of reward, the Student Council established a boys' service club. Two mem- bers from each of the five classes were elected by the coun- cil, and they drew up a constitution. The Annual Student Leader's Conference was held at the University of Washington again this year. The Student Coun- cil elected Nancy Reed, Mike Grant, and David Baldwin to represent us. They gained a great deal from their trip, especially concerning student participation in meetings, which seems to be a problem in most high schools throughout the state. Several amend ents, which received careful attention by the students, were adopted into the constitution. Needless to say, this year's Student Bod has been an extremely busy One o ,S.'z5.0' First row, left to right: Mike Grant, Vice-president: Vanetta House, Assistant Treasurer, Bob White, President: Nancy Dahlgren, Secretary, Phillip Gleb, Treasurer. GIRLS' CLUB Dear Diary: The 1950-Sl Girls' Club was handled very capably by the President, Nancy Reed. This year was the first time we have had Mrs. Evans for the adviser of our active club, and she did an excellent job. Our first project was to remodel the old locker room into a pleasant sickroom for the girls. The room was painted in peach and light brown, new bunks built into the corner, bright curtains and bedspreads, and a new venetion blind helped to make the room very attractive. The girls forgot themselves and turned their thoughts toward others by sending out six baskets of food to families on the island for Thanksgiving dinner and collecting books and magazines for the men overseas. At Christmastime, we brought cheer into the school with drawings on the black- boards and wreaths of holly and fir throughout the hall. The final and most important activity of this year was the Mothers' Tea. About three hundred mothers and friends were served tea, after which the girls modeled clothes amid a springtime setting. The afternoon ended with the instal- lation of the new officers for next year. . PEP CLUB Dear Diary: The Pep Club again this year did its part to give that nsomething extran to school athletics. Besides our regular actividesemf selling tickets at home games, decorating the goal posts, and making pom-poms, our group of fifteen girls took upon ourselves an additional project: namely, to put on a skit at each pep rally. These skits provided many hearty laughs for everyone. One of the skits which will be long remembered vividly portrayed a football player's week- end. Our annual Christmas party was held at the home of our adviser, Miss Gammell. The first thing on the agenda was a turkey dinner, followed by skits, songs, poems, and piano music performed by the girls. In November, we held a very successful pie sale. We also sponsored two dances in the spring, which were enjoyed by all those who attended. We went on our yearly week-end trip in May. The main business, the counting of the points to determine next year's members, was quickly taken care of, after which we spent an enjoyable week-end. We arrived home Sunday night with the usual sun- burns, sleepy eyes, and sore muscles. HONOR SOCIETY q Dear Diary: The Honor Society started the year with the addition of nine new Sophomores. Membership on our society is based on grade and activity points. A total of twenty-eight points is required for the Sophomoresg fifty-eight, for the Juniors, ninety, for the Seniors, and one hundred fourteen, for the wearers of the UTorch.N Our aim this year was to make our society more active and helpful around the school. An initiation was held for all the sophomore and junior members at the end of October. It was conducted in the man- ner of a night in the jungle, with the beat of the drum, the witch doctor, and the natives with their spears. Everyone enjoyed a good time, and especially the seniors. The honor pins were presented to the members of the so- ciety at an assembly in January. These pins are something to be proud of, because they are symbols of hard work and of real acheivement. Eleven Seniors earned their torch pins and the privilege of wearing the honor cords at, the com- mencement exercises. DEBATE Dear Diary: Resolved: WThat There Shall Be a Substantial Expansion of the Welfare State.W This topic was successfully debated by fourteen debaters this year. We debaters, with Mr. Ostrom as our adviser, use the three forms of debate: The Univer- sity, the cross-question, and the Lincoln Douglas styles., Our debate club, a member of the Puget Sound Debate League, debated with other members of the league, including Lake Washington, Stadium, Highline, Lincoln, Bellarmine, and Auburn High Schools. . Four of the debaters represented our school at the High School Student Congress held at Pacific Lutheran College in October. Bob Nordby took the third place cup, judged upon his contribution to the Congress. During March the debaters attended the two annual high- lights of debate. First they participated in the College of Puget Sound Debate Tournament, which consists of competitive debating. The second big event was the University of Wash- ington Speech Festival, comprised of problem solving debate. Music was supplied by the Bobcats, and entertainment included a stage show by the famous