BASEBALL The Vandalia Vandals' baseball team ended the 1947 baseball season with a record unsurpassed by any other V.C'.H.S. team. Superior fielding, Thomas' fine pitching, and Iim Staff's home run in the final game at Greenville cinched an undefeated season for the Vandals. There were several exceptional individual records compiled during the season. Among these were Thomas' allowing the opposition only 18 hits and striking out 58 batters during the 42 innings he pitched. The fact that seven individuals completed the season with a batting average of over .300 is also an outstanding record. lndividual batting averages were as follows: B. TRACK The Vandalia boys tallied thirty-two points to take second place in the county track meet held at Brownstown this year. Some outstanding boys at the meet were Bill Staff, first in the one-hundred yard dash and two-hundred twenty yard dash, and Paul Thomas, first in the shot-put. At the track meet With St. Elmo Norman Bass broke the Vandalia High School record for the shot-put With a heave of forty-three feet eight and a half inches, thus bettering the old record by one foot and nine inches. Vandalia's strong arm team had four boysYNorman Bass, Paul Davidson, Bill Harner, and Paul Thomas-who could throw the shot over forty-one feet, which is a school record. Other outstanding performers of this year's track team Were the Staff brothers, lim and Bill, in the hurdles, Eddie Chappelear and Bob Blunt in the half mile run, Paul Davidson in the broad jump, Benton Kains and Bill Harner in the quarter mile, and Laverne Crawford and Paul Thomas in the high jump. The cross-country team had many nights of rugged training under the watchful eye of Coach Drenckpohl before they met Browristown on the cross- country course at the Vandalia City Park. The Vandalia team won the honors of the meet by outscoring Brownstown. The District meet this year was held at Tri-Cityg the participants for Van- dalia were Eugene Huber, Norman Hagy, Russell Murphy, Dick Lawler, and Bonnie Dale. Standing: L. Crawford, B. Chandler. .fx s. s. gg The National Athletic Scholastic Society is composed of high school boys throughout the nation who have earned a letter in some var- sity sport and who have kept above average grades for three straight semesters. Because of their evident quali- ties of good sportsmanship the following boys were granted mem- bership previous to this year in the N,A.S.S.: lim Staff, Bill Hafner, Bob Chandler, and Paul Thomas. Newcomers ol the organization are Edward Chappelear, Lavern Crawford, Benton Kains, Bob Duff, and Dale l-lamby. The Vandalia Chapter of this society was begun in 1934. y 6422
