The Glory of Vanderbilt ANDLRBILI is justly proud of the example set by her faculty, her alumni, and her students in this hour of world crisis. I rue to the traditions and spirit of Vanderbilt, of American universities all over the country, conscious of the fact that America was looking to college-bred men for leadership and guidance, aware of the fact that their actions would serve as an example for thousands of others, hundreds of Vanderbilt men flocked to the colors at the first call to arms, and they have continued to answer the call, till over a thousand are now in khaki, either already Somewhere in F rance or else in training camps here, awaiting their opiwrtunitv to go to the front. And among these are not only the older men. the alumni and graduates, but many, very many, of the undergraduate classes. We have only to look around us for their absent faces to realize how many! I oo much honor cannot bo paid these men by their Alma Mater. Gladly and willingly have they offered their lives to the service of the country, not blindly, not in a spirit of rash adventure, but in a spirit of self-sacrificing devotion to the principles for which the country stands. Not simply because they are Americans and propose to follow the President, but because they believe the F resident is right, because they believe this is an unselfish war on America's part, that this is one of the hours for which America was liorn, an hour to serve humanity: it is in this spirit that these young heroes of ours have gone. In the comfort and ease of home, hi the carefree, joyous days of youth, surrounded bv family and friends, they have been touched by the spirit of the country, the great spirit of service, and have gone forth. The Battalion of Death, to sacrifice their lives, if need be. for the principles for which they stand. I hey are truly worthy of our loving pride and admiration. Hut it is not only Battalions of Death that Vanderbilt has sent forth. In the Vanderbilt Hospital Unit there went out a company, composed not only of men. both young and old. but also of a group of noble and patriotic women. I his company went forth, not on an errand of death, but of life. I hey went to lighten, as far as is humanly possible. the terrible horrors and suffering of war. They went to ease the pain of the wounded, they went to mend the torn and broken bodies of those who had given their all m the strife, they went to bring back to life and health those who would otherwise have perished, they went to make death easier. I hey went forth as a Battalion of Life. And in this unit Vanderbilt has given many of the best of her Medical I’aculty. She has ent forth no professional failures, no professional derelicts. Only the best could qualify. .She has sent to I ranee physicians and surgeons and nurses who will match in skill and courage the best of their professions. Truly, when we call the roll of this company, we can ray: We sent out a hospital unit in which you will find the very flower of the manhood and wonrnhood of Vanderbilt.
