None ever left him with pain in his heart. This can be said of himg none lived in dread of him. He scoffed at nobody just to be smart. None in vulgarity spoke in disparity, Calling' him names that We commonly hear. Nobody jeerezl at him! Nobody sneered at him. No one was worse off for having him near. Brave was the heart of himg kindness a part of him, True to his faith and his fellows he stayedg None could recall of him, traits that were small of him. None had been hurt by the blunders he made. This we can tell of him, all men thought well of him. Home goes his spirit now bearing no stain. This We can say of him over the clay of him, God will be proud to receive him again. -Edgar Guest Dedication to the School 'Twas in the year of twenty-three, Twenty-six tiny babies were we. And in that year a building grew, It was the schoolhouse of Vanlue. By twenty-nine the school had grown, And into the first grade we had flown. The first year was one of' trials and correction, Under the guiding hand of Miss Gillette's direction. In 35 we were half way through, And all the while the school grew. By 37 we ended our grade school career, Learning to fight and spread good cheer. As we grew up the school grew too, And by 41 we were through. The school continues to go on its way, Establishing knowledge and getting no pay. Now as we leave and seek our fame, We dedicate this book in the Vanlue name. We are doing what no other class can do. And now we shall say to Vanlue High Adieu. Senior Class of 41 Page three Page four film? With eager faces turned to mine They seek my helpg and there Mute before such utter trust I bow my head in silent prayer. II. E. Hinkle- Principal Lord, help me make this living clay Into works of art supreme- Being Wrought by patient toil As vital as the humble soil, And yet, in part, for beauty made. Let me not my trust betray As with this plastic mass from day to day I mold pulsing souls, And send them on life's complex Way. Twelve years of instruction which has helped us reach this goal. The first eight years of school were long and uneventful and at times very dull. The four years that We have been in high school seem almost too short but they are ones that we will always remember. In 1937 we started our high school career as forty-eight shy and rather inexper- ienced Freshmen. Mr. George Tuttle being our guide and counselor. Our class offi- cers were: President, Doris Hendricks, Vice President, Ruth Ellen Dulgarg Secretary- Treasurer, Robert Van Atta, Reporter, Ruth Marie Cupp. The next year we became Sophomores, being one step nearer to our goal. Our class of thirty-seven members elected Reva Thompson, as President, Virginia Shuck, Vice President, and Ruth Marie Cupp, Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Tuttle was our sponsor. In the fall of '39 we entered our Junior Year with thirty members. This year and then we presented our class officers were: President, Gerald Ruth Dulgarg Treasurer, Belva We felt very dignified for we chose our class rings play, Gay , which was a real success. Our class Cotter, Vice President, Virginia Shuck, Secretary, Crawford, and Reporter, Pauline Kauffman. In the spring we gave the Seniors a real send off by being their hosts at the annual Junior and Senior banquet. Miss Ethel Baum was our adviser. In the fall of '40 we entered our Senior year. With twenty-eight members answering the call to continue . This was the climax of our school career and we all enjoyed our Senior year the best of all. During the year, Paul Rice, our all- around athlete, Darrold England, and Jean Helfer left us. A highlight of our Senior year was our class play, Pigtails , which was acclaimed a great success. Our high school careers were ended with the Commencement on May 19. Our Senior class officers were: President, Helen Beck, Vice President, Cosmo Plottsg Secretary, Dortha Parrish, Treasurer, Belva Crawford, and Reporter, Juanita Hendricks. Mr. Hinkle was our advisor. As it has always been my ambition to be an aviator, I climbed into my little plane and started on my journey to find my class- mates in that new era. As I landed at Wrights' Field at Dayton, I saw none other than John Cole who was at this time the manager of the field. Another plane landed at the field, and out stepped Marjorie Thomas, head Stewardess. While talking with Miss Thomas I learned that among her passengers were Belva Crawford and Bebe Thomas who were employed as stenographers in Chicago. After visiting there a few hours I decided to be on my way. While seated in my plane I turned on the radio and whom do you suppose I heard. The program was being announced by Lawrence Bright and he introduced the world's greatest opera singer, Juanita Hile. At the close of the program I heard one of the outstanding Woman commentators, Ruth Ellen Dulgar, reporting current news flashes. I made my next stop at Findlay, Ohio. Here I found Margaret Phillips as Editor of a Findlay paper. Bradie Marshall was employed as cartoonist for the same paper. I left the paper office and proceeded down the streets of Findlay. As I was walking along I came upon Mrs. Dale Leichty, the former Miss Doris Hendricks. I asked her concerning several of my classmates. She informed me that Mrs. Lynn Stillberger, the former Miss Reva Thompson, was a resident of Findlay and that Dortha Parish Was employed at office work in Indiana. Again I entered my airplane, and journeyed to my home town Vanlue. It was one of the greatest industrial centers of the world. Here I found Cosmo Plotts' as President of Vanlue University. While talking with Cosmo, in walked Robert King, head of the Vocational Agriculture Department. As I was leaving I met John Loudenslager, Director of Physical Education there. John informed me that a number of my classmates were employed at the university. They were Donna Thomas, Florence Fry, and Luella Walter who were working in the dormitories. Virginia Shucl: was employed as Commercial teacher while Pauline Kauffman was teaching Home Economics. After leaving the college and strolling down the Main street of Vanlue I met Mrs. Donnell Hendricks, the former Miss Ruth Cupp. She told me that Robert Shuck owned a prosperous farm south of town. I also found out that Mrs. John Gill, the former Miss Helen Beck was living in Illinois where he husband was head of the Air Forces. Mrs. Virgil Keiffer, the former Miss Betty Beck resided at Fostoria where her husband was employed. After having seen all my classmates it made me a little homesick for my good old school days but I ascended into my plane and was on my way. Juanita Hendricks Page fifteen Page sixteen enior Class We, the Senior Class of 1941 of Vanlue High School, realizing that our school days are drawing to a close, do hereby make and publish this, our last will and testament. The two groups, you see, are very outstanding, They teach the girls home making, and the boys farm handling. On October twenty-fifth the auditorium was crowded, To witness a play that with mystery was shrouded. Did you ever hear of a headless phantom? Well, this play had one and it surely did fan' em. The action took place on a stormy night, The living room of Hobgoblin House was filled with fright. At nine in the evening the action began, Darius Krupp was a sinister old man. Ten other characters furthered the plot, With comedy addedg it pleased a lot. For just a beginning the best was given, By this production the F. H. A. and the F. F. A. have risen. Just in closing we wish to express, In plays they will always give us the best. Page thirty-three VANLU SOARING f QQ. ALQNG thirty-fouxr 94 I Sept. Sept. Oct. Oct. Oct. Oct. Oct. N ov.
