Pomtret came to Vanderbilt University in the fall of l937 to fill the administra- tive office of Dean of the Senior College and Graduate School. ln preparation for the duties which he so capably performs here, Dr. Pomfret attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he graduated in l9l7 and later received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Having served on the faculties of Princeton University and the University of South Carolina, he is well known in the educational world. He has achieved distinction in the field of research, particularly of Ireland, in recognition of rhich he was awarded the Tialteann prize by the lrish Free State. Just prior to coming to Vanderbilt, he served as Secretary of the Social Science Council of New York. During the past two years he has spent two months in a study of American col- leges, on a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. Dean Pomfret's wide experience in dealing with young people, his understanding of their problems, and the personal interest he main- tains in his students are his invaluable contributions to the Senior College and the Graduate School. 1
