It ..,. . . .,.. .:1..,,.,- .... .. . 1 . 1 Vanderbilt University morning. The campus became, in fact, an army camp, with all that means of destruction to university life. Three companies were formed on the West Campus and one on the South, and these companies formed the only units made during the period of the existence of the S. A. T. C. Fraternity pins retreated under the pocket flaps of khaki uniforms, and October passed without the customary fratemity rush and spiking. Clubs shared a like fate. The only organization or publication able to continue during this period was the Hustler. V October and the early part of November were spent in acclimating the strange new visitor to Vanderbilt soil. They were weeks of dis- appointment and dissatisfaction, but they were marked by an effort on the part of students, university officials and the War Department lo make the best of the situation. In November came the glad news that the armistics was signed and the days of the S. A. T. C. numbered. From then until December was a time 019 hopeful waiting. On December the tenth two companies were honorably discharged from the army, and on the following day the other two received their freedom. By January the first and the opening of the new term the S. A. T. C. had become a matter of history. Its presence on the campus had meant the complete derangement of all college schedules. The difficulty of combining the freedom of college life with the discipline of military life was abundantly illustrated in this attempt. But it is worth while to have made it. It was one phase-and by no means the smallest- of Vanderbiltfs war work. it is thoroughly in accord with the spirit of Vanderbilt that she should have done her part wherever the opportunity offered, on the campus, as well as on the Marne.

f 2 7 1 t 1 nge student Army i i i G HE vicissitudes of war have been many, and Vanderbilfs part in it has been by no means confined to the deeds of her sons on the battle fields. She has known service, it is true, in the work of faculty and students, in depleted ranks at home and full J classes in Franceg but no act of patriotism surpasses that of the fall of l9lS, when she threw her doors open to a unit of alta QQQQQ the Student Army Training Corps. The Vanderbilt unit was only one of many such organizations established by the government in all the big colleges and universities of the United States. . i Its purpose was to combine college and military training for boys in the new draft between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one who were expected to be called into the regular army by June. It was thought that by utilizing the resources of the colleges the government could conserve much needed funds and the colleges be supplied with students who would otherwise be put in army training camps. ln accordance with this plan, on October the hrst, in Vanderbilt chapel, nearly tive hundred men took the oath of allegiance to the United States of America, and became a part of the United States Army. It was an impressive sight, and one not soon to be liorgoten in Vanderbilt annals. From this time on Vanderbilt was no longer the home of academic calm and university tradition. Kissam and Wesley Halls were made into army barracks: a canteen was openedg the gymnasium was turned into a Y roomy the sound of men drilling broke the stillness of the early
