work in behalf of the Preparatory School System of Tennessee and the South in general. Aside from his regular work, he was a frequent contributor to Nashville papers, especially to tlu Christian Advocate, lie spent many of his summers lecturing in the North and West, his last illness preventing him from filling an engagement of this kind at Lake Chautauqua, in New York. His relation to the new school of Southern writers was unique, and his labors in this field have been very fruitful. In his Southern Writers Series—only six papers of which he lived to finish—he has accomplished a work for Southern literature the value of which would be difficult to estimate. Being a contemporary of this school of writers, and having closely studied the rise and development of the movement, he was peculiarly fitted to be an interpreter of it. It is with pleasure that we learn that these unfinished papers will be completed by some of his old pupils, and the series be published in its entirety. But we. as students of Vanderbilt University, are peculiarly concerned with his relation- ship to our own institution, and with his personal influence on those who came in contact with him. Since 1881 his efforts in behalf of the School of English have been untiring. It is not too much to say that lie has made the department. To his work, most of all. do we owe the fact that Vanderbilt can offer the best graduate English course in the South. It was always his desire to instill into his pupils a love for their own Southern literature, and with this in view, the study of the late Southern writers was emphasized. I)r. Baskervill's personal relations with the students were of the happiest character. He soon learned to know each one with whom lie was thrown his strong points and his weak ones and hence was able to judiciously guide him in his work. Ilis loyalty to his men was a marked characteristic. Their interests were kept constantly at heart, and he was always ready to work for them and assist them. To estimate his loss to the University would be impossible Though his place may be filled by worthy successors, and our School of English continue to grow and broaden, yet his name will always be first, and his work most prominent in the history of the development of the department.
