But she soon learned that the hand of the teacher is intended to guide the enlightened, to encourage the hesitant, to rebuke the negligent, and to laud the successful. Now she expects that lift, that encouragement, yes-that rebuke and that praise. NEUHAUSER HATCHERIES, INC., CAREY, OHIO 5 X MY EDUCATIONAL CREED By F. V. Entering the north door and fol- lowing the older students to the upper floor, she tries to slip unnoticed into a back seat during roll call. After puzzling over her schedule, she heads for the first period class. Soon the unfamiliar muddle becomes a smooth routine and it is a common occur- rence to see Miss Van Lue going to class. THE CAREY TIMES. CAREY. OHIO 9 Seniala 61644 Gfficafi 61444 We have at last reached the goal for which we have been striving through our twelve years of school. We took our first step' toward the end of our school career in the fall of '43. Ieanne Waugh was our sponsor and officers were: President, Robert Fry, Vice President, Kent Dukes, Secretary-Treasurer, Helen Cole. We chose as our class colors-Red and Black, class flower-Red Rose, class motto- To- night we launch, where shall we anchor. We became Sophomores, with Rose Dehnhoff as our sponsor, and Presi- dent, Frances Marshall, Vice President, Donna Mae Miller, Secretary-Treas- urer, Edith Risner, Reporter, Ioann Patrick, as our councilmen. Our next step was taken into our Iunior year. We presented the Iunior play, Aunt Susie Shoots the Works , which proved to be a great success. Our next great success was the lunior-Senior Banquet. Under the super- vision of Virginia Reber and President, Edith Risner, Vice President, Claren Thomas, Secretary, Donna Mae Miller, Treasurer, Betty Sausser, Reporter, Rebecca Puckett, the Iunior year came to a glorious close. - We began our Senior year with Lorine Oman as our supervisor, President, Donald Broadwater, Vice President, Mary Louise King, Secretary-Treasurer, Betty Sausser, Reporter, Edith Risner. We presented the Senior play, The Ghost In The Belfry and published the Scarlet and Gray . Both were suc- cessful. We were the honored guests at the Iunior-Senior Banquet. Our school career was brought to a close with the Commencement exer- cises on May 17. We shall always remember the pleasant times we had at Vanlue. Donna Mae Miller, Class Historian. All the passengers, including myself, alighted. We were quite dizzy at first and had a difficult time getting our bearings. Then the great telescope, which we brought along to gaze at the earth, was rolled out and set up in the best location. When it finally came my turn to look through the telescope I had the thrill of my life. For I realized that I could not only look at the earth but I could locate my former classmates on the earth. . I turned the great lens until I could plainly see the little village of Vanlue. But to my great surprise it was no longer little, it had grown to be of con- siderable size. And there I found the first of my former classmates, Donna Mae Miller, now happily married to Charles Bibler. Charles is now the head manager of Hochstettler Grain CS Supply, which has grown to be a great international firm. And there I left them and upon further surveying the town I found Louise Shaffer who long since had become Mrs. Burdette Pratt. They were living in a beautiful apartment which Louise kept spotlessly clean de- spite the destruction of her three off-springs. Then I moved on to Chicago, Illinois, to find lean Coldren at Marshall Field in the interior decorating department. She has been very successful and has planned and decorated the homes of many famous people, including plans for the proposed new addition to the White House. I had been abroad for so many years studying music that I had lost all communcation with my good friend, Edith Risner. I began to search for her and located her in the great New York City, Where I tfound her working as one of the famous Powers models. I Watched her model a lovely evening gown and then moved on to Hollywood to visit Marcella Hendricks and Helen Cole, the head make-up artists at Warner Brothers. Then on to Texas to find Orville Cook busy at Work, branding Long Horn Cattle, and making a great success of ranching. I began to wonder what had become of Helen Mae Grant and upon turn- ing the lens a bit, I found her living in Norfolk, Virginia, in order that she might be near her husband, a captain in the Navy. I found Betty Sausser and Mary Louise King as private secretaries in Washington, D. C. And then turning back to Ohio, I found Donald Broadwater standing proudly in his field of 12-foot hybrid corn. Claren Thomas I found to be in his chosen occupa- tion that of a Successful Farmer. I located Raymond Walters in the Episco- palian parsonage studying his manuscript for Sunday's sermon. I took one last look through the telescope and moved on to make room for the next person. Frances Marshall. WAALAND'S GREENHOUSES. 