dancing girls, the UFour Roses and a Thorn.N The WRosesn were Bob White, Millard Gleb, Mike Grant, and Berton Anderson. The NThornU was Bob Brenno. Although the turnout at the dance was not too large, those who attended enjoyed themselves thoroughly. As is usual at the first of the year, the officers of the club met with their adviser, Coach Robinson, to draw up a cabinet consisting of two members from each class. This cabinet, which determines the policies of the club, met to discuss and decide on the agenda for each meeting throughout the year. . The custom of collecting food for Christmas baskets was continued this year. Four baskets were sent out along with clothing the toys for the children which were donated by the Girls' Club. The Boys' Club also worked in co-operation with the Girls' Club in collecting books and other reading material for the men overseas. - - Cn the whole the club's projects have been very satis- factory, and all the boys deserve a vote of thanks for the work they have done to make the year what it was. LETTERM N'S CLUB Dear Diary: 'The Lettermen's Club began the year by electing David Bal in as president. The membership of our club decreased som what from last year. The Juniors led the club with eight members, and the Seniors followed close with seven members. On September 15 our club sponsored a record dance after the football game which was very well attended. Several times during the year, the Lettermen's Club had short meetings and then went out on the lawn and picked up the wastepaper. Although we were small in number, we tried throughout the year to maintain a spirit of good sportsman- ship, which is needed in all types of work as well as in sports. MUSIC U FARTMENT Dear Diary: The Music Department, under the able and enthusiastic supervision of Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, completed an active and profitable year. We are proud of the progress ourschool has made in the field of music. In October we were happy to move into a larger and more convenient room, formerly the old shop. This move provided a place to keep the instruments, musical equipment, and a music library. The Music Appreciation Class, which origi- nated this year, also met there. The twenty-eight members of our band were given the chance to display their talent at the pep rallies, games, and.other school activities. At one of the pep rallies, they helped to teach us two new songs, the UPep Song,N and the UFight Song,N composed by our principal, Mr. Bennest. The thirty-one member chorus had a busy year. Besides participating on several programs, we sold Christmas cards, and sponsored a pie sale and a well remembered dance. The proceeds of these activities went to pay for the choir robes which arrived just after Christmas. There were three Glee Clubs this year. Twenty-five boys and thirty-five girls, mostly Freshmen, made up the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs. There was also the Eighth Grade Glee Club, consisting of thirty girls. The Girls' Octet was heard and enjoyed by many during the year. Nancy Dahlgren, Clara Jo Williams, second altosg Cherry Tabor, Pat Kennett, first altosg Alice Brammer, Judy Leise, second sopranos, and Marilyn Renter, Dolores Hamilton first sopranos made up this excellent girls' group. Another group was the Freshmen Boys' Quartette, which also acquired harmony that was much appreciated by all who heard them. The members were Dennis Reuter, first tenor, Stanley Faas, second tenor, Chuck Ingraham, first bass, and Warren Yeend, second bass. 'One of these music ensembles presented a number at each P. T. A. meeting to the enjoyment of all. The annual Christmas Program was the first highlight of the year. The scenes and music captured the audience with its beauty. The second was the Spring Concert, which is always looked forward to by the music lovers of the Island.. FIRST ROW. left to right: Harold Peterson, Director: Dolores Hamilton. Pal Kennett. Donald Lake and also a lot of work on the part of Mr. James Henriot, production manager, the Junior Class gave a sensa- tional performance of NBerkeley Square,W a three act drama, on December 8. . Peter Standish, who was living in the year of 1923, had been reading letters, books, and a diary of the year l78h. He decided that he would like to go back and relive the life of his great grandfather. The play then took you back to l78h and he relives the part, always making a slip in his speech by talking of the future. Then the play Tswitched back to 1928 with Standish realizing what he had done. Under the competent direction of Mr. and Mrs. Peterson, U1 Serenade of Carols,W including church music, folk songs, and composed music was presented by the Music Department .on December 19. The mixed chorus began the program by singing nThere is Joy for Every Agen as a processional, followed by several other numbers. The eighth grade girls sang WBring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabellau while five girls interpreted the song through a dance. The Girls' Glee Club sang among their numbers the French folk song WPat-a-Pan.W The fourth and seventh grades from the grade schools sang three songs from the balcony. Nancy Blair played