THE JOINT UNIVERSITY LIBRARY The JoinT UniversiTy Libraries oT Nashville, Tennessee, represenT a new movemenT in higher educaTion..They were esTabilshed To eliminaTe unnecessary dupIicaTion and To coordinaTe The resources oT Three insTiTuTions oT higher learning: George Peabody College Tor Teachers, ScarriTT College, and VanderbilT UniversiTy. AT The cenTer oT This deveIopmenT a new and endowed JoinT UniversiTy Library has been provided. The building and iTs endowmenT is ioinTIy owned and direcTed. One Board oT TrusTees conTrols all book resources and adminisTers all library serv- ices. ln like manner There is one FaculTy CommiTTee, one DirecTor, and one Treasurer. The plan Tor such a cooperaTive universiTy cenTer, supporTed by an adequaTe library, in Nashville, was The direcT ouTgrowTh oT a comprehensive survey made in I935-36, The enTerprise was designed as The nexT sTep Toward a greaT regional universiTy cenTer in Nashville. To make iT possible, The General EducaTion Board and The Carnegie CorporaTion gave subsTanTial sums oT money, and more Than Tive Thousand sTudenTs, TaculTy members, alumni, employees, and Triends oT These schools conTribuTed generously. , The acuTeness of library needs had been TelT Tor some Time. The chief adminisTraTive oTTicers of Peabody, ScarriTT, and Van- derbilT realized ThaT Their insTiTuTions, separaTely, could noT build up adequaTe resources. On The Vanderbill' campus, Tor exam- ple, in addiTion To The liberal arTs school, There were The proTessional schools in engineering, law, medicine, nursing, and religion. VanderbiIT, moreover, had had Two devasTaTing library Tires. The academic col- lecTion ToTaling 23,934 volumes, was reduced in I905 To 5,346 volumes, many oT which were pracTically ruined by Tire, waTer, and exposure following. In I932, The School of Religion Library oT over I6,000 volumes was damaged almosi beyond resToraTion by Tire. Since This cooperaTive eTTorT was sTarTed in I936, a Union CaTalog of all Nashville libraries has been compleTed: a Library oT Congress CaTalog has been acquired: and basic book resources have been increased from 285,000 To 400,000 volumes. The urgenT necessiTy ol: having regional universiTy cenTers oT TirsT rank in The SouTh, one in Nashville, is now Tully recognized. Such cenTers are needed To develop The greaT human and naTuraI resources ThaT abound here: To Train The leadership requisiTe Tor The soluTion oT complex regional problems: and To keep promising young men and women Trom migraTing To oTher secTions Tor edu- caTionaI, proTessionaI, and economic opporTuniTies, To The greaT loss oT The SouTh, DIRECTOR A. A summer session has been added which is open fo all sfudenfs. A freshman who affends fhree sum- mer sessions may graduafe in Three years insfead of four. For fhis purpose fhere has been a modifica- fion of fhe comprehensive courses and comprehen- sive examinafions. Courses are offered in all of fhe deparfmenfs during fhe summer session.. The admission reguiremenfs have been revised fo permif fhe enrollmenf of falenfed high school grad- uafes who ofherwise would nof meef all of fhe lan- guage and mafhemafics reguiremenfs. This will en- able fhese sfudenfs fo gef fhe fundamenfal fraining necessary for milifary and fechnical branches of governmenf service. The program of fhe freshman year has been made more flexible fo permif greafer specializafion. ln order fo develop especially fal- enfed high school graduafes for fhe nafion's war efforf, Vanderbilf is offering fiffeen prize scholar- ships for fhe academic year I942-43 fo incoming freshmen.
