O0MMODO,B jlifj The Chancellor R. JAMES H. KIRKLAND has beei Chancellor of Vanderbilt University since June 20. IS93. He has kept the University n its onward and upward course until it has become one of the great universities of the land, and by far the greatest institution of learning in the South. Under his administration, every department of Vanderbilt University has been made to conform to national standard; of education: the entrance requirements in the Aca- demic Department are now based on the Carnegie unit system: the Law Department has now a three year course, and is a member of the American Association of Law Schools: the Medical and Dental Depart- ments ha e conformed to the Carnegie requirements: and the Biblical Department has quadrupled in atten- dance and influence. Chancellor Kirkland has shown conclusively tha he is a man of sound learning and high Christian character, suitable for a model to the young men who come under his influence: a man capable of shaping the policies of a great university, ol discerning its multiform interests, and of guiding safely the destiny ol the institution which has been intrusted to him. Chir.cellor Kirkland has turned the streams of wealth and influence into the University’s service, and has made Vanderbilt University what its generous founder.' and friends intended it to be. a conservator of true learning and noble character.