the part of a sleepy girlg Jim Smith, as the Spirit of Christmas, answered her ques- tions about the carols. This year's annual Homecoming was held amid the .gala holiday season on December 27. Queen Phyllis Brown ruled over her court of five lovely princesses chosen by the stu- dent bod : Nancy Reed, Charlene Rodda, Freda Seltenreich, Peggy Kirner, and Joan McLeod. The gym was decorated in accord with a snow theme, and the crowd danced to the music of the Esquires. Under the capable direction of Mrs. Evans, the court enjoyed a dance performed by twenty-two students. The dance was so thoroughly enjoyed that the dancers gave an encore during the intermission. For the court entertainment Clara Jo Williams danced, accompanied by the Mesdames Peter- son and Bennest, and the Girls' Octet sang I'll be Home for Christmas.N Early in the spring, the Seniors got busy on their play nThe Youngestn by Phillip Barry. This three act comed was presented in the school auditorium on the evening of March 30 before a delighted audience. WThe Youngestn is the story of Richard, the youngest son of a well-to-do family, who wanted to be a writer. His family tried to force him to fit their way of life, this resulted in his crushed personality. When his older brother loses the family fortune, Richard comes into his own, and the story ends with unity in the family once more. After considerable discussion concerning the advisabil- ity of having the Polka Dot Revue, March 22 was set as the date for this lookedwforward-to prod ction. In connection with the Honeymoon Theme, various acts, characteristic of different countries throughout the world, were presented in penthouse style. In the spring, the entire Music Department presented a NFestival of American Mhsic.N' One of the highlights of the evening was the singing of Negro spirituals by the chorus. The Mothers' Tea was held this year on May 15. Last year's tea carried out a quilting bee theme. Beautiful old quilts, which were collected from all over the island, were hung on the walls. Pin cushions.with flowers in them were used as centerpieces on each table. After delicious refresh- ments, an appropriate program was given by the girls, in- cluding a scene of an old-fashioned quilting bee. I LIBRARY CLUB Dear Diary: UThe educated man is one who knows where to find what he does not know.0 A group of twelve student librarians, under the capable direction of Miss Ga mell, did their part to make our library a quiet and well organized place, so that we could find what we want to know, when we need it. As in the past two years, we set aside an hour each week for stud and research. we studied very thoroughly the Dewey Decimal System for library filing. We also spent time in selecting and cataloging new books, in mending old books, and in cheering up the library with flowers and various dis- plays. The week before Christmas, the library was attrac- tively decorated with a small Christmas tree with tiny gifts under it arousing our curiosity, red and white streamers, holly, and a wax angel display. Other activities of our club this year included a dance in February and a profitable field trip to the University of Washington Library. As a means of identification, we again purchased library pins in the form of an open book. AW Q 3 l 2 2 , s f FIRST ROW, lelf to right: Virginia MacGregor, Phyllis Brown, Iudy Leise, Bonnie Bath. 'fx 1950 BASEBALL On a beautiful spring day, with the turnout of twenty- five aspiring athletes, Vashon's baseball season got under way. By the end of April the team, under the coaching of WTexW Robinson, was molded into an outfit that, while not the strongest Vashon ever had, was one of which we need not be ashamed. For the first game of the season Vashon traveled to Mt. Si and came home on the short end of a 5 - 2 score. At that, however, Vashon made a respectable showing. Wayne House in his pitching debut struck out nine batters. Due to costly errors, three of Mt. Si's runs were unearned. In the second game Lakeside came to Vashon and smoth- ered pitchers Requa and Deakin under a barrage of hits and waltzed to victory to the tune of 13 - 5. In just about the most beautifully pitched game a -fan could see, a great Bothell team beat Vashon 13 - O. Fred Henniger, the Bothell pitcher, mowed down the Pirate batters without a hit. In fact, he only let two runners reach first base. Vashon, locking more like a baseball team in the next game, lost a close one to Foster, S-- 6. The outcome was in doubt until the final inning when Vashon got the tying run on third base but couldn't push it across. Wild pitching made the difference as Vashon outhit Foster. Determined to do something about their poor showing, the Pirates traveled to Overlake to do battle with the Wol- verines. The determination paid off. Ron Requa, Vashon'S pitcher, mowed down the Overlake batters, giving up just two base hits at a premium, Vashon was pounding four Wolverine pitchers for twelve hits and ten runs. Third baseman Don Raymond was the big gun for Vashon, collecting a triple and a home run. The home run carried over the Overlake school buildings on the fly. Vashon played well as a whole team. Besides shining on offense, the team defensively