University expects to make a distinct contribution to medical history and discovery as well as to medical teaching through this great enterprise. - Vanderbilt's development has also been notable in the line of student activities out- side the classroom. Chief attainments have been, of course, in the varied fields of college athletics, football, basketball, baseball, and track. A long story might be told of Vanderbilt's achievements in football, of victorious teams, of defeated rivals, of emi- nent coaches, and of loyal alumni who have given much of their time and thought to this interest. The name of Dr. W. L. Dudley, professor of chemistry for so long a time, will always be remembered as the chief promoter of athletics at Vanderbilt, and also throughout the South. The present director of athletics, Dan E. McGugin, has been connected with Vanderbilt for more than twenty-five years, and is known through- out the country as one of the foremost football coaches. The development of the Alumni Association has also been most noteworthy. The alumni ofiice, first efficiently organized by Mr. Charles Cason and later developed by Nlr. Max Souby and Mr. L. B. Smelser, has organized the alumni in helpful work for the University. One of the achievements of alumni spirit may be seen in the erection of Alumni Memorial Hall. No sketch of the history of Vanderbilt University could be complete without some reference to the great outstanding figures influential in the early years of University history. The founder of Vanderbilt University will always be recognized as Com- modore Vanderbilt, but equally important and standing with him was Bishop lVIc- Tyeire, a great leader in the Southern Methodist Church, and the great organizer in the history of Vanderbilt University. He may well be held responsible and given credit I2 a.. 7 ge' f i -Q-mmwwmmmwmnwmxi swarms i 5sQumNxN swxmxm Wm' is M. tems

In this capacity he assumed the lead in the work of securing the campus and in planning the buildings. Another figure even more cherished in the memory of early students was that of Dr. Garland, the first chancellor. Dr. Garland gave his time to the internal work of the institution, particularly in the College of Arts and Science. He served also in the capacities of a dean and professor of physics. His contact with students was close, and his influence over their lives potent and abiding. Other names might also be mentioned in the history of each professional school, but no names will ever stand out in the earlier history of Vanderbilt University like those of the three great leaders who gave it shape and made possible its existence-Commodore Vanderbilt, Bishop H. N. lVIcTyeire, and Dr. Landon C. Garland. VANDERBILT BASEBALL TEAM, 1888 Standing: Clement, XVynn, Kellar, Finn, Bryson Below: Taylor, Millington, Burch, Hume. One other there is Whose name will be imperishable on the roll of those who have made Vanderbilt a life service, and to him is this COMMODORE dedicated. He came to the University in 1886, a young man, as professor of Latin. Seven years later he was made chancellor and began a service, which has now lasted thirty-two years, add- ing nearly 312,000,000 to the assets of the University largely through his own efforts and direction, adding immeasurably to the prestige of the name of Vanderbilt Univer- sity through the high and constantly raised scholastic standards which he advocated and put into practice often far in advance of other universities. He had to start with an institution which a mere conserver might Well have simply kept intact. He had obstacles to overcome which none but a man of energy, Wisdom, and persuasion could have converted into assets. The semi-centennial of Vanderbilt University is also a tribute to the work of Chancellor -Tames Hampton Kirkland. It will be said of him that with repeated success he opposed foresight to stupidity and tolerance to passiong but the measure of his stature will be found in his dedication of self to the cause of education.
