THE CHANCELLOR This volume expresses, I believe, the spirit of the Vanderbilt campus better than any other publication. It records your activities, competitive and otherwise, your range of interests, your sense of humor, and your pride in the University. Let me add my congratulations and best wishes. You have had, I am sure, a happy time during your years on the campus. But just as no one has a right to consume wealth without in turn producing it, so no one has a right to consume happiness without creating it. The University be- lieves this. Your course here has thus had a double purpose. First of all is your own personal enrichment. To that is added the intent that these personal qualities may be used in the service of others. We do not think much of people who talk about but have never disciplined and prepared themselves to give anything worth having. Nor do we think much of those who regard life simply as their personal merry-go-round. We hope that you have discovered this double truth during your years here. Ulf you have, your alma mater will be proud of you whether or not your name appears in headlines or bright lights. Yours sincerely, HARVIE BRANSCOMB CTIIANC'lil.l.OR IIARVIIC BRANSCOMB