contributed two double plays and made other fine plays. The next week Vashon traveled to Tolt, confident of victory over the heretofore winless NDemons.n The Pirates were in for a rude awakening, however, when Tolt proceeded to walk off the turf with their first win of the season, h - 2. Vashon collected only one hit, a double by Reg Bath, but made the most of that hit as it figured in both Vashon I'U.IlSs The only bright spot in the game against Tahoma, which Vashon lost 8 - 3, was Bob Stead's mighty home run which carried to the edge of the playing field. The final game of the year was a desperately fought contest between Vashon and Issaquah. In the last half of the final frame the score was tied 3 - 3. Vashon almost won it when Vince Law walked and stole second, after which, Mike Reilly singled. Law was thrown out, however, on a close play at home. The game then went on for two extra innings before Issaquah finally pushed over two runs and had the ballgame 5 - 3. y While this year's baseball season was far from perfect, it will be remembered and appreciated as a great teacher of experience. Many of this year's team were inexperienced and the knowledge gained in fundamentals, and the experience of competition and team play will be invaluable next year and should go far in helping to create a better ball club. X ROBINSON FOOTBALL Football started at Vashon High with the return of nine lettermen to the gridiron, and with more than two dozen young hopefuls seeking the glory of their first letter. With a heavier than usual line and a backfield built around hard-charging Bob White, the Pirates looked forward to a good season. Added to their chances was the fact that besides head coach NTexW Robinson there were two assistant coaches: Line coach, Bob Childs, and coach of the back- field, Lew Morse. With these additions to the coaching staff the different sections of the team were able to get coached more thoroughly. The season officially got under way with a practice game against Bainbridge. When the final gun sounded, Vashon came out on the short end of a 6 - 0 score. The only score, which came as the result of a long, sleeper-pass play, was a heart-breaker as Vashon had played almost the entire game in Bainbridge territory, but just couldn't cross the goal line. The Pirates also outgained the Spartans and made ll first downs to 7 for the invaders. Vashon next travelled to Mt. Si where they lost to a strong Wildcat eleven by the rather lop-sided score of S9 - 6. Looking at the score a person might think that the en- tire team had completely fallen apart, but such was not the case. The Vashon weakness that lost the game for them was their inability to stop the end runs by two little scat- backs. 'Other than this Vashon did not look as bad as the score indicated. The Pirate offense, once it got rolling could not be stopped and had no trouble pushing over for a score. At Tolt the Pirates finally got into the win column by defeating a game, but outmanned, Tolt eleven by the score of 26 - 6. The fine passing of White and Reilly, the extra- ordinary pass-catching by big Wayne House, the hard running of White and Fuller, and the good all-around play of the Pirate line left no doubt in the minds of the fans after the first quarter of play what the final outcome of the game WO'llld be o ' The Pirates probably played their best game pf the year against Bellevue. The Wolverines just managed to pull a 12 - 6 victory out of the fire with a desperation fourth down pass late in the fourth quarter which clicked. Highlight of the game was a tremendous 60 yard run by Vashon's candidate for all-star honors, Bob White. The highlight, as far as Vashon was concerned, in the Foster game was a .sustained 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 i 1 1 Fv1.1-.ei, ,, , rl I E 1 E 7 5 3 r 7 . i F 1 V 7 r i r drive by the Pirates through the mud, culminated by Mike Reilly going over from the eleven yard line. In the remain- ing games the bright spot for Vashon was again Bob White who smashed through for Vashon's only touchdowns and whose fine running made him a member of the Lakeside League All-star second team. This year's football team with the experience gained through competition, team play, and sportsmanship on the gridiron have learned lessons which will last and be of val- ue throughout their lives. Forty players turned out under the watchful eye of coach WLewW Morse, who began his first season at Vashoni Morse is a graduate of the U. of Washington where he played on their championship basketball team. Using as a nucleous the two returning lettermen,, Phil Gleb and Wayne House, a basketball team was welded together by the beginning of December for the first practice game. Vashonfs somewhat inexperienced team didn't get rolling until near the end of the seasong several heartbreakers were lost by just a few points. Then the Yelm Tornadoes came to town to play the Pirates in the second game of a two game series. Vashon jumped into an early lead behind the shoot- ing of House and USamU Rowland. A desperate last half rally by Yelm was staved off by the Pirates and the game ended with Vashon the victor by the narrow margin of two points. The victory was made