Success is our goal and it can be attained only after thor- ough preparation. Years ago a group of educators stated what they considered to be the main objectives of schools. These are, name- ly: health, command of fundamental processes, worthy home member- ship, vocation, citizenship, worthy use of leisure time, and char- acter. It is easy to see that the first six objectives depend upon the seventh, character. People never inherit education. Each one must learn for him- self, learn how to use what he knows to the best advantage. Our success will depend on miat we can do with what we know and not on how much We know. Of course everyone should possess the com- mon essential Ntoolsn of learning, the three R's, Writing, read- ing and arithmetic. To have worthy home membership our relationship in the home should be cooperative, friendly, and helpful. We should realize that our parents are making a sacrifice in order that we may se- cure an education and make good use of our opportunities. Our school has been fortunate in havina a corps of teachers entirely worthy of membership in the finest homes in the community. Worthy use of leisure time is an objective. Throughout the years, man has been working towards present day civilization. Leisure was not a problemg it was a dream, a hope. The few who amassed fortunes and found it possible to have leisure time were the source of envy to others. Today, leisure is a problem. The unwise use of leisure time is as serious as the unwise use of Wealth. We have a wide variety of activities that may carry over into leisure time activities. Development of hobbies, recreation in the forms of games and athletics, dramatics, handicraft, nature study, art, music, and reading are all opportunities for spending one's leisure time. Our teachers have sought to train us in citizenship so that we may become intelligent voters and participate in political thinking, so that our minds will be well equipped to assume the responsibilities of community life. We are to be the leaders of tomorrow. One should choose his own vocation, but he should have the guidance and cooperation of parents and teachers in developing the things in which he is interested, and for which he has a nat- ural talent. Girls have a place in every Kind of work, althoufh they have had to battle for this place. Every girl and boy should have the opportunity to think for himself, plan for himself, and decide for himself. Then a person in unable to do so, he is not fully qualified to meet life's problems. Valedictorian Vary Lou Roberts 16 Eeuctmonfxl ,l,ewu-mxczfs Parents, Teachers, and Friends: On behalf of the Senior Class of 1937, I wish to welcome you to our Commencement, the last stepping stone in our high school life. However, it marks the first stepping stone of our real life activities. Long will we remember the days we spent at Vanlue High. We have looked forward to this day when we will have finished our course, sig- nifying that another milestone has been passed. Before many months go by, we will be looking back on these days, wondering why we did not make greater use of the opportunitiesiniich have been made available by you, the tax-payers of this community. One of the best ooportunities was that of gaining an educ- ation. We pass this way but once, and if we do not make the best of what is put before us, we cannot go back and pick it up to do it better. In Lincoln's day there were very few schools, and one had to become educated in the hard school of experience. Lincoln had little more than a year's actual schooling, yet he became the Great Emancipator and was loved by all who knew him. Our parents did not have the onportunities of seeurinn the type of training that we now have. The little one room schools were very popular and served their purpose well. One teacher taught all the nrades. If the children more needed at home they did not attend school. Many times the boys attended only the Win ter session, which consisted of three or four months. If they wished to enter high school they had to make great individual sac rifices. Let us now look at the present system of education. We have a modern school building. we have teachers who are specialists in their fields, with a variety of courses which meet the needs of every vocation and avocation. We are given a chance to deve- lop latent talents which we possess. We have been preparing to meet challenges, some of which are: illiteracy, industrial pro- blems, indifference morally and socially, government, and world peace. If you, our narents, had not had this foresight, we might not have had these opportunities. You have made it possible, by your sacrifices, for us to have this modern school system instead of one less adequate. For these things, we are indeed grateful. Our system of education has greatly improved in the last cen tury but there is still room for more progress. It will be grad- uating classes such as ours, that will aid in brineina these im- provements about, and it is hoped that, for the benefit of nost- erity, the system of education improves as greatly in the future as it has over the system of the nest. The first eight years seemed rather long and uneventful, but the four years of high school passed altogether too rapidly. It hardly seems possible that we are not to return to high school again next fall. In the fell of 1955 we entered the Venlue High School as c group of thirty-three Ngreenn and inexperienced Freshmen. The class elected Earlene Risner as presidentg Esther Knight, vice president, Joseph Saltzman, secretary-treasurer, and Nr. Mohr as class sponsor. In our Freshman year we had several successful class parties. By the end of the year we had become well ac- quainted with high school life. In the fell of 1934 we furthered our march toward our goal by one step by commencing our Sophomore year. At this time we hed e class roll or thirty-one. That yenr the class elected Harold Redick, presidentg Esther Knight, vice presidentg Willis Walters, secretary-treasurer, and Miss Dicus as class Our biggest event during the year was the high school In the fall of 1935 we crossed the half why mark through high school by becoming the Junior Class. In year we had an enrollment of twenty-nine students. H wus elected presidentg Violet McCormick, vice preside rw LL I1 sponsor. party. of our trip our Junior rold Redick tg DOHCIG Lee, secretory-treesurerg Clare Russell, class reporter, end Mr. Cribley, class sponsor. That year our big event vas the Junior play, WAnd Mary Didn, which was very successful. Also, we were in charge of the Junior-Senior Banquet and looked forward to the next year when ue too, should be honored with a