T Captain ermeth . mith 1 I Af 124' i l l 2 ,THQ ff l l . fi The 1977 Galleon is sincerely dedicated to our commanding officer, Captain Kenneth G. Smith, USN. The Unit staff, the battalion, and I want this issue to be a lasting tribute to the man that helped shape the careers of so many young naval officers. As a graduating senior midshipmen, I had the personal pleasure of knowing Captain Smith for his entire three year tour. During that time I have watched the Unit gain a nationawide, if not worldwide, reputation. Merely mention the fact that you are from Vanderbilt while at Corpus or Little Creek and one hears You guys are everywhere. When our teams compete at Auburn, Great Lakes, Ole Miss, Tulane, or Georgia Tech, we are immediately recognized as the defending champions or leading contenders. This is a direct result of the guidance and inspiration the Unit receives from Captain Smith. For example, who is the first to congratulate winning teams and individuals, or offer words of encouragement to the defeated? The Captain. Who is always among the last to leave Unit parties, field meets, sporting events, or beer busts? The Captain. This dedication has truly touched us all in some way. Crowning Navy Queens, cooking hot dogs at picnics, or planning parades and drill schedules may not be as exciting as foul weather flight ops, but Captain Smith has never lacked enthusiasm as Unit CO. He has stated on several occasions that this tour has been one of the highlights of his 25 year career. His wife once told me the Captain said experiencing our energy and unlimited potential is as memorable to him as commanding a squadron. I can only wonder what thoughts will be occupying his mind on April 21st while reviewing the Battalion for the last time as its Commanding Officer. We are about to embark on our Naval careers, and he is ending his. Captain Smith, we in turn say to you as you have said to so many: May you always have fair winds and following seas. Very respectfully, MlDN1!c Ray H. Gray Ill LIEUTENANT COLONEL HENRY L. They can always be heard playing heartwarming renditions of Anchors Aweigh and The Marine Corps Hymn. The band's most important function as far as the midshipmen are concemed is during Fall and Spring Review when music is provided as the batallion passes the reviewing stand. The band has occasional obligations to perform at other times away from the unit. The members performed admirably at the Marine Corps Reserve Birthday Ball at a time when most would rather have been at the Vanderbilt homecoming festivities. Four of the members also performed at another Marine Corps Birthday ceremony. Early one Saturday moming the band showed up at the Marine Corps Reserve Center to provide music for a retirement ceremony. And who can forget the presence of the band at the Army vs. Navy football and basketball games! With only sixteen or so amateur musicians and practices two aftemoons a week, the band has its work cut out. The members add something special to the NROTC Unit that could not be provided by any other group. Time and again, the Americans were beaten back or withdrew. But they did, indeed, rise and fight again. It was precisely this kind of dogged determination that won America its freedom from the Crown in the Revolutionary War. Always short of men, money and supplies, Greene couldn't afford to risk full-scale war against the might of the British. But he could use his tough, highly mobile forces to fragment the British fighting strength at various strong points and cut off their vital supply routes. And this he did. Using startling hit-and-run guerrilla tactics against the rigidly formal brand of British warfare, Greene's strategy paid off. He won the war in the South. Each time the daring General and his men struck and pulled back, obstinately attacked and expeditiously evaded, they so crippled the Redcoats that the treaty of Gctober 19, 1781, was inevitable. Since the birth of our nation, America's military has met challenge after challenge with Herculean heroism. For 55 of those years, it has been our privilege to serve the officers who have served our country so well. Today, nine out of ten active duty officers insure with USAA.
