re your burning idealists really fight for what believe, but the thorns of life are sharp Lgh. E , things are not necessarily serious. There are ess parades of combo parties, then we have cuts, and fraternity rush remains a matter of or death, the elite are recognized by dark es in the springtime. However, when our new icellor remarlced, Whether or not we shall be to master our environment, including our -made environment, will be the ultimate test of success or failure of the American university m, he was dead right. The function of a rsity is threefold: to educate leaders for cy, to stimulate creative individuals, and to as a center for research and scholarship. All 1 are staggeringly vital, so we must take some hat happens here quite seriously after all. we have Vanderbilt University, and you, make the University, floating, ah yes, upon uri of time, growing, changing, dying- ge Santayana's foam in the rolling tempest, then the fall of the wave, running back to a, but leaving little puddles, here and there, mark its path. We have quoted from some s who at one time or another were parts of erbiltg perhaps they are voices of the past. of them, the Fugitives, are reputed to be onaries, and if such, they are one side of the les we witness, but as symbols, they are uous, for they also represent the virile crea- toward which we strive today. this university is obligated to explore the rims of knowledge that man may better stand himself and his environment. Change accompany the eternal exploration, and strife ccompany change. Where the change is al, the strife will be subtle, but it Hates up, nd then, when there are sit-in demonstrations, en Vanderbilt independents run for oflice. though we are sad to see the old order die: ERE THE ASI-IES... WHIRL AT A CHIMNEY-BREATH ON TI-IE COLD STONE there will be new fires tomorrow, and they shall burn brightly, as all fires have burned.

ENNETT HARVIE BRANSCOMB of year 1962 63, the last year of his presence as Chancellor here but, happily, not the last of his influence. For no year will see the last of that. We didn't know him very well. But, observing occa- sionally and at a distance his rather rough-grained eminence, we imagine an uncommon blending of Will Rogers, foreloclc with Oxford optimacy, of Hemingwayesque war experience with a firm and published knowledge of Christian theology. So he must be: not quite rugged and not quite polished, and upon his shoulders the dignity of a Chancellorship has rested readily and easily for sixteen and a half years. In the strength of his progressive beneficence, the artful mastership of a financier, Vanderbilt has felt its boundaries stretched toward international limits, its prejudices softened, its adequacy confronted and accused. Even now, another patch of shaded lawn and wandering brick paths is being scooped out in the name of excellence. He neglected some things, it is true. But the reverence inspired by his very detachment and the evidence of his unceasing concern revealed by what has been done here com- bine to disclose a worthy, a lofty and immensely brilliant man-a very stately Chancellor. We thanlc him and wish him well. g Will' eil-Ellll