140 LARKINS ST.. FINDLAY. WHAT THE IUNIORS HAVE ACHIEVED When we, twenty-one luniors, embarked upon our third year of high school, We realized that our road would at times be a trying and busy one, but we also realized that we would tinally reach the achievement we desired. With Donald Bechtel as president, Norma Schubert as vice-president, Doris lean Bayless as secretary-treasurer, and Ruth Tanner as reporter, We dili- gently began our task. While most of our lunior boys were fighting for Vanlue's honors in the football and basketball games, the ambitious girls sold pop corn and hot dogs to finance our class activities. ln the spring the class surprised the school and community by success- fully presenting the play, Her Emergency Husband. This required much of our time and effort, but we willingly devoted our talents to this event. Near the end oi the school year we treated the Seniors to a royal feast at the Iunior-Senior Banquet held at The Phoenix Hotel on May 8th. Miss Reber was our class sponsor for the year. We have truly appre- ciated her efforts to guide and better our class, EUGENE HENDRICKS, BUYER OF HAY, STRAW, WOOL, VANLUE. OHIO 17 if Sap Q TENTH GRADE First Row: Bonnie Crawford. Virginia Perkins. With Mrs. Peterman as our sponsor, we elected the following officers: Marjorie Barber, Presidentg Norman Pratt, Vice Presidentg Elmer Walter, Secre- tary-Treasurer. Determined to make a name for ourselves, we participated in football, bas- ketball and all other social activities oi the school. We proved our skill in salesmanship by operating the pop concession. This brought us many joys and sorrows, and a little cash. As we adjourn school for this term, we find we have learned and accom- plished much which will help us on the road ahead. On a sunny morning in early September, twenty-four verdant but earnest freshmen left the haven of elementary education and became students of secondary education at Vanlue High. We were cordially welcomed by upper classmen. The next few days were a period of confusion getting to and from classes. The halls echoed with Freshies , Greens , and so on. By the end of the first semester We were well accustomed to the ways and personnel of the school, and settled down to hard and earnest labor which leads to success. We did our bit for Vanlue High by taking an active part in all sports. For recreation we enjoyed a class party and were included in the l:'.F.A.-F.l-l.A. skating party. We showed what we could really do by winning the maga- zine sales contest. They have struggled through the year with 31 members, 6 of them being drum majorettes who have done an excellent job of twirling. They started the year in the old groove of squeaks and squawks, but now under the guidance and leadership of Mrs. Iames they have made a clear groove that is definitely smooth. To the great heartbreak ot all the members, they are losing four of the best players by graduation this year. Mrs. Iames has very promising players who will start in the band next year. Good luck, kids. Each home football game found our band entertaining the crowds with new parade stunts. Also at several basketball games they were tooting away. These marching maneuvers and the band's large musical repertoire repre- sented hours of drill under the direction of Mrs. Iames. ln order to improve the appearance of the band, Mrs. lames suggested that uniforms be purchased for them. The matter was presented to the P.T.A. and it was decided that they should help sponsor the project. S50 Was voted to be paid from the PTA. fund, and a canvass of every resident of the school district brought the total to 5550. ' The band members extend their sincerest thanks to everyone who con- tributed. GET IT AT THE S. G S. DRUG STORE. FINDLAY. Things begin to pop when Bill's fiancee, Audrey Hardwick, and her uncle arrive to spend the week end. Dot pretends to be the maid. Then Dot's fiancee comes and Bill has to pretend to be her husband, and Elberta Peach plays the chamber maid. Nicky's aunt come to town to see him and Nicky can't find Arlene, so he has Dot to pretend to be his wife. Each one thinks all the others are crazy and so aren't on speaking terms. Dee Barclay brings Dora Conroy, Rita Trask, and Penny Gifford as her attendants. Allen Newcomb comes as Eric's best man. When Iohn Dagmar, the minister, arrives, he tells them of the Phantom that roarns the old, deserted church, and they see the Phantom for themselves. Uriah Vinton, the town marshal of Badger's Bend, adds comedy to the mystery. Selma and Sadie Otis, a couple of old maids, are working with the Phantom, but their rhyming scheme fools everyone.
