In recent years, a number of students have come to expect a yearbook to be more than the traditional album filled with pictures which are meant to re- flect all that happened during the previous year. Few of them, however, share the same expecta- tions. Some of them expect it to remind them- to tell them-how they felt, what they thought about everything that had occurred. Others expect it to evaluate and assess the year in retrospect to tell them what was really significant. Students also have conflicting ideas about the way and to what extent a yearbook should cover specific events. Some believe that an annual should scrutinize every minute detail under the harsh, unyielding light of reality. Others believe that, while it should reflect reality, it should emphasize the pleasant hap- penings and minimize the unpleasant. A few feel that it should present the entire year in an arti- ficial rosy-glow. We did not set out to fulfill everyone's expecta- tions, for we believe that such a task would prove to be impossible to accomplish as well as absurd. The 1967 COMMODORE represents, rather, our conscientious efforts to produce what we hope is a yearbook that satisfies most Vanderbilt students and that captures, for its readers, the people, the moods, the activities, the events that were, in es- sence, Vanderbilt in 1966-1967. We have attempted to compile a record that will endure the test of time. For, many years from now we may be struck by the realization that we can no longer recollect all of those unforgetable college experiences we had once believed could never fade. If students, when they want to remember the years spent at Vanderbilt, can refresh their memories by glancing through the 1967 ,COMMODORE, it will have achieved an important objective. ' We have not tried to recall every specific incident of the year. Certain ones undoubtedly warrant more comment than we care to make. We have merely eluded to a few of them. Some will probably be remembered whether we are reminded of them or not, as for the others, if we do forget them, per- haps Vanderbilt will be better remembered with- out them. So, here is your 1967 COMMODORE. If we have managed to satisfy some of you, we will have suc- ceeded in our efforts. To those of you who do not like what we have produced, we offer our con- dolences.
