initiative, self-control, unselfishness, honor, and courage. John A. Lejeune: Reminiscences of a Marine, 1930 l i l l i i i W oooo up I x In addition Major Gardner's collateral duties included Marine Option recruiter, Midshipman Battalion Advisor, Rifle and Pistol Team Advisor, Public Affairs Officer, Drill Team Advisor, and Senior Watch OfficerlSecurity Officer. All of these he has performed in a thoroughly professional manner, characterized by enthusiasm and attention to detail. Of particular interest to him have been those which involve contact with the midshipmen and NESEP Officer Candidates of the Unit. From him the Battalion has learned not only the technical facts of the drill field, military ceremony, and on your feetv leadership, but have seen his example of professional excellence as well. He has untiringly contributed his time and effort to these advisory tasks attending night and weekend meetings and practice sessions, coaching and counseling individuals, accompanying groups to competitions, and in every detail backing the students to assure that they realize the benefit ofsuccessful effort. Major Gardner is an impressive professional officer. He is competent and experienced as an infantry officer, thoroughly dedicated to his country and the task at hand, outgoing and at ease with seniors and subordinates, and sincerely interested in the welfare of those around him. He is active in athletics and physically fit. From the standpoint of the whole man concept he is exceptional in every respect and must be considered one of the outstanding leaders in the Naval Service. The midshipmen of the Vanderbilt NROTC Battalion are grateful for the privilege of knowing Major Gardner. We will miss him. The young American responds quickly and readily to the exhibition of qualities of leadership on the part of his officers. Some of these qualities are industry, energy, initiative, determination, enthusiasm, firmness, kindness,
