Art Guepe, who came here from Virginia in 1953, coached the Commodores for the last time this year. His brother, Al, was backlield coach, Billy Hickman coached the defensive backs. Other Vanderbilt coaches were Mel Sinquefield, Frank Thorsey, Dick Richardson, and Larry Harding. ln Freshman dorms brightened the overcast on what was known ln the Commodore Room as Blue Saturday. At times the football game turned into a Dudley Field spectacle. 'Outwardly this year spirit was at its highest ebb. Inwardly something was lacking, not only in the stands, but on the field as well. One can go so far in helping another, from then on it is up to the individual to carry the ball. Carrying the ball was a rarity this year both on the field and in the stands, 1962 will be remembered as the year the squad made the big fumbles, but it should also be remembered as the year the administration started on the road to holding onto the ball a little more. Coach Guepe commented to the Memphis Commercial Appeal that something needed to be done about football at Vanderbilt. Well, Kirkland started carrying the ball instead of passing it and fumbling it this year, after one of their better ball carriers bowed out of action, They have a new quarterback now, and a new baclcfield running the show. Perhaps we will return to the road of win- ning tradition.
