LIEUTENANT MANN A. SHOFFNER iii, usN ifc ADVISOR LT Shoffner was born in Newport, Arkansas. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1971 with a BS, he served aboard the USS INTREPID iCVS-11j as a Deck Division Officer until December of that year. ln from january, .1972 until August, he attended flight school and was then assigned to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron Two CVO-Qj in Rota, Spain where he served as an Electronic Warfare Evaluator and Legal Officer. LT Shoffner is now a 1!C instructor here at Vanderbilt and is working on his Master's degree in Engineering Management. He and his wife, Sandy, have two children, joey and Lori Ann. 1 LIEUTENANT IAMES L. CHARLES, USN 2 tl ADVISOR l.ieuten,int Clharles, .i Detroit, Michigan native, is an alumnus ot the NROTC program at Vanderbilt. He graduated in 1973 with a Political Science major and related work in Economics. His first three years of a active duty were spent aboard the USS VESOLE CDD 878j. From 1973 to 1975 he served as Communications Officer and CMS Custodian but was best known to the crew as Postal Officer iof coursej. ln 1975, he assumed the duties of Navigator and 3M Coordinator, LT Charles' activities at the Unit are varied: he is the junior class advisor, Band advisor, and Recruiting Officer. His naval philosophy: When you are out of FRAMS you're out of cans. His wife, Melissa Gray Charles, is from Winchester, Tennessee.

LIEUTENANT COLONEL HENRY L. SEARLE, USMC EXECUTIVE OFFICER Lieutenant Colonel Searle was commissioned in 1956 as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation from the University of Washington with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. At the university he was a Scholarship NROTC student. After attending the Basic School and earning his wings, LT Searle served with VMA 121 in California, the Far East, and aboard the USS TICONDEROGA, and USS CORAL SEA. Following a tour with the First Marine Brigade at Kaneohe, he earned the degree of Aeronautical Engineer at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, California. His graduation in 1966 at Monterey was followed by a tour with MAG 12 at Chu Lai, RVN from which he reported to Naval Air Systems Command, Washington, D.C. as Engineering Project Officer for Transport and Observation Aircraft. In 1970 and 1971 he served with the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam in Saigon as an Operations Staff Officer. From that tour he reported to Yuma, Arizona where he was promoted to his present rank and where he served as Executive Ofhcer and Commanding Officer of both VMT103 and VMT102 and as Executive Officer of MCCRTG 10. He is married to the former Barbara Louise Brown of Yakima, Washington. They have two daughters and three sons, the oldest, Sheldon, is an NROTC student at MIT, and Kathryn is a member of the Unit at Vanderbilt. CAPTAIN EMIL R BEDARD USMC MARINE OFFICER INSTRUCTOR Captain Bedard is of the Work Hard - Play Hard school of Marines. His presence has enlivened, at various times and for various reasons, such diverse events as the Fall Picnic, Mess Night, and Thursday drill sessions. And if you don't like PT, the Captain would be more than happy to help you learn to love 3 mile runs. CAPT Bedard was born in Crookston, Minnesota, and holds a B.S. from Mayville iNorth Dakotai State College, and an M.S. from the University of North Dakota. His record of service is varied: upon completion of OCS and the Basic School at Ouantico he spent a year in Vietnam as a Platoon Commander, a Company XO, an Aide-de-Camp, and an Aerial Observer. ln 1969 he returned to Quantico as a Platoon Commander. He then spent 2 years l71-731 at Fort Huachuca, Arizona serving as a Formal Schools Instructor. A student again, the Captain completed the Advanced Infantry Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, as well as the Airborne School and Nuclear Weapons School. ln 1975 CAPT Bedard reported to Okinawa for duty as Parachute Officer and Company Commander in the 3rd Marine Division. He arrived at Vanderbilt in 1976 and is Battalion Advisor, Drill Team and Color Guard Advisor, Athletic Officer, and Unit football coach in addition to his primary duties as MOI. CAPT Bedard is married to the former Linda K. Deck of Harvey, North Dakota. Their two sons are lason, aged 5, and jordan, 2. i, M , It Sins,

LIEUTENANT KATHERINE j. BROWN, USNR 31C ADVISOR LT Katherine j. Brown, the first woman officer at the Vanderbilt NROTC Unit, is a native of Brooklyn, New York. After obtaining a BA in International Realtions from the University of Arizona and a MAT from Rockford College in Illinois, LT Brown taught in the elementary and secondary public schools of Illinois and Virginia. Desiring to return to her original career plan of government service, she took the advice of a friend and looked into the opportunities offered by the Navy. LT Brown was commissioned from the OCS program in june, 1972 and before coming to Vanderbilt served in several instructional capacities at the Naval Aviation Schools Command in Pensacola. She is married to john M. L. Brown of Marion Kentucky, a l977 graduate of Vanderbilt Law School. They are the parents of Anissa Marie Brown, who was born Ito the especial delight of LT Brown's history classesj on I3 April 1977. FISHER jR USN 4lC ADVISOR LT Fisher is a West Virginia native and proud ofit' Following his enlistment in i966 he served aboard the USS SARATOGA ICVA-6Oj, before coming to Vanderbilt under the NESEP program, where he was graduated cum laude from the Engineering School in 1972 Prior to Vanderbilt he served aboard the USS RICHARD E BYRD IDDG 23j as gun boss, First Lieutenant, and Main Propulsion Assistant His responsibil ities at the Unit, in addition to looking after the freshman class, include coaching the Unit basketball team and sewing as Unit First Lieutenant. He is also engaged in acquiring a Masters Degree in Engineering Management LT Fisher is married to the former Merrilee Elliott and has two children ason john and a daughter, jamie.