banquet. In September 1936, becoming Seniors, we entered the home stretch of our merch to success. We commenced Tith twenty-eight members but this number was reduced to twenty-five. Class office acre as follows: Harold Redick, presidentg Kenneth Richards, vice presidentg Doneld Lee, secretary-treasurer, Clare Russell, class reporter, and Nr. Cribley and Mr. Ven Atta class sponsors. Our high school career will terminate at the Commencement Exercises on 20: We, the Senior Class of 1957, went to thank Niss Dicus, who rmide it possible to publish this annual, and to the other members of the Faculty who have given their time and pxtience to instruct us during our high school years. I was very fortunate in having a modern aeroplane. -It seemr ed that I its taking a trip. I landed first in a large city which I recognized as the former village of Vanlue. Sonn I heard the sound of a band ap- proaching. Pushing my way to the front of the gathering crowd, I recognized the drum major as none other than Joseph Saltzman. At his-site marched two flag bearers, Kermit Casteel and Robert Newcomer. Leaving Vfnlue, I journeyed to Carey, which had grown to be an important railroad center. I visited their large university and found the President to be Harold Redick. He introduced his secretary, Mary Sloan Miller. Conversing with the president, I learned that Kenneth Richards vas the coach of their champion- ship football tean and thit the referees were Leroy Thompson and 9 Yillis Walters. I He then invited me to visit classes. First was the short- hand class taught by Clara Russell, who had celebrated her twen- ty-second birthday only seventeen times. I went on to geometry class where I found Virginia Van Horn as teacher. In another room, I found the orchestra, the instruc- tor being Richard Clarkg the pianist, Reva Gamberlingg and violin- ist nas Donald Lee. Again in my plane to continue my trip to Iashington D.C., I tuned in on station TIL'and listened to the great opera singer, Esther Ellen Beck. ' Arriving in 'ashington I went immediately to the Captial, where I found Mary Lou Roberts, the Presidentfs secretary. Of course, me had a chat about old times. She mentioned the fact ' that Clair McKee was the he.d typist and held the norld's record, and that Earl Roller vas the Secretary of Agriculture. Esther Knight was becoming world famous as a movie star. I also was told by Miss Roberts where to find another one of my class mates, Audra Thomas Busard, who after Corlesponding found it better to fly to France, where she chose Maurice. Lerving the ccpitel I attended a near-by circus. As I entered the grounds, I emmediatcly recognized the ticket lady as Gertrude Loader. She told me that she had worked for this circus for five years, and that she had received her position through the assistfnce of Pauline Fry, the is non famous and plays and impor- tant part in to-days circus. After leaving the circus I strolled down Main Street. Notic- ing an attractive sign, I paused a moment to read, WPrincess Beauty Shoppe,N I found Jessie busy narcelling a very popular lady's hair. The lady's name I could not recall-sthe name comes to my mind--Mildred Thonrs. Mildred had married f wealthy New York Merchant. Returning hone, I noticed a lrrge sign, WNutter Holstein Dairy Farm.n Richard was succeeding very well. Again on the plane I was startled by a mouse. I guess I must have screamed for I awoke and there inds my story. 'A By Helen Peternan. 22 -cb: .J-rA--- . Early in the season very lettle time was spent on fundamentals, team play being the main cry of the coach. However, after the Salem and Wharton games, the fol- lowing fundamentals were stressed: passing, footwork, basket shooting, and more team play. The boys developed rapidly into a fast, clever-passing, dead shot, and fighting team. It hes been said, WA good offense is e good defense. Our squad proved this, in that we scored, throughout the league games thirty and five tenths points, to our opponents twenty one and six tenths points per game. One of the high points of the season was the trip to Bowling Green, when the prospective team attended nChuckW Taylor's basketball clinic. Another high spot of the sea- son wes the double defeat of Mt. Blanchard on successive week ends after Blanchard had thoroughly Wspenkedn us on New Years night, to the tune ef 54 to 14. Still another high point was the fete of holding Hanson to 27 to 21 score, after we lost Kenneth Rich- ards and Harold Redick, by the personal foul route in the county tournament. By defenting Arlington 40 to 50 in the semi-finals of the county tournament, we qualified, es one of the two teams, to represent the nLittle Ninen in the sectional tournament held at Carey, Ohio. On March fourth Vanlue created the outstanding upset of the sectional tournament by defeating St. Wendelin 24 to 17. On the following Saturday evening, we met Holmes Liberty and were defea- ted in an overtime period, 25 to 27. Thus ended what is consi- dered es one of the most successful seasons in the history of this school. ' Kenneth Richards, honorary captain end a stellar forward, and Harold Redick, defensive center vill be lost to the team by graduation. The program for boys consisted of horseshoe, volley ball, touch football, and soft ball. The outstanding games in both basketball and soft ball were played by the Junior High School boys. Volley ball was star- ted in February, l956, and received with a greet deal of enthu- siasm. The program for the girls consisted of basketball, volley ball, and soft ball. Soft Ball Due to the organization of softball in the NLitt1e Nine' Vanlue organized a soft ball team on April l, 1936. The follow- ing boys reported for the squad: Richard Nutter, David Cole, Lowell Shuck, Willis Walters, Dean Thomas, Richard Hendricks, ' Donald Hendricks, Kenneth Richards, Robert Robinson, Harold Fry, Jack Miller, Richard Clark, Ralph Cravens, Earl Roller, Edwin Wise, and Archie Cole. Only four games were played by Vanlue because of the eight month term and the cold weather. The first game was played at Mt. Blanchard, and Vanlue was defeated 16 to 6. The second game was played with Arcadia at Vanlue, the visitors winning 5 to 2. The third game was played with Arlington at Arlington, and the score was in Vanlue's favor, being 8-7. The Fourth and last game was played with Mt. Cory at Vanlue, and Vanlue won 6-5. W . Baseball of 1957 Because of nation wide interest in baseball we feel that we should play the All-American game. Keeping this in mind, we organized for the first time a baseball nine. Due to the fact that there is no WLittle Ninen league, Vanlue will meet Mt. Blanchard, Arcadia, Carey, and Arlington.
