BAD Under the able direction of Oren A. Gould the Vandalia Youth Band has improved the quality of its playing and increased the interest of the student members in their organization. Twelve new members have been added this year, and the instrumentation has been im- proved by the addition of trombones, flutes, kettle drums, and an oboe. Student interest has been further improved by encouraging band members to conduct and give private lessons. Eleven of these people have conducted the band at basketball games this year, and five student teachersvBenton Kains, Mary Lester, Devea Strickland, and Dar- lene Fink-have given an average of five private lessons a week to grade school pupils. The activities participated in by the band are many and varied. General activities include appearing in Concerts for local community 44 24 z events in the fall, marching in revue at the basketball game with Hillsboro, at the Home- coming parade, and at a military funeralp and playing for numerous home basketball games. Special activities entered into were the South Central lllinois Band Festival at St. Elmo, at- tended by twelve membersg the State Music Contest participated in by the full band, eleven soloists, and four ensemblesg and the Spring Festival in which the grade school and high school bands performed en masse and separ- ately under the inspiring leadership of Paul Yoder. The band repertoire includes such numbers as lf Thou Be Near, a Chorale, by I. S. Bach, March Heroic, by Holmes, First Movement of Schubert's Unfinished Symphony , and Iames R. Gillette's new overture, Fable
