THE STUDE T U IO OFFICERS FRANK C. VVILSON, JR. ....,...... ...... P resident CHARLES GILL .....,. ..... . ..l7it't'-President COL. GEORGE P. VVINTON ....................... Secretary The Vanderbilt Vnion is an organization in which every Vanderbilt student, professional and academic, is a member. Membership is established on registering. A non-transferable identification card is issued entitling the holder to participate in all of the activities of the Union throughout the year. Rep- resentatives from the various schools and classes are elected each year to serve on the Student l'nion Board, which is the executive part of the Union. This group plans and promotes a program of social entertainment as lectures, concerts, dances, and movies. The membership fee of five dollars, which is collected annually during matriculation by the Bursar, is apportioned to the Student Ifnion Board for student activities and to the Administration Committee of the Alumni Association for the maintenance of Alumni Hall. In the spring of 1949, the students voted to have all of the school dances fall under the supervision of the Student Union. As a result, the Student I'nion this year has sponsored the popular gym dances together with the junior and Senior Proms. Public Opinion agreed that the gym dances were some of the best Vanderbilt has seen, and the Student Union still maintains its policy of not charging for these dances. The Union also brought Abbey Simon, renowned concert pianist to the Vanderbilt campus. In addition to these services, the Stu- dent Ilnion sponsored a program of eight movies, and outstand- ing picture being shown each Friday night during the winter quarter. Considering this to be the first year for these movies, they were enthusiastically received. There was a sell out for the first show, and additional tickets had to be printed and sold for a second showing. These movies will probably be continued in the future. The facilities of Alumni Hall were used by stu- dent publicalion organizations, the choir, the SCA, and other student activities.
