Dr. William f alooe Bashervill , is with some misgivings that the writer has undertaken to crowd into the short space of vs» two pages, what proposes to he even the briefest account of the life of the subject of this sketch. His work was of such a varied character, and his influence so far reaching, that it would require a much longer paper in order to duly set forth his virtues and achievements. I r. William Malone Baskervill. to whose cherished memory the Comkt of 1900 is dedi- cated. was born in Fayette County. West Tennessee, in 1S50. He was of a prominent Virginia family—his father, a Methodist minister, being a native of that State. He attended school at home almost constantly until his fifteenth year, when he entered De l'auw University, at Green castle. Ind. After spending only a few months here, he returned home and pursued his studies with much satisfaction fora period of about three years, under Mr. Ouales, of the University of Virginia. Soon after this, his college career was liegun at Randolph Macon Virginia). It was at this time that hi» enthusiasm was especially aroused along those lines in which most of his work was to be done. Under the influence of several of the leading educators of the South, who were then at Randolph-Macon, an anient love for the study of the languages grew upon him. particu- larly of Latin. Greek, English. French, and German. In 1876 he went to l.eipsig to pursue his studies iu these schools, where he received his Doctor's degree, on returning several years later. Towards the close of «876 he was elected to a professorship in Wofford College, where lie was thrown with Drs. Kirkland and Smith, with whom he was to be so closely associated in later years. He held this place at Wofford College until 1881, when he was called to the then recently established Chair of English, at Vanderbilt University. This chair he held at the time of his death. September 6. 1899. Dr. Baskervill's life was a busy one. During his connection with Vanderbilt University he was actively engaged in almost every phase of literary work.