even sweeter by the fact that Yelm had beaten the Pirates in their previous meeting and had in the meantime taken over first place in their own league. Vashon won their next games against Tahoma and Tolt. Both were close games, the Pirates winning a thriller from Tahoma by only two points after pouring on a last quarter rally that the Bears just could 't stop. Bright spot of the season was the phenomenal scoring of WBig Waynem House who scored 30h points during the season. He captured Lakeside League scoring honors with 217 points for an average of 18 points per game. FRESHM I BASKETBALL This year for the first time the Lakeside League had a basketball schedule set up for Freshmen teams. Vashon entered a team coached by Mr. Childs, ' Freshmen basketball is a wonderful idea as it gives the Ykeshmen valuable playing experience which they wouldn't likely have otherwise. This is an important step toward better basketball teams in the future. BASKETBALL SCHEDULE DATE OPPONENT PLACE Dec. 1 Bainbridge there Dec. The work of the association was under the competent supervision of Miss Finney and Mrs. Evans. Interest in athletics ran high this year. we had an average attendance of fifty for each turnout. The girls participated in volleyball, basketball, badminton, volley- tennis, and baseball. There was a noticeable increase in skill in these sports after each season. In October and November, the volleyball tournament was played off. The Juniors won the championship, having won all their games. The Seniors came second, having won alltut one of their games. From all the girls that turned out, eight girls were chosen to make up the Vashon High School all-star volleyball team. The following girls were on the team: Bonnie Bath, Trudy Harlowe, Nancy Reed, Cherry Tabor, Patty Svane, Donna Stewart, Donna Svane, and Nancy Tjomsland. Early one Saturday morning in November, eleven of us traveled to Bellevue for our annual Playday. Such sports as volleyball, badminton, volley-tennis, basketball throws and baseball throws were enjoyed by the girls along with a lit- tle dancing. Nancy Dahlgren and Susan.Wadleigh were on the team which won first place, Nancy Tjomsland and Bonnie Bath were on the team that won third place. Other schools which were represented were: Bellevue, Tolt, Bothell, Foster, Lake Washington, and Mt. Si. A good time was enjoyed by all who attended the Playday. In February, we were invited to attend another Playday. Because we had enjoyed ourselves so thoroughly at our first one, we accepted this invitation with enthusiasm. We are glad to say that the aim of the association to develop a wholesome and diversified program of games and sports has been faithfully carried out. We are also proud of the spirit of good sportsmanship that has prevailed dur- ing the entire year. It is sincerely hoped that the work done in our association will have a high carry-over value and will make better citizens of each one of us. GIRLS' ATHLETIC LETTER CLUB Dear Diary: The 1950-Sl Girls' Athletic Letter Club, consisting of Juniors and Seniors, was very capably presided over by Nancy Tjomsland. Mrs. Evans proved again this year to be a very faithful adviser. In an attempt to build up our treasury, we took over the responsibility of the concessions at all home games. Miss Burrier volunteered to take over the never ending job of concession manager, and she worked with us to bring the greatest convenience to the people. With the twenty per cent of the net profits which we received for our services, letter club pins were purchased. The Girls' Athletic Letter Club is composed of girls who through the Girls' Athletic Association have received a letter. Earning a letter not only signifies achievementin Girls' Athletics but also in sportsmanship, health, class work, and leadership. The girls must earn a total of 325 points in one year to be eligible for a letter and to be a member of the Girls' Athletic Letter Club. The point system of the Bu A. A. is the basic form which the girls have followed. This entitles them to points not only for Physical Education class work but for participa- tion in extra-curricular activities. These fall into two classifications: organized and unorganized. The organized are those of the G..i. A:,' athletics.which are held once a week after school. They consist of games such as, volley ball, basketball, bad inton and baseball. Girls who make the first team of each of the preceding games receive So points. Management of the games and lockers also are cred- ited with points. The unorganized are those which the girls may do in their spare time such as, horseback riding, swim- ming, skiing, skating, bowling, etc. A girl may earn upt0'a total of lOO points for unorganized activities. ' Participation in athletics is not the only factor which determines points for letters. Sportsmanship is equally important and points are given in good sportsmanship in class, school and athletics. - This year, we have worked to maintain a spirit of good sportsmanship and co-operation in and about school and in every activity. This is the aim of our club. , 1 FIRST ROW, leit to right: Bonnie Bath, Donna Stewart, Secretary-Treasurer: Nancy Dahlgren, Virginia MacGregor.
