Ewart, Coach Drenckpohl, lst Row: B. Staff, B. Chandler, I. Staff, B. Harner, D. Hamby, P. Thomas. With the return of six veteran lettermen Coach Vernon Drenckpohl, aided by assistant Coach Mills, molded together an outfit that fought hard during a Wearing thirty-one game schedule, to wind up With a record of twenty-one Wins and ten losses. A week before regional tournament time the Vandals lost a sharp- shooting cager-Paul Thomas. On February 29 he celebrated his fifth birthday-yet Paul was too old for basketball. Our coaches have done a very fine job this year. Coach Mills has been very efficient in coaching the B team and in assisting Coach Drenckpohl with the main team. A great deal of credit should be given to Coach Drenckpohl and the entire basketball team for the fine display of sportsman- ship and the honor that they brought to V. C. H. S. Due to the coach's super- vision our boys won two trophies for our school--one for third place at the Centralia Tournament, and the other from the St. Elmo Regional Tournament. Q37 P7

Basketball at V.C.H.c. As we look back upon the basketball season of 1947-48, we see our Vandals waging one of their most successful campaigns in recent years. Among their twentyfone victories out of a total of thirty-one games were wins over such fore midable teams as Clinton, Harrisburg, Free' port, and Springfield. ln addition to these suc cesses the Vandals finished second in the Mid- State Conference, and captured third place laurels in the Centralia Holiday Tourney. A major factor in the Vandal wins was the magnificent support provided by the local cage fans who journeyed over the highways in all weather conditions to see the boys put up a stiff fight against all competition. Leading the crowd in their cheering were four of the best cheerleaders that we have witnessed in action --A-Anna Lou Spinner, foyce Pumiiiill, lane Stomn baugh, and Billye Brooks. After the Vandals had captured the regional crown at St. Elmo by defeating a surprised Altamont five in the title game by the score of 4322, they were assigned to the Hillsboro sectional where they were pitted against a strong Pana team. Although the Vandals held the lead until the final minute of the first half, they cooled off on their shooting in the last part of the game and were defeated by the score of 5088. Ori March 22, following the conclusion of the basketball season, the basketball teaiii and the cheerleaders were honored at the yearly banquet sponsored by the Rotary and Lions clubs. At this time the free throw trophy was awarded to both lim and Bill Staff because their free throw percentages were the same, 44 39:9
