o r e w o r d cherish the things that are essentially Vanderbilt, to add one more page to this mosaic of life, to enrich and preserve the experien- ces of youth—to these the following pages are dedicated with the sincere hope that, as the years pass, this, the Commodore, may always preserve the thoughts of those days that were so gloriously ours. The friendships, the inspirations of true cultural at- tainment, the happy days, the gayety, the colorful heritage of youth, these are too infinitely precious to be lost— lest they be irretrievably lost as in some ancient, musty ledger, we pre- sent this book.
