'-5- ' V 1. 1 'if I N k 1 V , f V F' 2 N!-!gL- ' ' x Southern California College was founded in 1920 in Los Angeles by Reverand and Mrs. H. K. Needham as a training institution for the ministry only. By 1939, the school qualified as an institution of college rating according to California State Law, thus being recognized as a degree-granting institution. The degrees of , Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Sacred Music were offered. In 1940, the College Corporation Was reorganized and the College became an integral part of the Southern California District of the Assemblies of God. The College became a charter member of the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges, a national and professional accrediting body, in 1947. The inclusion of major programs of study in liberal arts was commenced in 1950. On janu- ary 6, l964, Southern California College was accredited by and became a member of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, the regional accrediting body for liberal arts colleges in California. The College is the first regionally accredited four-year liberal arts college in the Assemblies of God. The enrollment of Southern California College has climbed from 30 to 503 in forty-seven years of existence. The physical features of the College have been altered on a number of occasions, the most recent additions being a seven-story Men's Residence, a Dining Commons, and an addition to the Science Complex. The faculty force has been strength- ened to include nine members who hold the doctorate and six who are either doctoral candidates or in a doctoral program. It called for a thirty-five acre campus to accommodate up to 1, OOO students with adequacy. The implementa tion of the College Master Plan is being realized practically on schedule. As a church-related institution, we reserve the right and privilege to use the Christian resources and to affirm the Christian commitment. We imply op- portunities for religious decision, for worship, and for involvement in Christian activities as a part of the learning process. We are proud of our identification as a Christian educational center, encouraging an affirmation of Christian commitment and providing an impetus for the use of Christian educational resources. The Campus is located seven miles southwest of Santa Ana on Highway 55 in the City of Costa Mesa. Two miles away is the famous boating center of Southern California, Newport Beach and Lido Isle. Nearby towering mountain peaks and lakes complete the idyllic surroundings. Being located in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles, students can avail themselves of the libraries, museums, and cultural events for which the city is famous. just minutes from the Campus are miles of beautiful ocean, and nearby are the famous tourist attractions of Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm. Costa Mesa itself enjoys an ideal climate. Free of smog, its winters are tempered by ocean currents, and its summers are air-conditioned by cool trade winds from the ocean. Like Heroclitus, a naturalist believes everything changes whether they be things, people, governments, or whatever.. But the evangelical believer holds that there are some basic realities which never change. In this day of scientific and technological change, so many wonder if there are any absolutes on which one can stand. A scientific revolution is taking place according to one writer, which makes the seven wonders of yesterday look like the seven ho-hums of the world. As a conse- quence of this seething change, one may wonder if there are fixities to which one can anchor. We believe there are. The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews writes, jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. g and Malachi of old, l am the Lord, I change not. The balance between the absolute and the relative is beautifully expressed by john Henry New- man, Change and decay in all around I seeg O Thou who changest now, Abide with me. At Southern California College we attempt to adjust the curricular and extracurricular to the day in which we live, while the great commitments of Christian faith and faithfulness are held to be age abiding. We believe that the truth of God should be made relevant to the world as it is to- day. But this relevancy does not involve its repudiation. The terms in which truth is expressed may be changed, the truth itself, in fact, can never change. The education furnished to students at Southern California College is designed to be thoroughly Christian both in content and in intent. Education is not an end in itself. As a denomination, our foundation lies on the doctrine of the inspired Word of God. As a College, our foundation is the Southern California District Council of the Assem- blies of God. Southern California College is grateful to the Assemblies of God Churches and the District Council for their spiritual and financial support, and for the personal interest that has sustained it from its beginning in 1920 to the present time. The Christian message to the World must be fervent if it is to be effective in fulfilling its pur- pose. Some denominations, missionary societies, and theological colleges, as well as innum- erable individuals, realize that the best intellectual and socializing activities can never be substitutes for regenerating power and saving grace. This is the challenge to students and graduates of Southern California College. This is the Gospel's answer to the youth of today. Our generation has witnessed youth's demand for freedom and the fact that they are securing what they demand, but now, becoming tired of this long coveted liberty, they are asking, What next? Let the students of SCC size this situation up and, by radiant witness, lead a multitude into the freedom which is bondage to jesus Christ. The weight of responsibility which falls to you need not create anxiety and defeatism. A quick look behind at the maze of difficulties through which the Spirit has safely guided you is cause for much rejoicing and we repeat I Samuel 7:12 with no small satisfaction, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us The word hitherto causes us to remember past mercies, but it also points for- ward. When a man gets up to a certain mark and writes hitherto , he is not yet at the end, there are still distances to be traversed, more struggles, more joys, more temptations, more prayers, more answers, more fights, more victories. The graduating class will realize before long that the achievement of their final year, though noteworthy, will' probably be only the intro- duction to a succession of achievements . These will not all be academic of course, but their attainment will deposit in the bank of memories all the accrued interest that is guaranteed when we trust God for our lives .
