Many have confribufed fo fhe building of fhis insfifufion, buf if may be claimed, wifhouf fear of confradicfion, fhaf he made fhe greafesf con- fribufion fo ifs progress. Bishop McTyeire and Chancellor Garland launched fhe Universify upon ifs career, and ofhers have confribufed large funds for ifs expansiong buf Dr. Kirkland invesfed a long life. His infellecf, his courage, his pafience, his self-sacrifice, his faifh, wroughf mighfily in ifs behalf. Ofhers have spoken of his large place in fhe educafional hisfory of fhe Soufh and of fhe nafion. His influence and his fame are well esfablished fhroughouf fhe counfry. The COMMODORE would emphasize his relafion, over a long period of fime, fo fhe sfudenfs of Vanderbilf. For seven years as Professor of Lafin he helped prepare some of fhe leading classical scholars Of America, and inspired ofhers wifh fhe fhoroughness of his scholarship and fhe loffiness of his ideals. During all fhe earlier years of his adminisfrafion he performed many of fhe dufies of a dean of sfudenfs. His chapel falks and more formal addresses were a feafure of every academic year. Somefimes his voice was like fhaf of a prophef as he inferprefed some Universify or nafional crisis. Such a man's lasf words 'are always significanf. No one will ever forgef his address fo fhe alumni when he refired in I937. Af fhe lasf meefing of fhe Board of Trusf, in supporf of Chancellor Car- michael's recommendafion of a campaign for larger funds, he said: ln faking now a posifive sfand, we say fhaf we infend fo live now in fhe lighf of a larger cause, in fhe lighf of a Universify develop- menf fhaf covers fhe nexf fen years. We are announcing a plan and program for fhaf greafer insfi- fufion fhaf is in our hearfs, and fo which we have all been confribufing our lives.
