For many years it has been the thinking of Educators that the public need was best served by satisfying the academic needs of the individual. Increased requirements for graduation have lessened the field of electives for the High School Student. The premium on science, math- ematics and foreign languages as emphasized by Federal Matching Funds tended to spotlight these fields. They are further enhanced by Federal Aid for scholorships and research. We must assume that emphasis on these fields was necessary or this program would not have been inaugurated. I believe that we have had capable students in the past who had interest and abilities in these fields, but who were unable to pursue advanced training for economic reasons. The individual as well as society has suffered. These programs, we hope, will solve this problem. We should be cautious however that we do not encourage pupils into these fields who have neither the interest or the capacities required. I believe that our high schools should endeavor to maintain not only a properly balanced curriculum but one that will also help a pupil to discover and develop his greatest potential. Mr. R.G.
