FURE GRD The Spectator presents its Anniversary Number marking twenty years of recording Vandergrift High School's personnel and activi- ties. In 1917 a group of enterprising students published a small mimeographed pamphlet called The Gaseous Ozone, which may be liberally translated to mean Hot Air. It contained personal items, activities, and humorous articles about students and faculty and was read with delight by the students. In 1918 the teachers noted the enterprise and originality of the authors and, being good educators believing in encouragement of student interest, organized an official high school publication which bore the honored and dignified name of The Spectator. This was a literary magazine which gave recognition to student creative writing. It began as a monthly publication, then gradually the number of issues diminished to four during the school year. In its second year of existence, pictures were added, particu- Iarly, in 1919, those of activities of the graduating class. Until 1926, this policy of literary, humorous, and photographic combina- tions continued. ln the fall of 1926, it was decided to concentrate materials into one issue, that issue to be a permanent record of the entire school's activities and interests for the school year. An outstanding feature of that first annual was a record of all Alumni from the first year Vandergrift held a Commencement--1908, including the class of 1927. Since then The Spectator has striven to fulfill the ideals set by these Vandergrift High School students of years past, whose annuals have been a pictorial record of priceless school days. May the 1947 Spectator bring to you, too, the remembrance of tears and happiness, as those issues of the past have done for others. -The Staff Spectator - 6
