QHAPING A POLISHED In 1870 organized Catholic Education was brought to Houma, by the Marianite Sisters of Holy Cross. The name of this first school was Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, but in 1879 the name was changed to St. Francis de Sales Academy. Boys were enrolled in this school in 1890, and by 1918 the school facilities had become inadequate. In this year the boys were transferred to a building near the Church. fhe completion of St. Francis High School for girls in 1950 was another important step in the progress of Catholic Education in Houma. In 1952 the Brother of the Sacred Heart took charge of the boys' division of the school. For fifteen years the Brothers used the century-old Academy of Point Street. Even though facilities were poor at the Boys, school, St. Francis became well known for the excellence of education it gave its students. Honors, both scholastic and athletic have brought St. Francis the proud title of 'School of Champions. 'In 1965 another school was opened. This school accommodated both girls and boys. Now the tradition of Catholic education can he housed in a fitting ultra-modern building under the name of VANDEBILT CATHOLIC HIGH.
